    Dougbot:
concept: The Sundtabarry of planet Barlowenia using pings to hunt at night. It hunts along the shores of the bogs and lakes that it can be found in. It leaps at its prey, pushing it to the ground with its massive front 'paws'. Then stabs its prey with its head. Then it absorbs the meat at blood through small holes and pores on its head, and a gill like structure under its neck. Then it returns to the water during the day, floating about digesting its food. Two theories on the red head, one is that it has evolved this way due to jamming it into its prey. Another is that it's meant to blend in with the red algae found on most bogs and lakes.

    hallo:
concept: Stingrats are completely blind. As they've got no eyes, they rely on their excellent sense of hearing to hunt down prey - birds and small mammals.
When a target has been located, the Stingrat sprints towards it at high speed, piercing the unsuspecting victim with the two long horns situated on the frontside of its head.

    young_paddy1:
concept: The forest dwelling 'night angler' feeds off the nocturnal animals attracted by its bioluminescent lure at the end of its tail. Can be found in trees, dangling it's tail below itself waiting for a meal. The multiple eyes give all round as well as full spectrum vision. The lure can fully regrow in a week, because there's always something that's just too quick.

    simmi:
    concept: The Svenacidus
It lives in the forests of the planet G'rogh. When night comes, it awakes in its nest and goes hunting. It seduces sleeping creatures using a strong pheromone wich is produced in the chemical sack. When the prey is in position, the Svenacidus grabs it by using tentacles with spikes. It then "melts" the creature with a strong acid substance produced in the chemical sack for easy eating and digestion. The Svenacidus has special see through eyelids. It can see in the dark and detect body heat. The Svenacidus is suspected of telepathy.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    leckronium:
    concept: North Eastern Cliff Glider
This creature lives in the mountains of the North Eastern United States. Often mistaken for coyotes, the cliff glider hunts during the night feeding mostly on small animals. For those that live near the mountains, they can occasionally be seen gliding through the air and landing on their prey, catching them by surprise. Once it lands, it surrounds the animal by blocking all directions, except the front, with the weblike skin that stretches from the front leg to the back. Seeing an opening, the prey then tries to escape only to be stopped by the glider's powerful snake-like jaw.
After the kill is made the glider then returns to its nesting area usually high up in the mountains. The glider may make several glides down the mountain in a night depending on how many mouths it needs to feed. Usually they are hard to spot since these glides only last a minute or less. They dont make any vocal noises and can find their prey in the darkest of nights. Their large sensitive ears can hear the slightest sounds and they use their snake-like tongues to smell the air. Some have been known to grow up to 4ft tall.

    concept: Smudler
Deep in the swamplands of the Mississippi bayou lives a creature known as the Smudler. This creature is a feared nocturnal predator by all the native species, humans included. With a poisonous pinch, razor sharp teeth enhanced sense of smell, and a tail light used as bait, the Smudler can kill a species 100 times its size. The Smudler is best known for having the sweetest tasting meat and if you're every in Mississippi stop at Mama Voodoo's restaurant and have the Smudler pie... delicious.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Oregano:
    concept: Mantaman Moth Eater
The Mantaman Moth Eater is found near wetlands in deciduous and conifer forests of northern Europe and the Americas. Useful in demolishing common garden and household pests such as aphids, mosquitoes and almost all species of moth, these strangely disturbing creatures are often under appreciated. Adult Manatmen are almost twelve feet in length, greenish brown in color, with large pale eyes. Their bodies are soft, yet not delicate, with a heavier epidermis on their under-belly for grasping tree trunks and branches. Also of note are the bi-lateral abdominal spikes which they use to gain extra footing on bark.
Mantamen are attracted to where-ever their prey is to be found. Often attracted to light sources like their choice foods, moths, Mantamen have been known to terrify rural areas. However the fear is unfounded. They are completely harmless, and can actually be kepted near-by with a nightly dish of dandelion tea. While feral, they are about as intelligent as a cat, though they do not like to be touched and hate tuna.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Carnifex:
    concept: The Arbbaeto
This shy creature goes to hunt small lizards or mammals up to the size of sheep-dogs, but as its eyes are very vulnerable to intense lightning,it will only hunt at night. During daytime it tries to look like a dead tree by perching on a neutral spot, whilst it closes its eyes and puts his hands to his head. The small tail helps to keep the balance. In this stage it will not move and cannot be awakened by anything. Its natural habitat are dense forests, but due to being mistaken for a real tree it has been brought to many cities already. So should your dog or cat been missing longer than normally you may know what has happened.

    MIKECORRIERO:
    concept: Nocta Brimstone
Description/Facts: These descendants of Vampires have been living in swamp and mountain regions for thousands of years. Although they are in fact living relatives of the vampire, Nocta Brimstone do not drink blood. Thier kind have developed more effective means of achieving the nutrients they need to survive. Thier differences to Vampires are in the fact that they do not transform into a human form nor do they use thier fangs to suck blood from the necks of unsuspecting victims. They use a highly accidic mucus that they sprey to wound thier prey, from glands in the back of thier throaght. This acid allows for easier digesting as thier prey starts to melt as the acid eats away at the skin and bone..creating a liquid nutrient.
Nocta Brimstone are rarely seen as most victims never live to tell the tale. They are in fact nocturnal, and sleep during the day. Thier main escape from the daylight is by using thier large hands and feet to burrow down deep into the ground, where they hibernate.
Other Information, not part of the description- I was messing around with the image by flipping it upside down and around and around.. because originally i just had him standing on ground..but I felt he was more threatening and put his wings and background family information to good use when I flipped the image..added some falling pieces of rock and dirt..some vertical pieces of grass and vines..and there u have it. I looked at various animals for the eyes and the best eyes for a nocturnal animal I found were those of a "Loris".

    concept: CUCUQTOSAUR "CUCU"
It's relative generation with actopuses exists since the ages before history. It sleeps in sea caves in day and goes to hunting near the water surface at nights. It loves to hunt big sea animals. Sometimes it attacks divers. It doesn't eat its victim its absorbs all of its victims blood with stinged channels in its suckers. It is fed with blood. when it is full up, its main body colors red because of the blood vessels. When the small stings in its suckers stick into its victim, extend inside and start to take blood from the nearest vessel. it cannot hunt shellfish.

    Gloklund:
    concept: Humboltz Thresher
The Humboltz Thresher is one of nature's most deadly nocturnal predators. Using its superior sense of infra-spectra vision, the Humboltz can see a Zardanian micro rat 1500 yards away. It benefits from having large soft-padded paws for stealthy approaches, as well as providing superior traction when reaching speeds of near 60 miles an hour. At the ends of its paws are razor sharp claws, which are non-retractable and can shred flesh from bone instantly. The tail of the Humboltz is a most lethal appendage, it can slash and whip it's enemies and proves to be a great defense.

    concept: Midnight Owler
The Midnight Owler - these simian creatures have recently been discovered in the few remaining areas of deep woods in the North American continent. highly regarded by proponents of The Simmons Evolutionary Principle, which holds, quite simply, that "you are what you eat", these creatures have adapted their appearance to better hunt their prey. they lie in wait in the tall trees, usually with just their heads sticking up from the branches, making vague and hushed hooting noises, resembling owls. owls, seeing their kin, stop to examine the hunting grounds where they are easily picked off by the Midnight Owlers.

    teyekanik:
    concept: Aldamandre
The Aldamandre is one of the most poisonous creatures discovered on the outer rim. Aldamandre packs were responisble for the massacre of entire colonies before they were finnally spotted via satelite and a proper specimen was captured.
Aldamandre produce a powerfull neuro-toxin secreted in phosphorous gelatinous form from glands located on the neck, back, and haunches. (see figures D and B.) The Aldamandre spread this gelly across thier territory, depositing it on trees and rocks and dug out pockets underground. The toxin is time released into the air and renders most creatures unconcious in minutes. Physical contact with the substance can parylize a grown man for hours. The Aldamandre patrol thier territory until it eventually finds a disabled victim.
Upon the disabling and discovery of its prey the Aldamandre will employ its powerfull toungue to pierce a main artery and quickly pump the blood of its victim into its belly. (see figure A) When the victim is completely drained of fluids the Aldamandre will use its powerfull tail and claws to rip its prey into quarters. Which it then devours whole.
The Aldamandre stomach can expand up to eight times its size to carry its meal. Digestion occurs over several days and sometimes up to two weeks depending on the size of the kill. The Aldamandre only hunts again after fully digesting a kill. (see figure C)
The Aldamandre never leaves a trace of its kill behind. Only through its eventual scat can one determine the species or identity of its prey.
The Aldamandre is not usually a directly aggressive animal, but it is well equipped for such occasions. The Aldamandre powerful hind legs can vault it into tree tops and high above its victims. It then prefers to attack from above or behind with its ripping claws. (See figure B.)
The Aldamandre. Truly one of natures deadliest creatures. It has no known natural predators.
    Recommended Equipment when combating Aldamandre:
    Heavy Weapons and Armour
    Full Respratory systems
    Night Vision optics
    GPS assisted guidence system
Off planet specimens are highly illegal. Violators will be executed.

    vaughany_boy:
    concept: Collared Nocturn (Night Stabber)
In the unexplored depths of the Amazon rainforest, this creature has dwelt for many years undiscovered; for avoiding discovery is the way it lives it's life. Usually found in the thickest areas of jungle, this bat-like species of monkey is carnivorous and during the day, it hides in elabourately built nests high in the canopy, where no large creatures could ever discover it. At night, the creature ventures out, creeping through the trees, but never beyond the edges of a clearing, until it finds a possible target; a sleeping or weary animal, unable to see in the darkness. The Nocturn uses fixed tusk-like horns on its wrists to deliver a quick attack, stabbing and strangling the creature into submission before dismembering it and eating what cannot be easily transported. Then, it takes what flesh it can carry through the trees back to its burrow to sustain it during the day.

    concept: Skulothran Patriarch
The Skulothran is a stalking predator which inhabits the lowland swamps of southern Florida. Only a few left in existence, these beasts hunt for sport. Blind, but not unaware, they use their extremely sensitive hearing sense to find and track prey. Their entire upper forehead and ear/auditory canal is a solid mass of bone. The structure houses a very sensitive sound perception system, much alike to bats. When their prey is located, the Skulothran will lay in wait, and then pummel the victim with their huge claws. Skrulothrans are known to snap cattle and other large prey in half upon takedown. During the mating season, the Skulothran Patriarchs are known to kill for sport, and are observed to be covered in blood throughout spring.

    xia:
    concept: Phyllodylian or NightTerror
On the very top of the food chain, the predator flies high in the night sky. They usually come in a group of five to six.
An average Phyllodylain is 4 ft high standing, 6-11ft wings-span, and about 6 ft tail length. Their estimated top speed is around 130 mph.
They navigate using high frequency (sub-sonic) echolocation, except they can actually visualize the surrounding like what we see in ultrasound.
The hunt: They are always out at night because of their sub-sonic echolocation has vast advantage over other creatures’ vision. The darker it is, the better for Phyllodylian. The most fascinating about this creature is self-generated electricity. The nodules around its neck and tail can generate high voltage. Spotting its prey from up above using echolocation, Phyllodylain flies over and slashes it with its tail. Then fly away. This will create a shock in the victim’s nervous system and shut it down entirely. After the prey became paralyzed, Phyllodylian then come back and pick it up. Easy meal.
Funfact: Phyllodylian has 350 lb pressure bite, very firm indeed, often use to make larger preys into smaller pieces. And they do like taking on larger preys.

    concept: Verinage Pteror
    Year: unknown
    Day: unknown
I write these as my last words, and only hope someone may find them someday.
I had the singular misfortune to hunt the open waters when the moons were full. Bitter irony that something in turn hunted me. A sailor's greed is often his death..and I find myself suffering the most horrific. I sit in the rotting forebulb of a Verinage Pteror. I can only watch as my once hale and healthy limbs slowly rot and become a reeking festering paste before me. I see the sun, feel the wind, but die by inches.
    * * *
This night I hear the surf against the shoals. My time draws nigh. For from the tales that I have heard of the unforturnate souls...I will be the spawn gift ....a bit of morsel for the female...as they mate.
I only pray that my spongy rotten femur to which I have attached this final missive shall lodge itself deeply within the sand or perhaps in the haven of a crag of a rock.
Kind sir, madam, master or mistress...my soul beseeches you to please foreward these my final thoughts of love to Kristinia Belmedge...she shall have my heart ever and always.
Hers in life and evermore in death....Caliph Heggerton

concept: Diamond hard crystalline exoskeleton, sprinting speed of 80mph, twin armour-piercing blade appendages, ravenous appetite for flesh, near silent operation and a really, really bad temper. Just some of the product features listed in the brochure for Newman Military Genetics most successful product line, the Umbra Lion 3000, also known as 'The Hungry Bastard'.
This vicious beast is designed to hunt at night or other low-light conditions using it's primary method of target location, sonar. The ultrasound echo is collected by a honeycomb structure that runs throughout the creature's exoskeleton, effectively turning it's entire body into a giant ear - a significant improvement in accuracy and speed of feedback over the system used by bats and moths on Earth. A highly developed sense of smell, thanks to the sensitive olfactory membranes ( frequently mistaken for eyes ) on the Umbra Lion's nose works in tandem with the sonar to make for a very efficient nocturnal predator.

    concept: Glaring Yale
Unlike most creatures on the perpetually dark side of Maturin VI, the Glaring Yale does not have significant night vision. However, it makes up for this with an extraordinary fluke of evolution. It has a large cavity inside its skull which is lined with an extremely reflective surface, and filled with Helium-Neon gas. Inside the cavity are many small bioluminscent nodules. When these luminesce, the helium-neon gas provides the pumping medium to attain the necessary population inversion to emit a crude but powerful biological laser. The Glaring Yale uses this laser to light its way and to blind its prey, many of which have extremely sensitive eyes. By focusing the laser it can also use it to burn and cut for short amounts of time.

    Fozzybar:
    concept: Moonlight Shock Dominatrix
A nocturnal predator needs to camouflage, sneak or lurk for prey? Bollocks! The Moonlight Shock Dominatrix is a total counter-evidence of this theory...it is as eye-catching as possible, even careful victims don't suspect any harm...how can such a noticeable creature be a predator, they might think and that's the attitude the dominatrix is waiting for.
When a victim is coming next to this strange creature it paralyzes or kills it with an electroshock using its tail...it generates electricity with an organ on the top of the body...Goring the prey with its forearms is another method to kill the victim...the dominatrix has no mouth, the spikes on the forearm are used to suck the fluids of the prey...
If required the dominatrix can affuse odors matched to the prey which is surrounding the predator. It can simulate nearly all odors, also it's capable of imitating sounds like rut noises of different animals...so the dominatrix exploits the nightly circumstances to lure prey, since nocturnal creatures are dependent on their senses...

yay finally! ok,my vote goes to mikecorriero this round. the rendering is just kickass and the concept is good enough to exist. i just love that face and the lightning!

    and some comments:
matt dixon -it looks too rushed and cheap for your standards.doesn't look like you put alot of thought into it,sorry.but i think you heard something likely before.
redehlert -too human like in it's behaviour for me.
helzon -it doesn't read as well as your last entries.also nothing indicates that it's a nightly hunting creature.
oregano -the concept behind it lacks abit. i mean wtf does he need those bigass claws for if he just eats moths? all he'd need was a big sticky tongue.
teyekanik, blindman, doughbot, xia -just doesn't show that it's a night scene.xia your colours are too "daily" especially, sorry.oh, and it doesn't look like it could actually fly.the head's too heavy.blindman your's is nice but it looks more like a storm than night coming.you should have used more blues, that's the general lightning situation of evening.
gloklund -nice and dark, but the final "oomph" is missing.might be the slightly monochromatic look.creature is almost the same value as the bg.
    fozzy -too weird to handle

good entries overall, but there can only be one.

    great round this week
i almost entered but didnt get the time to finish my entry... next time!

mikes is top: pretty close to what i had in mind but much better than what i'd come up with! i love the moon in the background: its a great composition: its nice how it worked turining the whole thing upside down too.

teyekanik: i love the design of your creature: i think a little more polish in the rendering and you could have pipped mike at the post. he has a great attitude and expression and the markings on the back of his head work real well. love the big mech style thighs too! some nice paint work in there: particuarly on the lower half of the large pose.

xia: yours is wonderful: excellent painting: technically my favourtie entry but i am not so keen on the actual design of the creature: it feels a bit 'uncomfortable' brilliant work though: a wonderful entry !!

BlindMan: great entry: its such a shame you ran out of time: really cool creature: looking forward to more from you!

Without a shadow of a doubt, Mike....you've got my vote and a tear down my cheek....beautifully done.

Dougbot cool creature and am liking the point of focus. I understand that you probably didn't get a chance to wrap this up due to other committments, but what you have speaks volumes. I still wish it was in a different environment/mood - not detailed, just more nocturnal.
Hallo Now that's one emaciated critter....does it eat after it impales something? The idea is interesting enough though.
Young_Paddy1 gettin' better - like this one over all of your past entries - starts of a good texture on the skin there, although the idea seems a bit played.
Simmi thanks for the sizing and detailed elements - really gives more information. The rendering is there in the small versions, but the overall creature kind of feels deflated and flat - be great to punch up areas nearer the viewer with more color/texture/detail and then fade back from there. You started it, but it feels muddy.
Leckronium Stellar piece...and I mean that. Your pencils were beautiful! I like the creature, the three views tell a lot as well. What I wasn't big on was the intensity of the purple bg - mainly in the circle - it's fighting to be more important than the creature. Question - does it always have it's tongue out? My cat does that where he gets 'stuck'....silly as all get out, he is.
Rosco You and Young Paddy have similar ideas which means to me that it's an immediate solution that suggests spending more time exploring your creative prowess. It's in ya....now go find it.
Oregano By far your best piece I've seen in the COW market. BG colors are working as they help set up the foreground action. Your figure looks pleasing too. I think the bridge of the nose would have a brighter hilight due to proximity to the light source, but unfortunately that light is stolen by your creature's eyes. I like the creature....good idea and definitely disturbing - looks like something is wrong with the lower teeth...missin' a few?
Carnifex An interesting idea with some nuggets of beautiful color specifically on/around the left eye and the greenish wash in the middle lower third. All else kind of falls away and wish I could have that coloring throughout in the proximal details and dusky/shadowy for all else. The bg light source doesn't do it for me.
Nightfend Looks like you had fun rendering this bad boy up. I'm calling it my blue light special. My only thought is that its visual weight makes me think that branch is going to be breakin' soon. Why do I say this - well, the way it's rendering gives me the sense that the creature is almost metal plated - but I could be totally off my rocker. Lastly - color - I'd like to see you make this creature more dimensional by breaking out of your blue period and explore various shades of crimson and violet. Whatcha think?
Mike What can I sy - colors, creature, posture, point of focus, etc. All good in my book...Again...a tear falls from my eyes when I look at this. It's that good to me.
Crow I love it when someone posts ink work. You're on to somethin' here - try to push point of focus with textures, hilight/shadow, etc. Right now, I spend too much time looking at the black shapes between the two forelegs and at the base of the tail. I see a little bit of Helzon in you.
Mert Okay...that's interesting - I'm seeing where you're going with it and that's all good. Feels pretty 2D to me....wish I could tilt this image so the diver is really flailing in front of me with all of the tentacles as atmospheric as possible and this huge looming creature coming down to sting away. The lighting, albeit a bit off for me, is a good visual director telling me where I should be looking next.
Xpose It's a good start, but I can see your exploration of shadows, colors, textures so much more. The forelimbs seem funky to me - the anatomy/mechanism of motion isn't hitting me as I'd hope it would.
Gloklund That's one mean critter. Is it related to the lava eating creature at all? Good pose - lion-like and the colors are pleasing as is the atmosphere/focus. Bravo!
Prehistoric Dude - this is a very interesting style/technique and I'm diggin' its more graphic stylings. Truly a step up from the cute but deadly concept. I don't have anything to say really...wish I did, but I guess I just like it for its pure simplicity and execution.
Teyekanik I like the various poses and the renderings of the head(s). Anatomy/mechanism of movement seems funky to me....but I do like the textures/colors being used in certain areas - good nuggets like carnifex.
Vaughany you keep improving! Kinda a wolverine pet, eh? At any rate, I like where you're going with this and your renderings are getting better and better. The lights on version has way too much light on it so it looks extremely flat - work on color shade variation (cool to warm, etc) and you'll have a very nice critter.
Jmascho Damn...don't come near me with that thing. Great textures, lighting, dust, etc. The blood in the hands seems a bit 'fresh' to me - guess it would be darker burgundy as it is in the shadows and oxidized, so to speak. I wish there was only light coming from that upper left....all else could have been more ambient and I'd have been elated. But fab work, none the less.
Xia Too damn cool - I can't say anything more here. Love the electrical aspect. You were my number 2 vote. Damn...those teeth rock.
Helzon Damn good story....thank you for writing in this fashion...worked like a charm. The only draw back is that I'm having a diff time determining the overall shape of the creature. But perhaps it will make a boat load more sense if it got all tonified Helzon style, ya know? Please PM me if you do tone/color it cuz I want to see it, bro.
Matt Hysterical concept copy as usual - you and Helzon win the prizes for laugh factor. Sure, it looks quick, but damn....I like it. The spatter spray is the only thing I'm going....um.....yeah.
redehlert yeah....so find time to do better, beeatch.
blindman welcome aboard - nice atmosphere, colors and layout - the only thing I don't see this creature needing is the horns. I'm not sure what it will look like finished, but it looks done to me. Concept copy - short, sweet....bravo!
Okelvin I love it when I see this kind of stuff - great cross section - my biomed bg thanks you....totally fun! All good, bro. In fact, I just pretty much dig the head.....rest of the body kind of falls away for me. It's funny...the facial expression says 'migraine' to me.
Fozzy whoa! your nightmare continued into this COW in a new form...I'm diggin' how you're not letting what you know form what you know, you know? Um...yeah....that crack! At any rate....the only drawback is that it feels rush-rendered in a few areas....but I do like the originality of it!

Okay, those are crits and they're my views and I'm stickin' to em. I've had little sleep and worked about 75 hours last week alone, so if I sound like a bastard....blame it on the rain -yeah, yeah, yeah....(did I mention I'm a Milli Vanilli-strawberry wannnabe? I didn't? Guess I'm not).

k - went with Xia's because I really liked the pic.

Runner up, and *almost* winner was MikeC. Should've made that branch dude - the pic still looks like it was just flipped to me

Honorable Mention: Gloklund. Really dug the picture.

I'll post crits on everyone elses' later, perhaps.

    Cheers, Great round everyone!

Honestly, I can't decide. So many good pieces on this topic, it's hard to assign a vote to just one. I do think that in the end I've gotta go with Mike's. Other people have pretty much allready summed up the reasons I went with his, just thought I'd say that even though the composition is a classic one I've seen before, there's a reason its a classic. The composition along with the emphasis detail-wise of the face just suck you right into the picture.

Just thought I'd add some comments about other entries:

Simmi-Octocow? Cowtopus? Great creature concept, and the interesting anatomy call-outs off to the side are fun. Only critique I have is that as a predator concept it doesn't work too well. It's body calls to mind a grazing animal, and predator's eyes are usually situated facing forward rather then outward to provide better tracking and focusing in on a single target out of a herd.

Xia-This one was definetly a close contender. I love the color scheme, and eye-less animals have a high creep factor.

0Kelvin-The non-square box layout is rarely seen around here, I'm glad to see something like this. The anatomical study of it's head is a nice touch, but I think I like the "snapshot" of it in action the best. It's body is interesting, but the legs kind of seem rather generic cartoon dinosaur legs.

Oh yeah, and thanks for the comment Redehlert. Yeah, looking at it I do need to work on finding a focus with texture/contrast. I'll see what I can do for the next topic. Thanks!

Thanks man! I tried really hard to keep the lighting/value as low as possible to give it that "nighttime" feel. It's very hard to adjust for multiple monitors. (Is there a standard that applies as far as monitor calibration? anyone?) Anyways, I had fun trying to get this critter in a pose that would feel very predatory, without just swiping a pose with ref. I kinda liked the result.

As far as similarities with my lava creature, I figure that they live on the same planet and are second cousins twice removed.
