i've been spending too much time salivating over the wonder that is you guys' artwork and it's time i got off my behind and created a sketchbook of my own. if i expect to leave this absolute beginner stage at all, i've got to practice right?
anyway, i guess introductions are in order. my name's deryk de guzman from manila, philippines. i'm a software engineer by profession (just graduated, yay me!) but i'm also a wannabe artist.
gonna post everyday for practice, so wish me luck with finding time and all.
here's my first post. laugh it up for now, cause by page 99 of this forum, i'll be at least 1% better than this hahaha.

hum, this is really good!
I like the first pic att the top. My advise to u would be to work on proportions and anatomy tho. Better to practise that before starting to practise rendering, I think. Try also to use a bit more hard pencils when sketcheng. HB is the best one I think.
And of course I gonna give u the tip to get your self your very own book abaout the human anatomy. It's very important. Otherwise try using Loomis stuff from the net.

i got the scott robertson and feng zhu dvd's from gnomon and, in a flash of inspiration, decided to try and create something while taking a break from studying the dvds.
here's a concept for a robot sentry i did earlier today. sketched and painted in painter ix.
still getting the hang of drawing on a tablet. some lines just seem to be harder to draw than others hehehe.
critiques would be highly appreciated!

Craig Houghton: the dvds are great so far. i don't know if i just had it in me all along, but i noticed significant improvements are watching the dvds carefully and practicing the techniques. i think its also important to mention that i got the dvds as much for inspiration as i did for information. watching feng speed sketch those robots from out of nowhere makes you just wanna draw for hours on end. and yep, my neck hurts from doing concepts of my own now.
thanks for the critique. i saw the shadow looked odd but couldn't quite put my finger on it. would you be able to suggest a fix? thanks a bunch.
wuts up man. youve got a good handle on rendering, i would suggest while you do imagination work do some antatomy studies. it looks like with a little bit of that your work will up a notch. nice stuff

you guys are right. i've been enjoying myself too much working from imagination that i've left my figure study thread wayyy behind (check my sig). i'm gonna get back to work on it and post them studies in this here sketchbook.

messing around with environment thumbnails, as inspired by the feng dvd. dont mind the color spots.. just some mistakes i need to erase. i'm gonna try to add some values to this sketch soon.
edit: the object to the right that doesn't seem to fit in with the buildings is one of those no parking signs in extreme close-up. you'll see it later on but if you think it's a building as well then it's gonna look totally out of perspective.
wow impressive stuff deryk! Looks like that dvd is helpin alot! I got a feeling you're gonna be great at doing environments.
earlier street concept with values added:
this one started out with just the guy in the suit. i later had an irresistible urge to try and paint an environment around him. this was actually started before i worked on the city street concept above.
corky13: thanks for the compliment. i plan to post up a lot more environment designs. i'm trying to study proper environment drawing at the moment so i'll definitely have more up with different motifs.
here's a very rough idea sketch of an entrance to a city in space that i'm mulling over at the moment. mostly two-point but with a touch of three point as well.
and so the quest to be "unafraid" of environment drawing continues. i've realized this is harder than it looks, regardless of how pathetically simple my design is.

A practice sketch I did with a mechanical pencil using a photo reference. This is a sketch of a muay thai fighter. Some stuff I had to fill in from imagination, i.e. the rear hand since I felt the pose would be more dynamic then. But due to lack of lighting reference, I just left it with a pencil fill. The other hand and front leg were also much too dark in the picture so I tried at least putting in some line art as place holders.
This was mostly for rendering practice, to see what realizations I could come up with.
Things I learned from this exercise:
1. Even if the reference contains tonal values, a little research into the actual anatomical forms being rendered goes a long way. For me, this helped a lot in deciding stroke direction, since having a certain stroke direction helps me "feel out" the form a bit more, helping in rendering.
2. I learned how to better render softer/sharper changes in form with softer/harder boundaries between light and dark values. Although it's very far from perfect, I feel I'm a lot closer to doing it right than before.
I know I could've handled the shorts better though. It was pretty hard to accurately get the very small subtleties in tonal changes. Time to practice some more!

Spend more time!! The cast drawing looks a bit rushed- when it definitely should not. There are splotchy values which should be a no-no! The object of doing a cast drawing is to gain a better understanding of light and value. When you just draw without focus you lose learning potential- different exercises have different focuses. Go back to it and make the values so smooth that we think it's a photo of the real cast. That's how it should be!!

Are you talking about the last picture in post 18? The actual drawing doesn't really look that bad at all. The flash from the camera really ruined the values and gradations, which is why I decided to take a picture without it, but one that returned really dark results.
But you're right in any case, as there's no possible way that a person would look at my work and just *believe* they can reach out and touch it. That's definitely a goal worth aspiring to. More practice coming up for sure.
I bought myself a copy of Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy and found it's more informative than any other anatomy book I've seen. Never have I more clearly seen the changes in the surface topology of the human body.
Here are a couple of head studies I did from the book's information a few minutes ago.
For those of you who have the book, or know more concrete measurements, I'd appreciate draw-overs, especially of #1 in the image. I know where the brow-line should fall and where the occiptal bulge in the back ends, but things like where the jawbone is located from the side, etc are pretty rough for me still.
I'm working on more. Til then, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I decided to have some fun today.
Here's an attempt to do a quick sketch from imagination after skimming through Hogarth. Holy hell hands and feet are hard to do though. You can even see a few trial runs at drawing feet on the top right section of the page before I drew them on the body.
You'll probably notice the rendering is a lot more high contrast towards the top part of the torso. I was going to try and go for a high contrast, detailed rendering, but decided to go for the quick sketch instead, since a lot of the anatomy was guesswork from memory.

Still at it? I am looking for long six years to connect to art community, with a need to get back to live figure drawing, Any group you can recommend? I hesitate to post my art work it is severely classical and Oriental. Need friends for discussions and sharing. Anyone left who is familiar with the old "live and let live" adage?
