thanks 'stoph for the comment, to be honest it started out as a different character, and I kind of last minute decided he could be my frankentstein. The one I'm working on now, is a lot closer to your suggestions, and more to what I want rendered. I hope you check it out when I post it. Thanks again.
Here's my pic. Again, lack of time makes this a not-so-quick sketch (it took longer than I had to devote to it; gonna suffer tomorrow). I couldn't just stop with one monster, so I covered Frankenstein and Dracula.
Frankenstein - basic idea: a buffed up, multi-ethnic version of the monster from the Mary Shelley's Frankenstein flick.
Dracula - basic idea: playing off the draconic heritage of the name (Drakul).
A lot of things are off, I know. Comes with sketching and my lack of patience sometimes - especially with inking (had to ink this because I can only 'scan' with a digital cam for now; tried to make it much more loose than usual, and messed up some bits along the way).
C&C always much appreciated.

Assignment # 4 STAR WARS
Description: One of the largest entertainment properties ever, full of rich characters, environments, vehicles, etc. Your task is to re-design any aspect of the franchise- costumes, droids, film characters, weapons, etc. I expect to see a lot here, and please no fan art, this is a re-design.

Here's a quick pencil drawing of my Darth Vader remix:
Hm... not much activity here, it seems. Here are my pics and their story.
I knew I was going to do characters rather than anything else right away. But which characters? After a bit of thinking, I decided to redesign the 'generic' Jedi and Sith concepts (if there is a generic Sith, anyway). Two sabers were supposed to be standard issue for each; moreover, one of them would have a protruding thingy, and the other a hole thingy, so that they could be joined together to form a double blade or separated at will. I didn't really like these much, so I went wacky (curved the hilts; if there were blades visible, they'd have the shape of a katana - after all, why not? ). Here are the visualisation sketches (quickly added some value only for the puproses of showing here, something like 15 minutes maximum):
But I didn't really like any of these, so I started thinking more, and then it hit me: the original Stormtroopers always seemed way too wishy-washy for me. Nothing stormy about them... and not a whole lot of troopery, either. They missed everyone, even with all those shots fired (I know, I know, plot devices), etc. The clones were a bit better, but they lacked the simplicity of the original troopers, on the other hand. So here it is, my menacing () Stormtrooper redesign (a sniper rifle and a heavy blaster attached to the backpack):
Enjoy. Or don't.

This is like a Darth Maul/Yoda crossover thing?
close-up of my work thus far:
Any pointers from you seasoned veterans would be great as this is the first digital painting I've ever committed to.

Definately will be joining this as well. . . I'll try and put in a re-design tomorrow. I just need to get my sketch finalized for the pulp magazine!

Awwww, man! I missed Universal Monsters and Star Wars redesigns! Damn, I shoulda been paying more attention to this thread.
I think a good idea would be to edit the title of the thread every time there's a new assignment. It would probably attract a lot more people.
I'm not surprised no one submitted anything for the Sandman. How can you improve on that?
Agreed with 0kelvin. The title change might attract more folks.
Oh, ang glikster - that would be extremely hard. Alas, the subject is not about improving. Just providing a different look and feel. Doesn't matter if it's better or worse, just as long as it's new. I would definitely have joined and tried to redo the Corinthian, and maybe some other chars. Better? Hell no. But it would've been fun.
Good point. I was thinking about that as I posted before.Originally Posted by Aremah
Assignment # 5 Legendary Creatures of Mythology
Description: Mythology is full of creatures that struggle against brave heroes, your job is to re-design the ones of legend. I'm not looking for re-designs of gryphons or dragons, etc. - These are specific creatures.
Ex. Grendel from Beauwolf
Chiron the centaur
Minotaur of Minos
Jenny Greenteeth the Hag
Porphyrion the Giant
Feel free to use any culture's mythology, but remember, Legendary.
Deadline: June 8th
Hrm, I'll whip up something revelent to this topic in study hall tomorow.
Uh, noobish question...should they be colored?
They can be sketches, colored, drawn in blood - whatever you want, just make sure you follow the other guidlines at the top of the page. Welcome aboard.
well the deadline for this is monday, and it seems that participation isn't going to happen, so unless I get a lot of complaints i'm going to end this activity and concentrate my energies into the illustration activity. Thanks to those who did participate, and feel free to join us in the other activity.
A shame, that. I only got on recently and at a bad time, otherwise I would've whipped up more stuff. Was looking forward to this current assignment, too, but time prohibited my joining.
If it's worth anything, I really like the idea and think that perhaps it's the lack of exposition more than the lack of interest.
