It's supposed to be epic! Spirit is an awesome album; all of the songs connect together with cool ambient rain effects. Love those guys.

    good art music:

    Beirut
    DJ Shadow
    The Joggers
    Boards of Canada
    The Album Leaf
    The Cinematic Orchestra
    edIT
    Kollektiv Turmstrasse
    Prefuse 73
    Re-Drum
    Asian Dub Foundation
    The Bad Plus
    Bonobo
    Destroyalldreamers
    Karl Sanders
    Russian Circles
    Xploding Plastix

By the way Jake, have you heard Karl Sanders' solo work? It's very, very good.

Yeah, it's fantastic. I enjoy Nile as well but I think I may like his solo stuff better, actually. Have you heard his new album yet? I haven't gotten around to it myself yet.

I've heard a song I think. It's awesome. He's such an amazing musician (from reading the bio chunk on his Myspace I'm also pretty sure he's aware of this as well). The moods he creates are great. Though, hopefully, this one won't have quite as much electric guitar. I felt like that kind of took away from Saurian Meditations.

colbert, daily show, leno, jimmy fallon, & misc. hulu crap. I like to have it running while i draw, i mainly like to listen to the jokes and current events.

I do however listen to Metallica or nine inch nails every day to and from work.

I listen to the sounds of my surroundings. The birds outside, the wind that blows, the rain hitting my windows etc...

I cant listen to music while drawing or painting. I find myself losing concentration when I cant help but sing along.

I love a very broad range of music while I work. For me if I'm relaxing while I draw, it's Nujabes. But if I'm on a deadline, it's DragonForce (the greatest band......EVER).

    DragonForce

    Nujabes

It depends on what I'm working on, I tend to listen to music that inspires the mood I'm getting at.. but generally speaking:

    Metallica
    Current Rock
Game Music; Usually Final Fantasy, or the Game Music channel at AOL radio
    Classical Music
    Techno or Industrial
    Comedy
Sometimes inspirational speeches or motivational coaches (Tony Robbins is what I'm on now)

I like all kinds of music, so it really depends on my mood. Lately it's all been Final Fantasy

    Sound like my kinda guy.

There is a huge demand for these types of stuff if you ask me.
It's a good subject to explore and I feel frustrated that there's no real collections out there for mood music that delves into moods other than the general themes, relationships, who's the thug/big shot, etc etc....

    Cartoon music
    Circus music
    Corny music

My favourite is mysterious and bizarre muzic.(Ever heard of Mezmer's Glass armonica?)
and a new found favourite sci-fi fantacy music(Old ET and kid's ski-fi movie type themes)
There are other's like heroic drama stuff and orchestrals

Maybe someone can make a buck selling playlists.

Some game sound I liked alot was the American mc Gee's Alice nine inch nails composed sound tracks.

I even have some ooooold favourites, The ultima 8 midi files. The best composed midi files I ever heard. The good thing about game music is that they are desighned to loop seamlessly and keep you in the mood of the setting.

It's just that you need alot of time and effort building lists into something you can use from general music into like a database. Wonder what directors does, I guess they just pay current artists to make stuff.

I stand by my claim. DragonForce is so awesome it makes Angels cry! Makes Legos build themselves! Makes the wolf shirt more powerful! Makes aliens probe other aliens! Makes geeks into Gods! PLUS Andriod did the album art for their last album, how can they not rule harder than anything else on the planet? .....nay.....THE UNIVERSE! .....I need help.

    Matrix Soundtrack
    Pi Soundtrack
    Solaris Soundtrack
    From Dusk Till Dawn Soundtrack

Cry of the pain in their ears from live preformances. No love for studio bands here.

a whole mixture of stuff, dubstep for robots! harsh but can imagine some great imagery to heavy dubstep.

other than that just anything I like really, its just background for me really, i dont really spawn many ideas out of music, more emotions which I use to inform ideas i guess.

But yeah, I'm with you.... I rarely listen to the mainstream radio, I tried it recently (listened to the KATT here in OK), it just doesn't do it for me. There's no doubt I love rock, my fav genre, it's just that I can only take so much of it at a time. I love almost all music (barring stuff like country, even then I kinda like the old stuff when it was more blues/bluegrass), so it really depends on my mood.

I really like some movie soundtracks too, like the Nightmare Before Christmas.. mmm

other "mood" type bands (good imagery)

    Rammstein
    Linkin Park
    Gorillaz
    Tool
    Led Zepplin

I could go on forever, but I have work to do

Looked at the Gnomedudes workshop inking video from the june ImagineFX CD.

I wonder what that dude is hearing in his head while he's inking like that. The james bond or mission impossible theme songs perhaps?

He used the words "Getting into it" so I guess there's a mode there that he get's and uses to get a specific type of energy in his lines. Kinda made me understand what has been gloriefied in some comic book artist's rendering styles.

All my pencil is doing at the moment is trying to waltz with two left feet.

I haven't seen that, but I can imagine what you're talking about. There's a certain vibe I'm usually going for, and if I can find it, everything suddenly becomes awesome for me.

I still suck as an artist tbh, but when it comes down to it, music and art go really well together for me, because then I can start to feel what I draw, and that means alot to me.

And, yeah, about dragonforce....I agree that they're pretty awesome, but not my best band ever...that goes to Metallica

The hour long Solid Steel podcasts (which are free on iTunes) are badass to work to. This weeks' mix from Boom Monk Ben is sick.

Stuff to loud or fast distracts me a bit. It's like the rhythm and tone has to be on a similar level. Some rock, some slower electro, that kind of thing.

Ruby Throat, Queen Adreena, IAMX, Roisin Murphy, Patrick Wolf, Husky Rescue, Giant Drag, The Smiths mostly. Tragically and embarassingly, some J-pop has also been creeping in a little lately.
