There's nothing wrong with Deviantart in of itself. Sure, the large majority of the users are crap, but it's still a very useful service they provide, and there are some very talented artists if you dig deep enough.

He speaks the truth. For a myriad of reasons, I eventually left, but it was a spiff place to start out, if nothing else.

Totally agree man. If I hadn't done my little thing on Deviantart first, then I probably wouldn't be learning to darw today. I would have given up art a while ago.

I like the print service, and this one time I got Daily Deviation, that's about the only good things on the site.

I've met and talked with quite a few amazing artists there. Much prefer places with some higher standards, I can only deal with line paper and webcam shots for so long.

Get rid of the supposedly creative angsty anime oriented fanboy diseased teens and you got yourself a decent community.
But anyway its a good free web space to organize work regardless from the median IQ of 55 and the oh-so-damnable-one-liner-comments-in-the-hope-of-getting-attention-because-my-pageviews-are-so-low.

Some good artists there, but not a good place to learn. You never really see any serious critiques, just a lot of "Oh wow, that poorly drawn anime fanart rocks, can u give a tutorial?!". Basically I think of it as being similar to the OOh & AAah section we had on here a while back.

Not unless you organize work by giving away all your rights to it...DA recently had a nice little Terms of Service Change, wherein if you post it on DA, THEY have the right to use it, publish it, promote the site with it, sell reproductions, etc., without any say from you.

Since a large portion of the art there is crap, it's not that big of a deal, UNLESS you've got a really nice work up there, and then you find it on a DA calendar or some such being sold, with no monetary compensation back to you...

Not really, the admin cleared it up, it's nothing like they sell your work for money without your permission. You still maintain your right to your work and you have the option to let them use it for monetary purpose or not.

I ain't a member, but I am addicted to the damn place. I have over 45 fav's there - all very good artists, along with a good collection of stock artists.

Personal favourite has to be Suzi9mm - pure class.

There is a lot of crap there too, but with over 11 Million submissions, there's plenty to see. Plus the print service is damn handy sometimes.

i like da. it has a lotta turdburglers but it also has a lotta very good artists that would put any of you (or me) to shame.

i also like how it keeps track of stats and stuff.

the ONE thing I like about deviantart is the favorites thing. I start with any random piece, look at their favorite artists (who are usually at least somewhat better than who I'm checking out), then look at THAT person's favorite artists, etc., until I get to some sweet art that I never would have found before. Much more efficient than wading through crap on any forum I've ever found.

I used to have a deviant art account but the reason I deleted it is because you have to go through too much crap just to post a freakin image!

i think the biggest draw for deviantart is the favorites system. it effectively lets you find good work out of literally millions of particles of crap. it would be particularly interesting for conceptart because we'd see what inspires/interests professionals, people just getting started, or just your friends. it would mean a lot of work in terms of backend writing though :/.

the ability to add comments would also be nice for the new gallery thing you guys are implementing.

I already mentioned it for me...the "favorites" thing. It's an excellent way for us to get turned on to artists we haven't seen. I've honestly come across dozens of new artists by looking at people's favorites in the past week. It especially helps me find artists who, for one reason or another, haven't put new work up recently. It is the ONLY reason I've ever looked at deviantart.

The only thing that comes to mind for me would be the watch feature. That basically allows users to to notified in a message center when a (personally specified) favorite artist has posted artwork. This is the only way I can stomach deviantart as it limits the amount of time that I have to spend wading through crap to get to even the mediocre stuff. It's also very gratifying to see who watches you and to see that you have 10 or 15 more people looking out for your stuff everytime you post new art.

edit: beaten to the punch again.
