    Cow C.O.W. - featured tutorials - Who's up?

    C.O.W. celebrates 10th weekiversary

I noticed a tutorial request here and there from some members, asking other participants of C.O.W. for a tutorial for their entry...

So, C.O.W. is here to have a nice competition, challenge, showcase for your art, getting crits and comments and learning from each other.

I want to support the last part with this idea...

Who would like to post a tutorial of his C.O.W.-entry?
Post a C.O.W. entry of which you would make a tutorial!!!

No matter which entry it is...

I want to see who would do a tutorial, after one week or whatever we will make a poll and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd will post a tutorial for the masses

I post this just to show how your tutorial-offer should look like...not because i think my work is worth a tutorial...

You read my mind! I was just getting ready to post a challenge to all the c.o.w. winners to post a tutorial.

I noticed on the DSG that people often post the number of hours and the software used. The number of hours would be particularly interesting, giving a general idea of just how much work goes into these winning pieces. (Which might discourage posts that only took an hour.)
My c.o.w. entry had ten hours of painting in it. eeek. That is probably way too long considering the results. I want to learn how to paint faster and more efficiently.

    Yes! Tutorials PLEASE!

Why not make this an open thread where everyone can post tutorials/wips of their COW entries.. just having the three best seems a bit limiting. I would hate to miss out on some interesting technique just because the final result wasn't one of the top three...

    Just my 12 euro cents

(and I promise to participate in the C.O.W. a lot more in the future....)

    Fozzy,
Excellent idea!!, I have some questions:

How much time I would have to make a tutorial?
I want to see who would do a tutorial, after one week or whatever we will make a poll and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd will post a tutorial for the masses
? One week? I don´t understand that part...

    And the last one,
What is WIP? Is something like a sketch in pencil?
And DSG? Is something like a WTF?

    Cheers!

A tutorial should look like this basically:

    http://www.dougbot.com/forum/cowtut.jpg

It's a tutorial made by dougbot for a C.O.W. entry...so it's up to you how detailed you want to make the tutorial and how much time you want to invest...

    OLSEN
I thought also about doing this without a poll, but then again, how many people would do a tutorial without being asked...especially the pros don't have much time for a tutorial (which needs really much time, if done well!!!), but if members vote for them, they may give it a try...

Also if everyone posts a tutorial it could be a mess and maybe they would look rushed and the whole idea/thread would lose it's originality and interest...i don't know or am i totally wrong with this thoughts???

I see your point Fozzy but asking people to offer a tutorial, then putting it into a poll seems like it would be a bit disheartening for anyone who wasn't voted for.

Perhaps do it the other way around and just open a poll with past COW entrants and / or winners and let us vote on who we'd like to see a tutorial from, then approach the top few to see if they'd like to spend time organising something for us..?

In my view, it's interesting to see people's process / read their thoughts whatever their perceived skill level or style. As long as there were a few trademark Fozzybar rules ( ) designed to keep the standard of presentation and information at a reasonable level, I don't see why a tutorials thread couldn't invite contributions from everyone.

I hope Dix, Negrotuerto, Salaryman, and Fungi (and Doug if he wants to make another one!) would be willing to put something together for this. Week in and week out, those guys produce some amazing stuff. Oh, something from Xia and Cake would be nice too...Oh man, too many to choose from!

I totally agree with JeffZNY - if we could have a tutorial on how Fungi did that kick ass Siren, that'd be superb. Line by delish line.

HA! Now i know why i wanted to let the artists post if their want to do a tutorial...it's the simple fact, that some people just don't save all their steps from sketch to finish, so a tutorial for a flat image would be pain in the ass...

I for myself mostly have many layers in my psds, so this would work to "fake" a progress, maybe others also save their psds with layers, but i know that many flatten their images after a while to keep the file small...

So, that's why i still ask: Who wants to post their tutorial?

Also feel free to post tutorial-requests here, i will start:

I want to see a tutorial from:

lukavi - doesn't matter which entry, since i am interested in how you get your unique style

Negrotuerto - especially interested in the way you bring colors to your b/w renderings

Matt Dixon - a classic C.O.W.-participant, we want to see inside your brain!

    Are you kidding?

For your first entry you say, that would be a great starting-tutorial for the thread, since it's one of the official mascots of C.O.W.!

Send me a pm and i will make a new thread for the tuts only...!

    Matt Dixon Rules

I would love to see a Matt Dixon Tutorial as well. Just knowing what programs he uses and what tools would be an enormous boon to all of our knowledge.

Plus, if he could post his social security number, credit card numbers (with expiration dates), personal vital statistics, workout routine, home address, secrets for success in bed, skin care regiment and most embarrassing childhood story.... that would be great too.

Ok, Matt just sent me his tut, it looks great!

I am waiting for a reply of the admins to get the go for hosting the tutorial-images...

I will post dougbots tutorial also in the tut-thread then (of course after asking him)...

    What do you think:
Shall i open a closed thread like the "winner gallery" to avoid masses of posts which will mess the thread or

Shall i open a tutorial-thread for all tuts with posting allowed?

open thread for one week, allowing people to ask for precisions and the maker of the tutorial to answer to them, then clean it up if you can and cloes it,

    would be my suggestion
(why am I only posting when it's about rules?! )

Yeah, I think an open thread ( even if only for a limited time as GomenNasai suggests ) would be good. When my thing goes up, I'd certainly like some feedback to find out if it's at all useful or interesting and when other tutorials appear, I'd like the opportunity to ask questions. If the author of the tutorial is willing to answer, a bit of Q+A will only increase the information available and that has to be good for all.

Who would I like to see?

I would really like to see Dougbot actually. The colors that are achieved in his work are phenomenal, and the textures are really rich. I would really like to know the programs and techniques behind his work.

Thank you for your time and consideration in reading this post.

Sorry, I only saw this tonight. Flattered that I would even be on the list! All the psd files of my past COWs (or any file for that matter) are deleted after posting because my prehistoric computer can't handle the pressure. So Im afraid I don't have any step-by-step to show at the moment. But I'll definitely keep it in mind on my next COW entry.

You all have a good one. Peace!

Fozzy I would love to see a tutorial from that dream/nightmare eater one, it's one of my favorites choice in that COW.

There's gotta be a way to hang on to them. Fozzy is right, mankind is going to need to see them someday. Here's a great way to do it. Yahoo mail now provides 1 gig worth of storage last I checked. Get a yahoo free account and email the big files to yourself. So long as you log in once every three months or so, viola, free storage.

Anyhow, Lukavi definitely gets my vote for the most desirable tutorial. There are often a lot of similarities between artists when it comes to technique -- sometimes the big difference is just a matter of style. However, in Lukavi's case, not only are his works a style of his own, I think there's a number of technique related approaches at work there that some, such as myself, might not be able to notice easily.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but its for a good purpose. A lot of people requested a tutorial by Negrotuerto, and he posted one in the Finally Finished section, I don't know if you have seen it.

    Here is the link:
    Negrotuerto's tutorial

    I hope he doesn't mind : P
