Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook.

Welcome to the Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook. We have been talking about Ringling over in the Art Schools and Education forum, but we should be showing some of the work we have been doing. I am one of the many here on this website that was just accepted this year to Ringling (I am going into Computer Animation). So I will start it off with the little group collage of caricatures everyone is doing of themselves. If you are going to Ringling this fall or if you are an alumni or even if you are already a student there now feel free to post art of any kind. We just want to build a little Ringling community so that some of us can get to know eachother better before we start there this year.

Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook.

(p.s. This group collage is open to anyone connceted to Ringling..alumni, students, pre college program, new acceptances...just email me with your picture and Ringling or Conceptart in the subject and I will add you in. I would like to see this picture really grow so get them done and get them to me. )

Just updated this list of all the freshman I know of that are going to Ringling this year. I compiled it through this site and conceptart.org's Ringling Thread. I of course don't have real names, but this was the best I could do. If you know of someone else that should be on this list let me know, I'll gladly add them. Also if you know the person or are the persons at the bottom of the list, I didn't know what your major is, so I'll fix that too when someone notifies me.

I need to scan most of my art so I can post something that I actually took time on, but just to get something up...here are just some goofy (pun intended) pics about Roy Disney and Michael Eisner

Save your money and save your children! Hurry!

    No just kidding.
    It's a nice shcool
I go there (here), its fine, its ok, its not a ripoff only if you specificaly want a specific job that has to do with computer animation in pixar /dreamworks /etc.

IMO, If you're not, its too expansive.
So my advice to you is to find your focus, in case you haven't found one. There's plenty of people here that study with no better wish than to do "cool movies and shit..." or "I dont know.. maybe some children book illustrations, that sounds cool!"
    Waste of money.

But hey this is sketchbook thread, what am I babbling about.

I take it you believe that unless you are doing the computer animation program ...go to a less expensive school and you will get just as good or a better education...?

Lots of kids wasting time, parents money, and a seats in a program others would love to have...typical art school... it's their waste to not take advantage of the resources around them. I agree with you that unless you know what you want to do don't get into such an expensive situation, try it out at a lesser school and see if that is really what you want to do.

I love this little tank icon...

Hett. You are awsome. I love the..Disney Wars comic. So true. So so true...

    ...

Anyhow! Nice stuff Hett! I guess I should post what I sent to get into the CA program at Rsad this fall... But I don't want to eat anyone's bandwidth, yummy as it may be. So here's a link!

    http://jayneko.com/ringaling.html

That's all the stuff I sent. I'm still thinking they were really nice and I was pretty lucky.

I also started a sketchbook here not too long ago. Jay's Sketchbook of Stuff. I guess I can do double work and post new works here and there eh?

Eh, yeah, very spending...but you meet people and learn things, nice area all that jazz. To me it's better than living at home...mostly the working at home I can't stand and won't a thing.

Anyways, I won't go into anymore of that blah. Just stuff in something a bit older as my scanner is buried ^^

Guess I should start by posting my portfolio too eh? Here's a link:

    http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~atso/Cr...Art/Portfolio/

aaaaaand some new stuff...here's a sketch I'm working on for no apparent reason. I started out by copying one of Ron Lemen's drawings (the chest and right arm) then it just kinda expanded from there and took on a life of its own. Face is referenced too cause I suck at making faces from the imagination. I plan on finishing it in a few days...gotta fix the left arm, feet and stretch the values more.

    Wow, great stuff!

Pixel-Awsome! Looks good. Can't wait to see it all colored and growling and such!

Jeju-Nice studies man! I still have to figure out how you guys render everything so sharp and nicely. Maybe it's the paper I work on.. XD

Dada- You never know. But then again, I'm an optimist..

Sula- Nice. But I told you so already. I still find the feet a tiny teeny bit big, but I might be wrong.. Foreshortening is tricky for me. XD

Ecco- Wow. You're putting my skeleton studies to shame. XD Mind if I ask what kind of medium issit? Black and red and white pencils? I really really like it.

jay- haha. its pen and white gouache. I used light and dark brown pens, though i found its not as light as I wanted it to be, and the dark brown is basically black. Thus, the second torso I was using blak and didn't realize it until it was too late. And the nice and sharp rendering...ha. That only happens when I really try, such as here. Otherwise I just get a mess of scribbles. Such as this:

Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook.

I don't think its so much the paper you work with, more the pencil/pen. Really soft pencils are hard to get really smooth and detailed, where as hard pencil/pen is the opposite. That's what I have found anyways.

jeju: nice studies, good contrast.. the animal page could use mroe form definition, or maybe its too stiff.

dada: lens flare! and colors are a bit saturated, but that could be a preference thing.

sula: I would go for more contrast. Didn't we go over this before? Dark tones=love. And those feet, blobs. Work on them. I don't know if shes wearing socks or anything, but its its just skin you should define the toes and underlying structures a bit more. Theres more proportion issues....but I'm not going to point them out.

I might not get too much sketch stuff this week or next, freetime at home is spent on a commision due at end of month and art done in school i dont want to waste time photographing until its all done. I'll still stop in here though

Ecco- Yup, I'll put up the finished one when I get the time to actually draw heh. As for proportion, I think the legs are wonky. No reference to go on so I had to shoot from the hip

Don't worry if you don't get in this year or even next. I have already been through four years of college and have been working for a year and I am just now starting this fall as a freshman. It's never too late. I know exactly how you feel being miserable at a school getting a degree you don't even want, but you are getting it for free basically. Only I was the one actually getting a business degree at FSU. Use whatever time you have before you apply to Ringling to create a really good portfolio, earn and save as much money as possible to help defray the cost, and keep your grades up. I checked out your stuff and it is really good. You would probably make it I would assume. The only problem is I don't know if Ringling takes new acceptances in the spring or if that's only for computer animation.

That's great that you have a full ride scholardhip to Stetson though. Take all the liberal arts and art history courses that you can while they are being paid for. Those will transfer and they will free up a lot of classes for you at Ringling when you want to take more art related classes and electives. You will still pay full tuition, but you won't be taking classes you don't want to.

    New Sketchers!

Lots of drawings time! I hope everyone doesn't mind.

I'm working on a poster for a poster contest/scholarship (voot!) and another illustration for an Adobe scholarship, which I doubt I will win because it's a pretty prestiges contest with lots of high talented artist dudes. But it's worth a shot

Anywho, I'm working on the concept sketchs. Here's what I got so far.

This one is for the poster contest.
It's a revamp of a similar drawing I worked on while I was at Ringling that a threw away. It's an angle helping a girl get out the the problems of this word (drugs, murder, blaa blaa blaaaaahhaha, etc.) At the bottom where her feet are I'm going to have hands coming up and grabbing leg like they're trying to pull her back down (peerpressure) that I haven't drawn that yet...or the angles wings. The bottom half is going to be all dark and evil like, the upper part (you can kinda see the outline, kinda looks like an outline of a moon if you can see it) I'm going to have it all happy like and such. It almost have a 'heaven hell' type thing going on, but not really.
My scanner was to small to scan the whole thing, and this is only a part of the drawing because my sketch is not or larger size to convey alllllll me thought ^___ ^. But I'm going to have another angel helping the girl get over to 'the other side' and some other angels trying to keep the "bad people" away from her.

At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to do this theme...because I'm a bit confused about the topic of the poster contest. It's something along the lines of Defensive driving without being violent and such...but I'm pretty sure it's a metephor for a deeper meaning consider where the contest is coming out of. Some Knights of Phinious I think, who stand for peace and prosperity. *cough* so yeah....ah...yeah..

So the really big thing I was trying to shoot for in this drawing was the girl looking like she is actually STRAINING/TRYING to reach out for something better. Which I think it's kinda hard to see right now because I haven't stuck anything in the drawing for her to actually be trying to get away from, but I'll get there. I started this one yesterday.

Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook.

This one is for the Adobe contest. There really isn't a theme that you have to draw something to, just catagories
This one is showing violence in our youth (yes, super cheesey potatoe theme, I love it!) The little boy is trying to mow over a chicken with a lawn mower. He's on a stage with a blue sky backdrop and toys on the ground. I just started this one, today, and hoping I can get around to coloring it.

My scanner couldn't fit the whole image on, again But it gives you the main jiff of what's going on.

Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook.

Drew this for my boyfriendoooo, but never gave it to him. ^ ____ ^

Ringling School of Art and Design (students and hopefuls) Sketchbook.

*cough* no comment. I was angered that day, but now I'm happy.

thanks so much, that settles a lot of nerves. i called the admissions dude today and was so thrilled to find out that there are a few spots for illustration left. i am visiting friday and will find out. i am so nervous. im pretty sure i can get in, but because i have to...i've never wanted something so bad...its really toough. its funny, cuz i had no worried about getting stetson...i thought i was challenging myself but i really was taking the easy, prescribed path... not what i really wanted. i am soooooo nervous....but it is ok if i dont get in...i just owuld like to be there with all of my friends...im already a year behind them.

so do you really think my stuff is good...ii have a some more still lifes from highschool on slides. they are looking for potential right? cuz i've only had 2 semesters of higschool drawing & painting & 3 semesters of ceramics (which i hated..but art is art).

sorry if i type too much, i just really need some peeps to talk to. thanks for all the support. bue,
    rew

I thinks you have a pretty good chance GBmoomoo. And the fact that you want this so much is a plus. I'm sure you'll get in! Hurry with the application and let us know how it goes, too. Us CA.org people have to take ringling by surprise.

....And....I should post more stuff here. ...Tomorrow. Yes.

GBmoomoo, i definately think your stuff is good enough to get into Ringling. Before you go down there whip out a few more drawings or one really good one and you will really be in the "artsy" mind set when you meet with the admissions dean. Hopefully you talk to Amy Fischer she is really nice. Good Luck and tell us the second you know.

Kendraad, nice drawings. Welcome to our little CA.org party

WayoftheStrega I always like seeing your work. Keep them coming.

Hey all nice drawings u all got there
Sorry if i don't post a lot...I suck at critiquing
so don't be upset if i say nothing...
    I just can't express myself...gotta improve..

Hett - hahaha I mucho like it!!

WayOfTheStrega - this is what i learned...when you paint try not to use black at all unless you really really really reallllllly have to cause without black it gives the richness in your painting. But i like it

Kendraad - welcome! Good to see you here and i dig ur style

Ecco - Nice animal study yea..i have to work on animal anatomy...the one i posted was just for fun hehe
