this is a little sid eproject i have been working on for my nephew: he designed the four characters at a family meal with me a few months back. i decided i would work them up and make him a poster of their exploits...
really enjoyed the process and am now underway with the final image. thought i would put it here to get some feedback...

the characters are fire dude, water girl and the two guys down front are their mentors. my fave is the guy with the 'fighting brain' as dan put it!

C&C would be much appreicated on this one as it one i want to nail. obviously its still very WIP.

I really like that second picture of the girl, jake. There's a real sense of movement through the figure and the fluidity of the fabric in particular is very nice. I think the hands are letting it down a little, though. The fingers should probably be a bit more slender and elegant. I think 2006 could be a big year for petticoats in character design...

    Keep it up!

    Ta, Nick.

Nice works. Remember not to suffocate yourself with a hard outline. The life studies are great.

That painting is real nice, mr. Gumbleton. Good sense of lighting and form. I like the hinted at nature of the feet as well. Looking forward to more from ya!

thats looking nice. couple of crits:
her head is pretty angled, but her features aren't-you can still see the bottom of her nose, and her eyes still look like your looking at them from straight ahead. ref is your friend, use it!
compositionally, she is zipping you straight off the edge of the page, and the focally point (her face) is right at the bottom. maybe give the image some more space at the bottom and use some background elements to steer your eyes back into the picture.
    keep at it!

cheers ben , nice to actually get some constructive criticism for once !

i will have a play with her face tonight and see what i can do about the composition. beck looked at this one and gave me her 'meh' response so i knew it wasnt quite right!

i will be putting up some images for my kaplinski stuff soon, would much appreciate your input into them too.

thanks for the constant encouragement mate, appreciate it a lot!
    cheers
    jake

wasnt gonna post this yet but i guess its better to get feedback and corrections sooner rather than later on it.

first i took a better scan of the pencils

now i have started blocking in the paint

i want to try and acheive a high standard on this piece (and the others in the same series) so feedback is wanted superbad on these . don't hold back now!

That last piece looks like it's coming along nicely. Although the legs seems *little* off balance. Also, the area in between the legs looks a little bit crooked. Keep it up man, can't wait to see the progress.

cheers for the advice jake, i will play around with the leg positioning later once i have merged down my linework mate. ps, my name is jake too, what are the chances eh?

here is an update on her, i painted over most of what i had done to add more exciting lighting. i think it has much more pop now? what do you guts think? really enjoying this character. fun fun.

Here's the crit you asked for!

The overall pose looks pretty good - perhaps try adding a bit more curve to her midsection; the legs also look a bit too straight, and her right leg looks like its been positioned just to fit inside the image - i'd try giving the image a bit more space on that side. Also, compared to the rest of her body, her arms look a bit too short.

The hand that's visible looks a bit expressionless (sort of like its been 'stuck-on') - maybe try putting it into a more interesting position. I also think you need to put a bit more work into the feet - the shapes look a bit off at the moment.

Almost there! - I think you might want to re-think your colours a bit - the stripy top and bloomers work nicely, but the yellow boots and and dark, saturated blue corset I think need reconsidering.

Last of all, I'd try adding a bit more form to the background, as it looks a bit too vague at the moment.

Seems like a lot of negatives, but that's not the case - overall it's a lovely image, and with a bit more work, I think it's going to be a winner!

Hey great stuff. I'm sure I posted in here a few days ago... oops!

Anyway, your digital stuff is getting so solid. Love the spped paints, as much as the more finished stuff.
Those two pens drawings of that girl though... WOW!
I love them. did you draw in pencil first or just dive in with the pen? The lines are beautifull. and the black stripes on the shirt work so well.
    Please do more : ]
Also, curious why you don't use those to paint over, instead of the pencil version?

    Keep up the great work!

    Peace

res: hi mate, cheers! you oughta get your sketchbook updated ryan, your latest stuff is killer!

voraz: thanks! i prefer working traditionally really but playing with painter is such fun. i am trying to get to a place where my made up stuff and my referenced stuff are of similar quality but its slow progress!

fox: loving your stuff recently, starting to get a real style to it. i am currently doing a paintjob on the girl arching her back. i intend to do a few pieces of the kaplinskikov girl... will defo put more up. i work straight with pen about half the time but those two are pencils that i worked back over. i am working with pen a lot: still tying to capture a certian fluid line that i just done have yet. thanks for your support mate!

blue mech. cheers: will update that one soon, hopefully not so muddy now!

mya: your are a hero mate, you keep me going with it day after day. a pleasure to work with and a massive help artistically.
