    rick_hershey:
concept: The Octeopathiticus Maximus Poisonator is a deadly marine creature that can live in both deep and shallow waters. It is a dangerous carnivore that must constantly feed in order to maintain its high matabolism. The unique feature of this creature is that it uses a mild sedative in order to paralyze smaller "cute" creatures to use as a type of bait for larger animals. This form of "fishing" is very affective and has proven to continue working through out the centuries.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    LegacyPunk:
concept: The striped shade slug is about 4 feet long and usually resides under the shade of trees. It waits for its prey, usually squirrels and small mamals, untill they are close enough for it to strike. It lashes out and either entraps or impales its prey with its long hidded teeth. It then, like some starfish, projects its stomach (tounge) onto its prey and starts digesting it right on the spot, from the outside in, whether its dead or not. It was most recently discovered by an elementary school teacher after noticing that half her class were missing. Over the years the slug has figured out that it can catch unsuspecting children and has developed its cute camoflage and making a purring sound when a child is close. Some of them are known leapers and should generally be avoided.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    vaughany_boy:
    concept: Buggin Snuzzle
The Snuzzles once were are civilised species, tribal in nature, living in large family groups. They mated for life and grew close to those around them. Until a sudden evolutionary jump tore the small animals apart. Upon reaching adolescence, the Snuzzles began to secrete a poisonous, acidic substance from their pores. These cursed Snuzzles, called Buggins by their peers became outcasts. Sent to live outside the village, never to return, for fear that they might spread their condition and injur many others. The Buggin Snuzzles however, continued to be born and to accidentally kill off their normal friends until the culture was destroyed. Now the only Snuzzles that remain are the Buggin Snuzzles. The only ones imune to their toxic sweat, they roam the forests and jungles, looking for people to befriend. Emotionally scarred from their being outcasts, they want nothing more than someone to love them and are very freindly. However, whenever a Buggin meets a creature to be friends with, any contact horribly burns them and often the poison kills even the largest of creatures if it enters the bloodstream. As such these animals are doomed to wander in dispair, making and accidentally killing friend after friend after friend.

    Prometheus:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Bennett:
concept: Decroded Shmegmite: Bigger than a breadbox, extremely venomous, and cute as a button. The DS is 2nd in deadliness only to its far superior cousin the Pap Shmericus Palamite.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Prehistoric:
concept: The Meeplers are the bastard children of an old local legend called "The Wheedle on the Needle". Usually spotted around the Belltown area, close to their ancestral home and object of worship, The Space Needle. During the week they can be seen sleeping in alleyways and under dumpsters, but citizens of New Seattle are warned to keep a watchful eye on the weekends. Starting friday mornings, the Meeplers travel in packs, robbing the unwary for drug and beer money to fuel their "Friday Night Fur Parties", which usually end sometime on sunday and result in the injury or death of at least 25% of the partygoers. Their reproductive cycle is very fast, and needs to be, to replenish their numbers lost in their crazy weekend binges. Few people have witnessed these parties, but those who have are left with troubling nightmares of voilently flying fur that persist for several weeks.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Uziel:
    concept: Seadragonus Paralymfis
This little creature of joy is my pet bubbles. He has a huge system of tubes and tanks to his disposal to swim to all corners of my laboratory. Unfortunatly direct contact with him is impossible. When touched this little creature can drain all your life-energy leaving you paralized for life or dead. How he does that? I don't know; I don't want to use him in experiments, test of any kind to find out. He eats seaweed and other vegetarian sweets that i give him. He likes to play and doing tricks all day.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Helzon:
    concept: Manchestershire Melancholy Mongoose
"Wee bugger's the most insidious blighter ever set foot onnis isle.."~Crabtriggin Mckugglebuckins, editor of "Behind Plexiglass Magazine"
"Manchestershire Melancholy Mongoose?!?!?!...ehh?? where...Yeeh gods!..where?!!..is it on me man??? GET IT OFF!"~Prunella Derriwinkles, contributing zoologist to "Cornered and Caged Chronicle"
The misery mongoose as it is commonly known was first discovered by a lowly bobby who after sealing off the fifth suicide within a half a block area spied the mongoose carrying it's litter one by one through the pouring rain to the next flat. After many grisly experiments baiting the animal...one was finally procured. Sadly, the entire team investigating the creature took too few precautions and ultimately succumbed to the Mongoose's natural ablities taking their own lives one more gruesome than the next. Eventually it was found that the mongoose produces a pheromone that is odorless to the human olfactory nerve, however, has a potently depressive effect on human brain chemistry. It was further found that the mongoose passes itself as a loving and more than jovial pet. It's curious nature and impish ways deem it a cute and cuddly friend among it's fanciers. However, at the climax of the female's pregnancy the pheromone is released gradually culminating to it's height mere hours before the birth of it's kits. The unsuspecting victim feels the psychotic urges come on gradually and in the end cannot resist them. After the act, the female dips her teats in wading pools of blood where a two way organic valve siphons the liquid in so that the first taste in the world her kits will have will be of their prey.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    MIKECORRIERO:
concept: The powers of this creature lay within its eyes. The Clown Faced Pookachu lures unsuspecting victims with a potent pheromone which it produces through its mouth. The deadly toxin subdues the victim giving them a short “high” and works as a sedative. Once the victim has been relaxed, the Pookachu works her magic. She stares deep within the victims soul with her lustrous eyes as Soothing mellow songs are hummed. As though it would seem it has only been minutes, she has sucked years from your life, draining every bit of youth and health that you posses, to provide her with ever lasting life.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    charge:
    concept: the deadly night squirt
Noxious secretions from the tiny but deadly urban nightsquirt, renders its victims helpless and blind, allowing the nightsquirt packs ,to feed at will,an excruitating death every time.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    salaryman:
    concept: Lowland Midget Aye-Aye (edible)
The Lowland Midget Aye-Aye (edible) (fig. A) is a rare delicacy indeed.
The creature's taste has been described as being somewhere between dog food and the very manna of heaven, though an entry by Pliny, records: "for verily it tastes like chicken!" (Historia Naturalis)
The piquant of the flesh is matched only by the funk of it's pelt (fig. B), which when washed and tanned is turned inside out and employed as toe mittens by the barnacle crofters on the Lowland veldt.
A word of warning though, the Lowland midget Aye-Aye must be gutted correctly (indeed Aye-Aye chefs are trained for 7 years before they can even touch a real specimen, and only then with the aid of protective trousers). The Aye-aye's Mong Bladder (fig. C) secretes a substance so dangerous it has been known to peel bark from trees at the mark of 50 yards.
Badly prepared Aye-Aye dishes result in the death of at least the consumer, his waiter, the chef and quite obviously the Aye-Aye.
On a lighter note, the bladder secretions can be boiled down and used as a cure for Trench Mouth and Sticky Finger in infants.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Matt Dixon:
    concept: The Nooni
This tiny nugget of strawberry-flavoured, squidgy huggability is also known as 'The Messenger of Death' across countless worlds that have felt her limitless evil. Quite how the little creature is able to crush civilisations, boil oceans and extinguish stars remains a mystery as all who witness her arrival are doomed to a painful end. Legend suggests it has something to do with that dimple in her belly...aaaaAAAA-AAARGHTTHHppt.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    leckronium:
    concept: The Northern Tri-tailed Elooch
In the year 2150 mankind has almost perfected genetic engineering. The Northern Tri-tailed Elooch was engineered to be the perfect house pet. With the long ears, fluffy fur coat, three bushy tails, and a pair of innocent eyes, the elooch would bring joy to anyones heart on a cold winter night.
What engineers never planned on was the elooch killing thousands of pet owners every winter. The electric charge that builds up from the elooch and it's long fur coat is enough to instantly kill anyone who approaches it looking for someone to snuggle with. Since these outbreaks began the government has placed strict regulations on owning an elooch. However, leave it to the engineers to turn a catastrophic situation into a resourceful one. Engineers have developed a way of using the pet's power producing abilities by developing a wheel that the overly energetic elooch can run in. This carpeted wheel, much like a hamster's wheel, collects the static charge and redirects it throughout the home powering lights and other electrical appliances. This efficiency has infuriated the power companies who have since taken over the breeding rights of the elooch. The government has also jumped in creating the elooch tax as well. But in the end, the elooch survives and everyone is again able to enjoy the love and companionship of the perfectly engineered house pet.

    Bretton:
concept: The Little White Whale is as cute as it is hungry. Only as big as a regular freshwater bass this is the smallest whale currently discovered. With an eyeball that makes up about a fourth of it's total length it is quite an adorable little whale. However it is as hungry as it is cute and would not hesitate to eat anyone ignorant enough to try and pet it.

    Stokes:
    concept: The BlibberBite
Since the early 80's scientists have been keeping a close eye on the elusive BlibberBites. BlibberBites usually try and inhabit an attractive human host in hopes that they will be able to lure other humans closer so that the can feast on them. It has also been noted that BlibberBites have very bad taste when it comes to finding an attractive host. This shortcoming often times ruins their whole strategy. Because of this there have been fewer and fewer BlibberBite sightings as of late.

    Fozzybar:
    concept: Plutoniumis Boomus
Secret agencies of many many countries tried to abuse the enormously dangerous power of this little creature...it looks very harmless and cute, but inside of this freak of nature there is one of the biggest threads for life at all...
The body is highly radioactive and absolutely sensitive, that's why it's protected by a surrounding carapace...one incautious move and the creature explodes in a nuclear blast...that's why no military power ever succeeded to use the power of this creature...they now live on a secret island somewhere in the pacific, insulated by the US-Army, rumors are afloat that the government still tries to abuse the creature for military purposes, but experts assure that this would be suicide and there is nothing true about that...
However it's strange, that this creature itself is absolutely peacable and anxious to live in harmony with its environment...unfortunately nearly every creature getting in contact with the Plutoniumis is dying after a short period...
    cute but deadly...

    strych9ine:
    concept: The Becoming
With the voice like a lullaby and the face of an angel, you'd could hardly believe on description alone that this rare abomination has ended every life that has had the unfortunate luck to happen upon it. The Becoming is a hideous creature, for sure, but you would never know it in it's presence. From it's sickly mass of tentacles and mangled flesh it produces a face and voice so entrancing that it's victim is emersed in a vision of beauty unlike no other it's seen before. Once the song begins, the face of an angel is the last thing the victim will see. Which is good, because the next three hours that it takes for The Becoming to slowly rend and digest him is a hideous sight.
And it just happens to shit Easter Eggs, something that would have been helpful for me to know last week.

    GomenNasai:
concept: The common furry woodlouse habitat covers almost 50% of our planet, with 2,623 subspecies like the legendary hraldic tiger and the edible big pink. It measures 1.5 to 2 ft. from end to end.
The woodlouse feeding habit predates on our hughug instinct, by purring and looking at us reproachfully with its wet eyes. Even knowing that it is lethal, once one look into its eyes, the hughug response takes place, and the victim take it on its breast. The woodlouse then use its claws to maintain its prey, and dig its teeth in the victim's breast, without once loosing its cute expression, and start feeding. The victim dies about one hour after the first look, emptied of its fluids.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    JeffZNY:
concept: The Tooth-tail Tamarin represents a bizarre evolutionary tangent. The primate's skull lacks a jaw and the creature instead ingests food through a mouth located in its tail. Do not be fooled by the Tooth-tail's giant adorable eyes; it is a vicious predator and a master of deception, luring its prety with its cute and cudly appearance before striking out with its fanged jaws.

    Xpose:
concept: Through out time Horses have been used as transportation. Well Evolution has benefited a speacial breed, the Virefist pony. With a fierce temper and meat filled diet this creature is a force not to be tested. "Hey mom I wanna ride the little pink pony"... yea that's what was said right before the Virefist pony bit off her little head....

    BlkCelebration:
    concept: Ka-ninoh
Not necessarily cute by earth standards, the Ka-ninoh originates from the dark planet and is the pet of choice for young dark world inhabitants (also known as "darklings").
This little fellow uses the light atop its head to light the darklings' path as they search for eggs in their anual "egg hunt."
While they appear harmless, their vicious nature comes out when their owners are threatened by the Gü-Evoh (COW #008 ). Many darklings survive the egg hunt with the help of their trusty and deadly Ka-ninohs.

    Sinix:
concept: The Japanese man-eating hexapus. A curious looking beach dwelling creature, the japanese hexapus is known to immitate the look of an innocent child's doll. But it is far from innocent, as any unknowing child who gets to close will quickly find out as they are snatched by one of the creature's 6 tentacles and quickly pulled into it's trapdoor mouth. The small human victims are usually still alive as they are slowly dissolved in the creature's round and decoy-like stomach. A most agonizing death. It's estimated over 2,000 children die each year to these strange and rare creatures.
(notice the little hand prodding at the inside of the decoy eye, bwahaha)

    Shamagim:
    concept: Bladewing cat
This medium sized feline lives in extremely cold emviroments, for that reason he must eat around 6 to 7 ponds of meat and blubber every day. His digestive system burns calorys rapidly to keep the body warm enought, witout keeping any body fat.
He is one of the moust succesfull predators in the ridge, capable to even hunt the biggest prays, and defend himself from other predators 3 times bigger than himself. This is because he haves one extra set of lims, in wish theres one falange that became extremly hard and edgy, like a blade.....but, this "blade" rotational capabilitys is limited to a 120º swing abobe his head starting from the back, so he doest use it to strike directly ( unless he start rolling toward his enemy), instead he jumps to his pray´s neck, and stabs him with his blades from the bottom, to pierce the main veins while he uses his teeths to cut trought the spine.....

    0kelvin:
    concept: Majestic Foxbear
The Majestic Foxbear is about the size of the average housecat and is a close cousin to both both bears and dogs. When the Foxbear was first discovered the first thing biologists noted was its extremely fire retardant hide. Scientists struggled to figure out why it would develop such an odd characteristic, until one day Dr. Amos Griftenson, noted biologist and asshole, made a particularly nasty comment towards the creature. The scientists were amazed to see the creature's feelings seemed to be hurt. It began to cry and the pieces of the puzzle quickly came together. The Foxbear's tears consisted largely of ethylene glycol dinitrate, a substance over 160 times as volatile as nitroglycerin. The resulting explosion wiped out over 2 and half million dollars in equipment, roughly 40 other rare species housed in the same lab and the entire team of scientists. The Majestic Foxbear was relatively unharmed.

concept: The adorable Gas Mite or is it Might!?
Enter the Gas Mite. A creature so adorably cute and yet unequivocably deadly. Allow me a chance to explain: this furry fiend stands approximately 1 foot in height and 2 feet in length with lush long hair, a button tail, a cute as a button heart-shaped nose, and what appear to be pleading puppy-dog eyes, but don't let this fool you. That tail - well, that's its noise maker - when it shakes a whimper sound comes from it to draw prey closer. And those eyes are just surface markings evolved out of necessity to further lure its prey. As the prey stoops down to pet this cuddly wuddly creature, the Gas Mite reaches upward as if needing your love, but it wants so much more. That cute, heart-shaped nose is really a tube opening that expels a silent but deadly gas reaching upwards of 6 feet. This gas is a serious olfactory assault rendering the victim with no motor capability thereby falling to the ground, helpless. The Gas Mite is then able to slither on top of the immobile victim and consume alive. Guess it should be called a Gas Might -because dey be cute but DAMN dey be deadly stinkee!

    Negrotuerto:
concept: The earth-grasshopper is one of the worst predators in the deserts of south america. Most of them come from eggs produced by the adult female every eight years. Only two eggs from almost forty five live for bring new eart-grasshopper to Chaco, a small province in Argentina. Since water is so scarce, most desert animals get their water from others animals (their food) they eat, but not the earth-grasshopper; this kind of creature obtain its water provision from human childs due their fragile structure and lack of resistance.
The earth-grasshopper has a "tricky ending" tail wich uses for haunting purpose hidding the rest of his body in dark structures such as underground galleries. This creature can wait for its prey even for three days without moving at all.
The earth-grasshopper paralize its prey with a scary scream coming from the sweet little creature atached on his tail. The scare is so strong that paralize the entire muscles of its prey for about seven hours while the earth-grasshopper slowly eliminate the skin of its paralized prey until it reaches the muscles.
This creature has almost eliminated the young chaco poblation leaving abandoned old mens and womens.

concept: with most of it's body underground the giant angler snail choose a plot usually close to small burrowing animals, not so it can eat the little creatures themselves but rather their predators, using it's fair approximation of the local wildlife it sets up shop and waits for it's prey.

    Gloklund:
    concept: The Gren Shite Wodum
The Gren Shite Wodum is an amazing mutation of a species of dung eating wodum. This cuddly little creature will feast on the waste of nearly any creature that defecates. Gorging itself on the toxic turds, the cute and loveable wodum becomes so lethal and deadly from ingesting the foul feces, no one in their right mind would bother touching it. Less seals their fate.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Sapphire:
    concept: The Common Kiffit
Kiffits have long since been domesticated, kept as a popular pet for apartments and households with young children. The fur of the domestic version is often much brighter and more varied in terms of color and pattern than its wilder cousins. Otherwise harmless, the kiffits, wild or domestic, have an instinctive attraction to bright lights, and will heedlessly dart into the path of an oncoming vehicle, especially at night when they are most active (or have gotten loose from their homes). Drivers are frequently thrown into devastating accidents because of trying to dodge these sweet little critters who are just stupid enough to throw themselves right in the way. Frequently aired on TV are ads warning the public to simply run over a kiffit if it does this, but this is easier said than done when you see the little guy in your headlights.
Kiffits, thousands of years ago, had eight, fully functional legs. As they have evolved throughout the centuries, however, the back six have shriveled and become only small, vestigial remnants. Breeders have long since tried to fully reduce the leglets, and sometimes in show animals, these are simply cut off. Its feelers and large eyes make it an exeptional hunter in the dark.

    concept: Bok-bok
The Bok-bok Bird may look fuzzy and sweet but it can turn into a psychotic killer if you ruffle its feathers the wrong way. Like its cousin, the Bakulaw Bird, the Bok-bok is very anti-social and just wants to be left alone. But silly humans fall for pretty colors quite easily and find themselves wanting to cuddle the feathered spitfire. Add to that the rare flower that only grows on top of its fungi-encrusted scalp, and it becomes completely irresistable. Many have tried to get up-close and personal with the Bok-bok only to be shredded to bits by its 4-foot long bony claws.

    concept: The Stinky Baby Eater
This critter lives in the jungle. It feeds on diffrent baby animals, but prefer the human child. It's cute and colorful just to attract children and scare off grown ups. When it has lured a child close to it, it will release a deadly gas. The gas is released from the rectum of the critter. The child will die instantly and the critter will carry the deadchild to it's nest and feed off of it for several weeks.

concept: The Over-ended Crooner from the Plane of Limbo
In the everchanging soup of Limbo there are few pockets of good hard earth. But, where there are, you might find the loveable Over-ended Crooner. Carrying for miles, many travelers have followed the deep, sweet sound of these crooners to a safe chunk of rock amongst the chaos of Limbo. Unfortunately, many travellers mistake the melodic business-end for an affectionate muzzle. The creatures are quick to cuddle, and they mean well, but sadly their deadly back end breath is too much for even the sturdiest of souls.

    concept: Georgio Belefonte
This poor little fella is a by-product of early Viagra animal testing. After being nutered at birth scientists were curious if their wonder drug would be able to re invigorate this once flaccid excuse for a pet. The experiment worked wonders on the little guy’s sex charm and Georgio was back in business. Some say he once dry humped 2,354 legs in a single month. Sadly though, after years of continuos dry humping he rubbed off his reproductive organs. Now the frustrated Georgio has a bad habit of eating his legs owner after he’s finished.
As experiment goes on, they know how dangerous Georgio itself can be, but they need more Georgios because of financial reason (Just like any bad Sci-fi movie)...long story short. A horrifying incedent worse than anyone's nightmare occured during the orgie trial of six Georgios (so-called "SixOrgieGe"). Frustration during their orgie session, they mutate into one gigantic man-eater Georgio Belefonte.

concept: The gliding skullfucker is found in heavily forested areas of asia. The sexes of the species are very different, the male is pictured and has a large penis made mostly of bone and cartilage as well as a flap of skin connecting arm to leg which allows it to glide short distances. The female is larger, fatter, with longer hair and strange genitals also made mostly of bone. When the two mate the male's member is sharpened to a razor edge between two rough spines in the female. Not having much nerve endings doesn't make for enjoyable sex, so females are mostly disinterested. The males however have a very high sex drive and spring time confusion can lead to fatalities in humans with particular hair styles.

    dogfood:
concept: The honor of naming a new species traditionally falls on its founder and in this case it was neo-xeno-naturalist Major Tarquin "Stubby" Gustavus after his surprise discovery of the Dun Pet Th'fuckin' Bunnay, while setting up camp on Festus IV. A trapper, the creature waits for unsuspecting predators to mark an apparently easy meal, then snaps it's four foot diameter talons into the startled foe and procedes to consume it. The internal organs rest in a conical shell which lay in a shallow hole, allowing the talons to rest hidden in whatever grasses are around.

    ..voted for Negrotuerto

While he's not the only one using the cute-lure approach, this one has believability. I can accept that thing as an actual creature making a real living off of suckers done in by that silly smile on the bait.

The illustration makes the concept _very_ clear and it's damn professional looking.

    Great work everyone!

It was a tie between xia and Negrotuerto.. but my vote goes to Negrotuerto, since i prefer his rendering, and his creatures "cute" side was the cutest.

    Nice work everyone!

I voted Negrotuerto, it's obvious alot of thought and process went into this. It nails the theme and manages to be completely kick-ass. It was incredibly hard to come up w/ a creature that fit the "cute" bill that wasn't sickening sweet and cartoony, because those are some of the easiest ways to make something cute. I drove myself crazy trying to find that happy-medium and Negrotuerto pulled it off.

I also love the 2 expressions on the cute bit's face

    i voted for negrotuerto.

a very cool illustration and a great concept.

i also liked fozzy's and redehlert's, but they didn't grab me as much as the earth grasshopper (no pun intended).

i really liked salaryman's and prometheus', but the deadly side of them just didn't come through in the pictures. for me, i want to see "cute" and "deadly", rather than "cute" in the picture, and "deadly" in the description.

Hey dog. . . . did you see the size of that chicken?!

Geez....tough call folks. So many that I like - why can't I vote 10 times?!?
Hemming and hawing aside, I warminlgy embraced Matt Dixon's concept. It's cute and the story gives me the deadly. Rendering is simple and in my humble opinion - just the right amount. Bravo Matt, you slay!
Other entries that made it into my final grouping include:
Fozzybar - damn cute face there, mate! Good story too - enjoyed the posture, lighting and the ladybug on the finger. Constantly kickin' A!
Sinix - that's one sweet concept/layout/copy you have there! So simple, much like Matt's, but darker and visually sinister. You were my runner up - what would have won your's over for me would be some juicy highlights that dolls tend to have.
Negrotuerto - hot damn! That's a spicy meat-a-ball you got there. Great creature and concept copy. Layout was pleasing and your rendering was fab - definitely impressed with pretty much everything there.
Aberrant - I thought this was one cute critter and the story line made me laugh. Would've been cool to see that razor sharp boner (literally) and some color shifts in the fur due to how the light was hitting it, but the anatomy seems perfectly legitimate in my book!

A big congrats to everyone who completed a concept - I think this is the biggest turnout I've been a part of thus far, and it seems that the individuals who have been consistent with these COW patties are getting better and better with their poop. Kick butt!
    Cheers!

I had to vote for Negrotuerto this time, the rendering and concept just had me at first view. Nice entry dude!

Mista Dixon, you've proved your skill yet again... your use of color blows me away everytime. JoBeSu, Salaryman, MIKECORRIERO, Stokes, Fozzybar, Prom, and many more of you talented bastards deserve some commendation too. Great entries guys, let's keep this huge momentum going on these COWs. Let me get a hoo hah two times Tuesday...

Thanks NegroTuerto! I probably don't deserve it

I excluded the "lure" beasts, since I thought it was too easy to split the problem, and because of the COW#2 winner

I exluded Prom because there's no concept (but I relished every letter of your colour tut, even If I'm not quite able to apply it to my ... stuff)

Anyway, I voted for redehlert this week. My comments :
the plus side : I like the fur rendering, the idea of fake eyes, the texture the underside. I like the way you managed to show both sides of your beast
    in one picture (unlike myself).

the minus side : I don't know why, but I have my attention diverted by the shadow under your beast... some lighting problem? also, I would have liked to see some dangling feet (am I making sense?)

    other pics/concepts that attracted me:

Matt Dixon ( almost out of habit ) I like the obviously cute aspect of your creature, your palette, and your rendering, but I think that the "inflated"-looking wings, should either be integrated in your concept (maybe the whole baby looking thing is an inflatable appendice?) or rendered differently. The tentacle should blend in the head a bit more, I think.

NegroTuerto : You rendering is and the design of the beast is perfect. What I didn't like then? the "COW#2" concept. and the lure is "funny", but not "cute" (IMO)

It was a very tough subject, this week, and It's the kind of subject that makes me wanting a "NONE" option in the poll...

i voted xia,bc the story and rendering is just perfect.the way they look reminds me of gremlins and it's just so damn funny.
2nd place-sinix,bc of the simple figure and sinister backstory.yeah some highlights could have done the final kick, but the face reminds me of brom's figures, which is an extremely good thing.

As boring and simple the topic seemed to be, it was one of the toughest to convert it into a solid conceptart...many of the entries failed to show the aspect of cuteness and deadliness in one image...whether the creature looked cute OR deadly...

    I voted for GomenNasia
His creature really looks cute, i want to hug it and play with it...then again it's deadly side is implemented nicely and designed with thought...it fits in the concept of a creature which "hunts" for its victims counting on his cuteness...i wished you invested a little more time on the finalizing, like thinner and more realistic fur and some light effects on the fur...

    Negrotuerto
Your rendering skills and creature designs are fantastic!!! As i saw your entry my soul jumped in joy because of the awesome look of it and i was sure to vote for your entry...but now as i looked through the entries and resolved to judge my fav by regarding the design AND concept, i forced me not to get influenced by the beautiful look of your entry (it was hard, but i am proud that i withstood successfully )...
The idea of a cute lure was too easy and i admit that my first sketches got the same concept...besides Matt Dixon's winning entry of the 2nd C.O.W. round had the same concept (though you maybe didn't know, because of entering C.O.W. later)...that's why i excluded every entry with a cute lure from my short list...

    strych9ine
Don't dare to post this entry on the current topic of "sirens"!!! It would fit perfectly ...funny that you wrote "And it just happens to shit Easter Eggs, something that would have been helpful for me to know last week."...i think you need to add "And it just happens to be a perfect siren, something that would have been helpful for me to know for the next week"...

    MIKECORRIERO
Very cool concept and creature design...i love it, but unfortunately you didn't manage to emphasize the cuteness factor on this creature...it would have been my choice with a cuuute face with big black shiny eyes and a sweet expression...close one!

    salaryman
Great creature design, it looks like an existing animal, but i know it's your creation! I love this kind of entries....but your concept is not a creation, it's something already existing...it's known from the pufferfish, that it's dangerous to eat them when not properly prepared...

No offense to Matt, whom I have tons of respect and admiration for...but he probably spent 15-20 minutes max on that piece and he's still blowing people's minds here...Talk about a comfort zone.

I voted for Negrotuerto because it's his debut on C.O.W. and he did so with a bang. The rendering, as everyone has mentioned, is tight, but I'm also digging the whimsical design and the wonderful use of color. Everything I've seen out of Negrotuerto so far as been pretty stellar, so I'm looking forward to seeing much more from him in the future. Welcome to the boards, man...stay long, post often!

Honorable mention goes to Salaryman. Here's another first-time C.O.W. entry that kicks my ass. The rendering is gorgeous, especially around the creature's face...and the full body pose is just adorable. I think it's kind of silly to note that the pufferfish already exists and that he's simply transferred its properties to his aye-aye...Isn't that the point of many of these entries? Incorporating the natural world into our own creative designs? If anything, you could critique that this is simply a new species of aye-aye, not an entirely imaginary creature; but I think the aye-aye and pufferfish combo is fairly inventive...so my 2 cents.

thanks! I spent too much t¡me on the underside and I kind of became blind to all other issues my pic may have had

I've still mountains to learn, starting with patience and purpose, and this place is a puff of air in my grey routine (too lyric, maybe?)

I voted for Sinix: I really love the idea and the treatment ( I can just here that big balloon stomach slapping and squeeeeeking about as the victim struggles) , good work sir!

It was a tough choice though:

BlkCelebration, your style is great! You were so close for me, but I needed to know how the little fellah was deadly!

lukavi, I love your work and I'm sorry I haven't mentioned so before: your draftmanship is some of the best I've seen on the forum! I just wanted the BokBok to be a tiny bit cuter....

    JoBeSu, yes! But no description....

leckronium, great image, but I got a wee bit lost on that description....

Yep I guess I was guilty of keeping things too conservative and real world, I will try harder this round (if I ever get out of normal map hell).....

Hey GomenNasai - many thanks for your vote! On the plus - I went through a few iterations before I got to that point - I was even thinking of using retraction thread (as used in surgery) to lift/pull tissue away to expose the underlying material - then I gave the Gas Mite an ability to stand.
Onto the minus - ack! the shadow - the one part I didn't work on - thanks for stating this - I'll be sure to consider all points next time.
In addition - the standing Gas Mite's extra psuedopod suckers -- yup, I should have included some of those - another great point!

As for all other complements - wow! I'm touched to be considered in the ranks among those you would vote for. Many thanks!
    Cheers, Dave

I voted for Matt Dixon. It managed to be both the cutest and the deadliest creature of the round. I totally love it. It oozes "Cute but Deadly" out of every pixel.

I gave everyone a comment, which is getting much harder with the number of entries we're getting now. But hey, you'd do the same for me (even though you actually didn't).

    rick_hershey
I'd say one of the big things you need to work on, if you plan on sticking with style, is line weight. Get some thicker lines and thinner lines to emphasize certain areas. The concept itself is also the obvious "lure" beast that many people went with and was already used in COW #2.

    LegacyPunk
I like the concept and the execution, while not stunning, clearly communicates the idea. You didn't do anything wrong, it just doesn't really stand out enough. The competition is tough and your concept really has to hoot and holler for attention.

    vaughany_boy
I like the concept, how you made the adorable creature kind of tragic. The rendering could use a lot of work, though. He looks very flat, both in his pose and the shading. He looks like he's been run over by a steamroller. Think a lot more about your light source and how it affects the forms of the creature when shading. Also, I think you should probably spend a little more time polishing, you submitted it pretty early and had a lot of extra time to improve the picture.

    Prometheus
I love the hell out of this. It clearly speaks for itself and I think any description would only serve to hurt it. Lazy but hilarious.

    Bennett
This doesn't seem to have a lot of thought behind it. The face isn't bad, and the scorpion tail illustrates the deadliness nicely, but otherwise it seems like a bunch of random shapes just kind of jumbled together. I like the nipple ring, though.

    Prehistoric
I'm not real fond of the guy in front, but the two little guys behind him are awesome. Totally full of character. It's something you don't seem much in COWs, having multiple creatures with distinct personalities, and I really like that. Being a pencil piece in a sea of coloured images is going to hurt it in the end, though.

    Uziel
I think the biggest weakness to this piece is the drop shadow. It completely flattens the image. I like the concept, though, and he's quite cute.

    Helzon
You're really improving a ton each week. You've still got a bit of a tendency to overdo the contrast in the backgrounds and draw some focus away from the creature, though. Great idea, and a really gross picture to go along with it.

    MIKECORRIERO
I can't decide whether I liked your original concept or this one better. This one is definitely better in the execution, and has some really cool ideas behind it, but the first one had a certain charm to it as well. Great concept on this one. It's not very cute, though.

    charge
I like the creature design, and the idea behind it, but I think you should've spent more time and finished the picture. It looks like it's still in the sketch stage.

    salaryman
Awesome! I love the creature. He's so expressive and believable! I really have no crits to offer. I really like the ones where people came up with a concept where the creature was deadly without making them a predator.

    leckronium
I really like it! It's adorable, and the concept is great. I'd have liked to see a bit more of the creature, though. The way the picture is composed it's a little hard to tell it has three tails at all.

    Bretton
    Style-wise, it's downright awesome. Creature-wise, well... it's really just a cartoony whale.

    Stokes
Cool idea, and nicely executed, but there's really nothing cute about it. Sure it has the potential to be cute, but the cuteness should really be illustrated in the picture.

    Fozzybar
Awesome. I totally love this. A giant nuclear baby, set to explode at any time. I'd love to see this in a game, you could build some great gameplay around him.

    strych9ine
Well, maybe getting a little too literal but this seems more along the lines of "Beautiful but Deadly" (and even more along the lines of Siren!). I don't know if I'll ever see the day I'm tired of tentacles and vaginal mouths.

    GomenNasai
Not particularly original in concept (obviously you came up with them independantly, but yours and redehlert's are very similar), but well handled. Good design, I like the cute on one side, gross on the other side aspect to him.

    JeffZNY
Cool, you're definitely improving with each week. I think some areas could use a little more detail and polish, but overall it's a solid entry.

    Xpose
Well, there isn't much to the concept. I think next round you should spend some more time, both on the idea and the drawing.

    BlkCelebration
I totally love the style of this one. Very, very cool. I like when people tie their COWs into previous entries as well so you get two thumbs up from me.

    Sinix
Awesome! I wish the handprint on the "eye" was a little more obvious because I probably wouldn't have picked it out if you hadn't mentioned it. It's a great detail, though.

    Shamagin
The concept and design are pretty strong. It's obvious from looking at him that he lives in a cold environment, and he's both cute and deadly. I think a lot of the details are still a bit fuzzy and could use some sharpening up in certain areas. Also, the pure black background doesn't do much for the picture.

    JoBeSu
Probably your weakest entry so far (but it's still miles ahead of the pack). It doesn't look particularly cute or deadly (quite funny, though), and no description to explain it. You're still one of my favourite COWers, though!

    0kelvin
    Drop the chalupa!

    redehlert
These ones are the hardest to crit. There's nothing particularly wrong with them, they just aren't enough to stick out in the crowd. It needs an attention grabber of some sort.

    Negrotuerto
I have very mixed feelings toward this entry. On one hand, it's stunningly well done. A great design and incredible rendering. On the other hand, it's that same cliche "lure" concept, and one of the ideas behind the COW is originality. At this point you're a shoe-in for winner, and as far as the art goes, it's well deserved. I hope next time you're able to get a really original idea behind the awesome art and then you’d totally blow me away.

    young_paddy1
Once again, the "lure" concept. And it's really hard to judge a creature design when we don't actually get to see most of it.

    Gloklund
Very funny and creepy looking. It feels like there was a little too much white used on the creature, though.

    Sapphire
I love this! I really like how one of the things that makes them cute, their eager enthusiasm and simple-mindedness, is the same thing that makes them deadly. I can just see these things bounding excitedly into the street, tails wagging, greeting the headlights like a dog would greet his owner. I also like the vestigial leg detail. It's just a little thing that makes it seem more real. Besides the crits in your sketchbook, I think you have a perspective issue with the feet. The foot on his far side looks nearer than the foot on the side nearest to us.

    lukavi
I love your style, it's very distinctive. I wouldn't particularly call the bird cute though. I like the flower on its head.

    al-x
It's definitely cute! One of the problems with it is the difference in rendering between the hair and the skin. They look like two separate elements pasted together (especially the belly, but not so much in the face). The hair is rendered sharp and scribbly, while the skin is rendered soft and fuzzy. If you had used the wrinkly texture of his face over all the skin I think it would’ve looked much better.

    Craig Houghton
Funny, another creature that is actually better suited to the next week’s COW. I like that you didn’t give your creature a conventional setting. Putting them in Limbo could really let you get away with some crazy designs. The creature is a little hard to make out at first, though.

    xia
Awesome design and killer artwork. I think the problem here is that in its cute form, it's not deadly, and in its deadly form, it's no longer cute. But I still have to give you total respect for a great job.

    Aberrant
Your description says he has a large penis made of bone and cartilage, but I don't see one! Otherwise real cool and well done, but when you describe a feature as odd and distinguishing as that, it better be in the picture!

    dogfood
LURE! Not only a lure, but the second rabbit shaped lure this week! Besides that, I do like the unique design of the concept, with the creepy trapping talons. You know, the rabbit thing might not have been a great idea because as soon as you include a rabbit, you draw comparison with the king of Cute but Deadly, the infamous Holy Grail bunny.

Nice work on the crits, 0kelvin. Man, those multi-image crits are killer. I especially appreciate the one for me. While I don't think the rendering was all that good, I thought the concept wasn't too bad (not being the dangly lure, attached only by a thin bit of flesh), but didn't even think about the Vorpal Rabbit. It's the danger of a simple mind, I guess. But, man... You go to pick up the rabbit and six claws whip out of the grass, lodging in your chest, slowly, inexorably pulling you down, then you look down and the rabbit opens up along the spine, revealing rows of nasty sharp teeth and a bloody, hungry maw... It certainly freaked my wife out.

Maybe I should have used a marmoset... a GRIZZLY MARMOSET!

Thank you SO much, 0kelvin, I was beginning to think not a single person would mention my entry at all. You were nice enough to give me two crits, and that means a lot. Your efforts aren't wasted.

Lookin' out for my peeps - Seattle entry crits

Heya, I could spend a long time givin' crits to all ya'll, but this time I'm going to hit up my posse. Major thumbs up to all ya'll for the effort and time with your concept copy and creature.

Prehistoric First - lovin' the injection of the local Seattle based sites (needle, belltown) - diggin' that action. The meeplers are almost what I'd expect to see if the local street urchins were to meld/merge with all of the pets they seem to accumulate.
They look cute and somewhat deadly, but I really think both aspects could have been pushed further. I remembered seein' these critters from our last Saturday sketch jam and would have loved to have seen more development from there regarding action/poses/dynamic fur flying scenario - I want to see these guys in action rather than being posers. As for the rendering - I'm totally cool with it pencil (wish I saw more of that 'natural' rendering), but what I'd like to see if more dynamic lighting and rendering pushing the lights and darks to create a more 3D creature(s). Sound like a plan?

Stokes Great rendering, lighting and pose! But, and there is always a but, where's the cute and where's the deadly? This guy should be in a MIB movie...definitely fits in there. So, what's my crit? Hmmm...the concept copy is funny, and I see it working for this creature, but again, I just don't see either the cute or the deadly as it applies to this particular COW.

Sapphire Quite the interesting critter you have there! So friendly and innocent - hate to wipe them off my bumper, so I'd swerve and end up dead - heck, that might even be their game plan cuz then they could come over and chow down on my splattered carnage. Your background critter with the luminous eyes is more appealing to me than the foreground because it is in action - I'd love to see you apply that pose with the coloring you have on your foreground creature. I know you're pushing for a dynamic shadow due to the headlight-like lighting, but I'm just not getting it. Maybe it's the harsh black background that is foreshortening the overall depth of the piece, or maybe I'm just unable to put a finger on it...perhaps do a google search in the images section for 'deer in headlights' and see what the lighting looks like as well as the shadowing. The only other thing is that I'm having a bit of difficulty picking up on the anatomy of this creature - most notably in the legs. The muscles and tendons should direct the action of those sturdy limbs, but they aren't coming through to me. Surprisingly enough, they do in the smaller distant version of your creature. Just thinkin'/writin' aloud. Last, I think the foreground creature's eyes would have the same effect as the other one. The 'tapetum lucidum' is the choroid material animals have (e.g. cow, deer, cats, dogs, etc) and it is this tissue that gives them the glowing eyes. Do a google search using this phrase in the image section and have fun! I'd love to see an update of this guy in your sketchbook.

Xia Now that's an interesting creature (I agree with Uziel with the look-alike to Lilo and Stich to a certain extent, but then it goes off on its own and I like that!)....if I was a Viagra puppet and I rubbed off my wang, I'd be one pissed off puppy! Your concept copy was most hysterical - great name, btw. The fact that you didn't render everything and that you stayed loose is a plus for you. The conglomerate really looks pissed off, there's no doubt there and the color choices work for this guy. Lighting is a bit wonky in the conglomerate - it's awesome in the top mouth and in the arm/hand, but in other areas of detail, the shape flattens out a bit and doesn't push depth as I think it could. I'm not even going to ask what the pacifier is all about - did you just see that Disney movie or somethin'?

I thought there were more from Seattle, but I guess I'm wrong there, aside from my own entry and this time I'm going to ask my Seattle peeps to do me the flavor and give me the 411 on their thoughts.

OKelvin - thanks for the crit, I think. You say 'them' and 'those' but in essence I have only one image - sure you got my creature? If so, what, in your eyes, would be that attention grabber? I'm all ears to receive your thoughts, bud.

    Cheers!
    D
