    Illustration Activity - (New Activity-Month Long-join before Dec. 7th)

The Deal: Every week I'll post a different art brief, every couple of weeks we'll have a guest AD. Some briefs are more detailed then others, but enough information is given to complete an assignment, and sometimes more then an Art Director will give you. Each brief will be as different as possible, so you get to cover a wide variety of subjects and learn what it is to be a working illustrator.

This is a learning activity, but hopefully fun for everyone. Please respect that and try and finish activities you commit to joining. We expect to see your best work and these activities should be viewed as real world jobs, thanks - and good luck.

It sounds fun and seems to be a good practice. Out of curiosity, how do you assign art directors?
I'm thinking about trying it out, but first I have to figure out my schedule for the rest of this week.

well we don't actually assign art directors, I sort of "play" art director. . .the activity really just gives an idea of what art directors expect and how they might interact with artists. Mainly to give an idea of how the whole thing can play out.

Sounds like fun, futuristic, gladiators, cybernetic limbs, it can't get any better then that, well except maybe if you add in killer bunnies. Other then that, I think I'll give it a shot.

I'm pretty much new in conceptart, but I like to try something like this (working with deadlines). But I must ask can I participate from here, since I didn't in last two assignments?

    Happy Birthday expat!

DuneFish Ė this is a pretty good start. Anatomy-wise, those are really puffy arms on the villain; check out an anatomy resource for the upper arms, especially. The big swinging mustache doesnít jibe with the straight rise of the hand flames. When you start punching up the darks, make certain that they support the composition and help the eye move around, going where you want it to go. Right now, those equally spaced light sources are doing a nice job of dropping us right at the hero. The fact that he is already firing is actually reducing the tension. Heís in action, so we know what heís thinking. If he were hesitating, we might wonder if he has seen the villain behind him and is wondering where he should open up that hand cannon. Itís that crescendo that happens right before all hell breaks loose, the pre-game jitters. If you update, you can either replace this one and let me know, or post the new one and remove this one (in an effort to keep the thread less chaotic).

Danilo Ė thatís my bust; sorry about that. I guess I really didnít notice the size difference as much in the originals, but I certainly donít want you to mess with this digitally. I doubt it would come across very well, and I donít expect you to correct my mistakes. I still think itís a solid composition and design.

    Liquidspider Ė bring it!

nikotem Ė Iíll forgive you this once. The heroís hat is killing me. Lay out the line where it wraps around his head, then put in the rest. Youíll find that it eclipses most of his face. You could have it flying off, indicating more action. His head is a tad too small for his body and right hand and arm and the foreshortening of his left arm isnít working (I canít put my finger on it). The dragon is far too straight; you could add a lot of interest by having it curve around the hero and then twist up and look at the villain. I like the size and position of the villain, but the scared look on his face lessens the tension. It would be far more of a dangerous situation if he werenít afraid of this thing. Hereís our guy tracking down the evil baddie, with only this amulet able to bring about his destruction and heís not afraid of it. Oh, crapÖ

purb Ė nice sketches, but it looks like the villain is skateboarding. Skateboarding is not a crime!

aprat, the only thing that bothers me, is that you have a nice rim light showing the moon light on the hero and the dragon, but the Villian has NONE.. If I'm not mistaken, there should still be some sort of highlight on the edges of the villian to show that the same intensity of the moon shining on the hero and dragon, is happening to him as well... unless.. maybe.. hes in another time zone?

compare your hero's lighting to your villian... am i the only one?

actually, on second glance.. it looks like your moon is in between the hero and villian.... and odd spot to say the least... even if this is the case, and you keep it, there should be a little more highlights on that villian, more light should catch parts of him than just that side of his.

hey dogfood- thanks for the birthday salute, that was unexpected.
Not only is it my birthday but it's my mum *and* dad's this week so if I don't make the deadline, that's my excuse.
On the other hand I got a wacom tablet and painter for my birthday so I'm pretty happy with that, i'll try to use that for this project...

    thanks again

may not be able to meet the dateline. Haven't touched the pic since the posted sketch. Work got too hectic, 9 to 7 o'clock daily, reach home late, time to sleep.

aprat Ė I was hoping for some more work defining the shapes, but the composition is pretty solid. The hero turned out a little more static than I thought he would and his cottage cheese butt isnít doing a lot to inspire us regarding his fitness. I do like that he is definitively removed from the villain, though; very nice depth. The use of texture doesnít seem entirely believable; meaning that clouds and light sources (like the eyes), generally donít display more texture than, say, nearby ground or scaly creatures in the foreground. Overall, it could use some more work to define the shapes, but it is a pretty solid beginning. From a tension view, it looks much more like the hero is consulting an ďEndless StoryĒ oracle than confronting a really menacing character.

Hi Dune, very interesting looking character, he reminds me of a assasin from movie Leon the profesional. Cool

But it seems to me that his hand is a bit too small comapring to his head. What do you guys think?

Despite me not posting much (I've been working REAL hard), I think we should all thank Rick for taking his time to do this with us. Every so often it's good to give props where props are due. I'll try to participate more if I get a chance. Let's all give a round of woo hoo's for Rick and the time he takes to do this stuff!!!

    Woo!

    (Gratifying, isn't it?)
