Who says it's dead? Folks are just getting back from their school and post school activities. There are still folks posting here. I mean, I'm not going to be able to do this one, but it's not dead. IT'S ALIVE! ALIIIIVE!

it's been a year plus since i've touched somewhat traditional media. Using a dried/clogged up parker fountain pen as a dip pen plus one of those JP comic nibs. Shaded on a computer.

close-up at 300dpi... original was quite small on paper.

My favourite would have to be hawaiianpunch's interpretation. I like the ekspression of mad pain and and lunacy (sp?) on her face. Cool stuff from all of you, though! This activity-thing is good!

Here's mine. I've enjoyed painting her (not in any funky, fetish-y way )

    sorry.

sorry for being so impatient. i can't help it.

DuneFishUK: WOW! I really like this piece for a first-timer. Very moody. I like how the details almost emerge from the shadowy bg. Nice work. One thing is I don't see the "grandma" in it.

dCept: thanx for the props dude. after seeing yours that's a real compliment. I like the lil guy in the cage there for the perspective. Looks kinda huge for an old granny. Hope you're on for another activity.

hawaiianpunch: Thanks for the words - I see what you mean by the grandmother comment: that aspect seems to have faded a bit from the original concept...

Just scanning this thread/forum now I have a faster connection... I am really liking this place. These pictures are amazing! <tries to contain excitement>... <fails>

My first contribution on these forums, here goes.
Ran out of time so I couldn't finish the grayscale I intended to make. Instead I threw together an black and white version of my demon.

Thumbs up liking the stuff so far.

I'm glad I got in on this. It's really fun to get my creative juices flowing.

Anders89: That's really cool. I need to learn to use PS and Painter to do digital painting. You definitely got the beastly granny thing going there. I can clearly tell that's a ghastly old bitch. Nice job.

Hey Guys, I work with Rick, and he's getting his computer fixed right now. He should have a working computer sometime soon. In the meantime, he was hoping that Dogfood could run the illustration Activity in his absence. I guess that means the next assignment is his decision. Tim, abuse the power while you have it!

    I... HAVE... THE !

OK, I'm going to let Rick take care of the last one when he gets back (meaning the crits and results) and sweep right into the next exercise. For those of us in the U.S., there might be some conflict with drawing as we near the July 4th holiday, so this one is going to be extended, but with many layers.

Task: Full page ad for a game (working title: Darn that Evil, Immortal Sorceror).

The key to this one is to create a tense scene and the "client" wants to see your progress. The first stage is to create six small thumbnails, which will serve as value studies for you for the rest of the project. Indicate which you prefer and the "client" will pick one for you to continue with.

Stage Two will be a full size sketch, with the characters fleshed out and the third will be the finished, gray scale piece.

The scene: Hero has caught up with the villain and there is about to be a huge conflict, the results of which look grim for our hero. Draw the viewer in, make him want to know what's going to happen and care about the outcome (and buy the game).

Hero: Male or female (chosen in game), outfitted from any time between 1900-1950, with a small dragon companion (no more than 5 ft long, but not too small). It should be obvious the dragon is on the hero's side. Any weapons from the era are OK, but the hero will also have a magical talisman.

Villain: Chinese Black Magician; go buck-wild. He can have minions, but make certain they don't overpower the scene.

Deadline: The first two stages need to be done by Thursday, July 14. The sooner you have the first stage done and the "client" chooses the thumb to go with, the more time you'll have for the remaining two stages. The final stage will be due Thursday, July 21. (I know we were trying to make in Saturday, but July is a busy family month). I will provide crits for stages two and three.

Let me know if anyone needs more explanation.

Very nice buildup this time around... I like that it's taken in several stages, like with real commisioned piece. I'm in.

Oh boy, oh boy. I'm really hyped up on this one. I might even whip the thumbnails up today. And I'll just hope not to get discouraged along the way

One question before I do, however. Am I reading correctly that it should be the moment just before action/conflict, or does the very beginning of conflict count as well? For example, the mage charging up just before striking would be before the conflict, but the mage chugging a spell at the hero and the hero starting to fall back would be the beginning of the actual fight.

I hope it's the first, it'll be a bit harder (but the results will probably be more interesting).

This is indeed what we're looking for. It's part of an illustration theory I subscribe to, in that there is often far more tension and interest generated when the picture tells a story and leaves you wanting to know more, than just having the blody entrails caked over the sword and triumph all over the hero's face (story over, what's next?). The Brandywine artists were all over this (N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, et al).

By VALUE STUDIES do you mean possible ideas of composition for the final piece kind of thing?

Yes, the thumbnails should represent the composition of the final piece, giving an idea what the values will be (very roughly). You can use pencils, of course, but try to get 3 or 4 values.

For size, you should be able to put all of them on a 800x600 piece (300 high and about 250 wide, each).

"Yes, the thumbnails should represent the composition of the final piece, giving an idea what the values will be (very roughly). You can use pencils, of course, but try to get 3 or 4 values."

By 3 or four values, do you mean 3-4 colors/ black-white-two greys, or do you mean distinct elements? I'm assuming the former.

Please don't laugh... I'e never had an art class in my life, and I really am trying... *hangs head in shame at ignorance*
