    Hny

I always chuckle a little when I hear someone say back to basics <> cause it is all basics

I think I will do those exercises myself <> I am sure there is a great deal to learn from them

Dr. Mentler, Emeritus - Too true. So shall I say I will begin with the simplistic?

Isobel - thank you! That is one of everything that I need to work on. Unfortunately, not many oppurtunities for me to dedicate much time at once.

And now, just to prove myself wrong, I smuggled my tablet into work today, and
    played with painter's liquid ink....

    Self-serving, counter-productive lazyness? You betcha!

    Thanks, Spooky...

trying to teach myself how to paint in color....
    grrr....
WIP from photo of my daughter. I know there's a whole lot wrong with it, not the least of which that I don't seem to be using the reference. My main goal here is to get a process and follow-through. I'm not going to worry about how close it is to the ref.

I think you are hyper-focusing on the details, which are coming out nicely at this point, but are extremely misplaced. I'd suggest blocking in all major structural features a little more, checking placement the whole time before you start refining features like you've done to the nose and eye.

A few notes: The head should be rotated a few degrees CW and the eye level (perspective) is higher in the drawing than it is in the photo. I.E. it looks like you are looking at your daughter in the eyes in your painting, but in photo, the eye level is around the mouth or lower. Changing that would forshortten the cheek/mouth area in turn bringing the nose closer into the eyes like the photo.

I hope I didn't pick too much, I enjoyed looking at your SB.

Thanks, Bennet, I knew I was way off, although how way off wasn't clear until I posted the pic. I'm afraid you're right and I'm gonna have to start over.
I seriously do appreciate the crits, though... keeps my mind on what matters...

Well... good thing it's a slow day at work.

here's where my WIP stands now...

On another note, I'm very excited because I started experimenting with ink last night. I'm going to do some more with it and take some pictures... also, more studies on their way!

wow that painting definitely took a turn for the better. think you were right focussing more on the bigger picture first (or i think thats what you did). next step is to add more darks?

    thanks tensai!

    Here's another quick digital sketch...

and here's where the WIP is at... still working on it, but I didn't send the updated rif file to work. I'll make sure to do that tonight.

Got a scanner!! That means quicker turnaround from sketch to post.

Nice improvement going on in here, dig the baby (it's eyes might need to be less glassy (pale))
You also have some nice Ideas. Keep pumping those studies.

Hey man, seeing some good stuff in here, and congrats on the scanner!

I checked out your baby WIP thread, I admit I was a little worried that you were going to details too quickly (I've never been able to do that and succeed... I've seen some people manage that, but I have no idea how..) but it looks like you overcame that when you started over, so good job. Congrats on the baby too, she's a cutie. : )

lefran, silentbrain and mitch - Thanks!! My scanner sucked... I'm looking for a new one.

The best thing about painting my daughter is that I think overcame my fear of color. Here is what I'm calling finished.

I was playing with Painter's Artist's Oils at work.

Another quick Painter sketch. Originally I was trying to remember the arm study I did last night from Bridgeman, but I completely screwed the elbow and major muscle masses... not to mention the wrist... oh well, more studies tonight... will post them soon.

and a another sketch of my cubicle mate

and fixed the apple image a bit

I know the upper arm is too short...
I wanted to try out the drawing method Dr. Mentler told me about in my SOFA thread.
