"Mail Order Ninja" in Tokyopop's RSOM #5 Top20

    Hey Everybody!

Tokyopop's 5th Rising Stars of Manga competition is underway. Submissions ended Feb. 15 and now the selection process has begun. The 5th installment of RSOM is different, though. This time they are also including a People's Choice Award. Of all the submissions, the Tokyopop editors picked the top 20 finalists which will then be posted on their website for visitors to vote on. From these 20 finalists, the top 5 winners of the competition will be selected. Prizes for these winners include $$ and the opportunity to pitch a series for publication. A total of 8 stories (top 5 + 2 honorable mentions + the people's choice) will be selected to be published in an anthology and sold all over the world.

The reason I'm posting is that I shared the first 5 pages with you back in November and now the project that Josh Elder and myself created, "Mail Order Ninja", has been selected in the top 20 and the entire story is posted on their website. Josh created and wrote the script and I did all the production work (layouts, pencils, inks, greyscale, letters).

I would like to invite you to visit the Tokyopop website and vote for your favorite (preferably Mail Order Ninja )

    The voting runs 3/11 - 3/18

    http://www.tokyopop.com/news/mangatalent/decide/

    Thanks,

These are the 5 pages I shared in Nov.

HAHHAHAHA havent laughed this much in awhile (then again i think stress is taking its toll on me, with my architectural school work's submission date looming) i really like it! It has a nice style (but does not look manga) and a healthy dose of humour. I like the part where hte kid's asking for money. What i like abt this is its readable without any dialog. I imagine this to have a musical score in the background

    Roxors my boxors...

Great work, killer style (very Legend of Zelda: Windwaker) and a fun story!

My only comment on improvement might be the last page... all you saw prior was the sword stick through the box but then you dont see him cutting out a peice. Possibly change the part where the kid is backing up to the ninja cutting out an image of himself.

    Long live the ninja!

I can honestly say that yours was the best one man...I know this is a manga contest, but how come they can't do their own style. They can keep elements of manga, but they should put something new into the style instead of copying existing styles...anyways thats my rant about your competitors...your style was distinctly differnet and stood out. I liked the story very much, and I hope you win...

sweet! I dont knwo why but I think the smile at the end reminds me more of bevis and butthead... not wanting to be insulting or anything like that, but it did.

Also, like previously mentiond, it's GREATLY done without dialogue! and the best aprt about that is that it can be easilly interpreted into another language (just change the ad, and that's it).

You also make the ninja fit in well because of the lack of dialogue. A ninja really shouldnt talk much, and it might be best then -- as you did -- not ot let anyone talk.

.... and well, lets face it. I just wanna go out and order my own ninja now. see what you've done? I hope you're happy!

"And so the valley cried with anger: "mount your horses draw your swords!" and so they killed hte mountain people and they won their jsut rewards. Soon they stood beside the treasure ont he moutain dark and red, turned the stone and looked beneath it... "peace on earth" was all it said." -- One Tin Soldier

i forgot to comment on this last week... its bad ass stuff... too bad you had to turn in black and white for the contest... btw i looked at the others and yours is much cooler so i voted for ya. like egerie said once i noticed the hands i knew you had a strong knowledge base and the work shows it even in a more simplistic style. very kool stuff

    WOW!!!!

This is awesome! I just want to thank everybody for such a great response to this. I haven't replied in a while, cuz I was trying to wait until April 1st, which is when the winners are announced, but since so many of you have responded, I just had to say "Thanks!" now.

I appreciate all the comments and all the votes (for those who voted for us ).

I'll be back on April 1st to let you all know the outcome.

    Again, Thanks.

    ERICH

hey, stuff is looking cool! I just kinda panned throught the images, and it seemed like there was a lot of motion going on with the characters. One comic I would highly recomend checking out is the AKIRA series, simply for how the element of motion is so perfectly captured in them. A lot of pages are nothing but art, and Otomo really does a good job of providing a visual language through the illusion of motion.
