    Stupid question time!

    Hey all,

I've got a question. It's even a fairly stupid question.

Right now i'm working on my portfolio, both a printed version and a portfolio website a friend is helping me with. I've got pretty much everything covered in it, environments, characters, creatures, illustrations, vehicles, whatever. However, a problem, well, not really a problem, more like a minor confusion, came up when i was trying to take my pieces and arrange them in different categories. A tank goes in vehicle design, a ninja goes in character design, a castle in environment design and so on.. easy enough. But what about a troll, is that creature design or character design? I figure since it's humanoid and at least fairly intelligent it should go with the characters, but since it's also a monster it should go with the creatures... What i want to know is if there's an industry standard for this kind of stuff, what's character design and what's not?

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this but if you got some insight please let me know.

    Cheers.

    Creature....

Well unless of course your troll is not a generic troll.....

    I still say creature.

Depends on how general of the design is.

If you make the troll, just as an example of a monster, then it would go into creatures.

But if you make it more defined, give it a name, background, such forth, yeah could go into characters.

Don't worry... whatever makes you happy. As long as they are done well, that's all that matters.

    Hey,

If its an intelligent Troll, make a 'Big-Boned-Humanoid' section so not to offend....hahaha

But its a troll. They are stupid. Apparently, (as the story goes) their place of dwelling is under a bridge and they cause havoc for Billy-Goat-Gruffs who wanna cross that bridge.

I vote for the 'Creatures' section too...

    grrr

I think I'll go for a big-boned-humanoid section.. either that or creatures. Thanks for your view on it.

I'd say if you are using it for a story or if it is going to play a role in something it is a character, but other than that if its just a picture you came up with creature. Character doesn't meen just human, look at the characters in alot of fantasy stories like the elves in lord of the rings, the creatures out of lavender castle and the characters from the labyrinth. so it depends on it's role I guess. Hope this helps answer your question

According to the The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, (Copyright © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company, taken from dictionary.com), a troll is described as a "A supernatural creature", in contrast to a ""A supernatural character", which one would come to expect if the troll were to fall in the subset of "characters".

If it's a good drawing, it doesn't matter where the fug it goes. Just put your best stuff in and let it fly.

If it's got a personality, or if it's a *personalization* than it goes into the character category.

If it's a connon fodder design, then it goes into Monsters
