    Noir-ish Noh

    Hi all:

Currently testing out some stuff for a small project. As yet, nowhere near the vicinity of even thinking about finals. Just trying out some ideas.

Trying to work out a more ukiyo-e print style for the project.

    Comments warmly encouraged. :)

    Thanks for peeking in!

    Hi there,

those look great! I especially like the first one, to be more precise the samurai in the foreground which is the most dynamic!
The last one are shrunken heads, aren't they? I've read that the samurai used to cut off the heads of defeated (killed) enemies, dressed the hair and customized them and then fasten 'em to their armor.
The look of these pics is pretty cool, too!

    Keep em coming!!!!

Oh, I almost forgot: the look of the first one reminds me of these old samurai movies, you know. I don't know who was the director but there's a little reference to his films in "The Bodyguard" (K.Costner/W.Houston). Your samurais look kinda like from those b&w movies where there were arms and limbs cut off and blood just spilling all over the place. Tarantino made movies lately where he referenced to this style by making this homage called "Kill Bill"

I like the second one the most i think, very subtle and elegant.. captures the mood nicely. I also like the little hints of color you throw into your pieces.

    Thanks for chiming in folks!

KampfHase: I'm afraid I didn't do a good job with those heads since I originally wanted them to look more like noh threatre masks but it seems I've rendered them more like flesh! Ah well. This is still a "playing around" stage though.

advedjian: Thanks! Glad you are liking it. I do enjoy working loose.

Soultek: Thanks for pointing that out! I am not sure yet how much if any of all the loose zen-ness will find it's way to my finals. And, sadly, the color might go too since it's originally supposed to be a black and white deal.

Oh and, KampfHase: You're probably talking about Seven Samurai by the japanese director Akira Kurosawa. He's a big favorite of mine, and Seven Samurai is in my humble opinion one of the best films ever made. I hoping I could bring some feel of it to this project.

Here's another sketch. It's starting to look closer to the ukiyo-e feel I'm aiming for:

Thanks again, all. You're input is invaluable!
