    Cliff Hanger

    This is my latest piece.

I've called it Cliff Hanger, but it doesnt have anything to do with the Stallone movie

I've had the germ of this idea floating around my brain for about 15 years hehe. Now i've finally done it. its actually a weird kind of relief to get it out of my head.

so............... here you go, crits welcome.

done in PS7 in about 12-14 hours (total).

    Cliff Hanger

I feel like this one is a bit of a leap forward for me (see my previous work @ www.myetchings.co.uk)

    Gorgeous!

    just a few things:

    a) I'd love to see a stronger light on the main characters and FG, right now everything seems a little hazy. example, the FG snow is the exact same colour as the BG snow... whiten it up a bit and it will pull everything forward and add more dimension to the piece.

    b) The BG figures seem a little forced, not even sure if you need them. If you do I'd make them sit a little higher, maybe waist level on the attacking guy... right now they feel way too low and a little unfinished.

    c) The "Conan" figure that's hangin' needs some work on his legs (especially the back one) and his feet. They feel unfinished as compared to the other FG elements.

    d) Not sure what the girls doing but in a Frazetta-esque piece like this... yah gotta have one!

Really superior work... I love the composition, and the energy. The stone / mountain work is awesome!

    great job!

Some mighty fine work! The cliffhanger's arm and back are really well done. Do have to agree with Verithin about the background figures. Don't eliminate them, but make them a little more noticeable. And man it must suckfor the girl, being in the snow naked!

    great textures and mood.

THe dangling figure is really really stiff and his thigh/leg sticking up had the highest and largest amount of contrast. Darken that up a bit and I would also suggest trying different body positions for the character. Everything else has a nice flow, now make this a killer piece and add some life to him as well.

looks sweet. I love the guy hanging over the edge, that is so kewl. And the girl, wicked, although i bet she's freezing. The only that that was weird for me, was that the expresion on the guys face looks kinda happy or too calm to me. I think he should be snarling a bit more, like is is furious.

Barbarian affairs man. The husband just came back from a long day at the office only to find another man in his cave.

Awesome job dude, I really like the atmosphere you created here. The dude that’s hanging right now could use a new position (at least his arm with the dagger) it feels like he pulled it out of somewhere but might as well just have him in a battle ready pose.

I like the "Conan" figures pose... I really get the sense that he's holding tight to the branch with his right arm and that he's "rigid" in anticipation of the move he's gonna have to make to fend off the attacking guy...

The hanging guy legs seems to be in a really weird pose, shouldn't they be hanging down a little more?

The attackers' expression is a bit hard to read; it almost looks to me like he's running to help pull the guy up.

Mongol General: Conan, what is best in life?

Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to dangle precariously on a branch with a young Kenny Rogers bearing down on you with an axe.

I still say the big fella and the woman need to have a poist coital cigarette in their mouths. Classy.

Nah, you know I love it m'lad. Top marks. I'll still cane your arse on Pro Evo later tho.

It's really good, I like pictures that put you right in the middle of a story and you definately get that feeling here.
One thing I'd add is some snow or gravel spilling off the cliff so it looks more like Conan just slipped.
And yes axe man looks too friendly.

Telling you right now that I didnt read all the replies so there may be some repetition here:

    1. Why is there a naked woman there?

    2. The guy holding the battle axe looks more concerned than angry. From the looks of it he might be yelling "hey mister you forgot your axe, here I'll throw it to you!"

    3. Based on the realistic look of the skin and surroundings I think the cloth could use some work.

    Edit: One more thing:

Verithin I disagree about the legs, i think that the lack of detail on them pushes the focal point up towards teh situation at hand instead of having the eye look at just the one main character who has his back turned to the viwing angle and is not interesting to look at.

Otherwise composition and colors are really neat and work well together. GJ

    Cheers all!

thank you all for your kind words and cutting crit

Diesel Head ; this really is a fantasy set piece. its the classic trio of hero, maiden and monster ( or a young Kenny Rogers in this case).
the girl in this sort of image just has to be as helpless and exposed to danger as possible to highten the drama, you dont get much more exposed than when your naked

plus it felt a shame to cover her up, she looked kind of cute there in the buff

Verithin ; thanks for the crits and the props, you were critical at first but then you talked yourself round cheers for that!

its always a mixed blessing when someone pops up and makes a really enlightened crit that you never spotted

Bomba; cheers for the crit, but often this sort of thing boils down to taste and personal pref.

im pretty happy with the pose, its original (you see alot of the same poses as the years roll by) and i think it has the right tension, and implies his preparation to move in his own defence.

Sanby; yeah? ok it does look a tad vague at this rez, i'll post a crop at the original pixel aspect on monday, i think it works at that size, not to caricatured

    Ploy cube hehe.

the dagger is hidden from the aproaching figure.

    Verithin; yeah, thats exactly it

Cubik; .........with an axe? hehe, ok if you say so............

arghmisfit thanks. battle wounds you say? hmmm i didnt feel that gore would contribute to the image in any meaningful way, its a romantic pic at heart ;p

    cheers though.

Pud' shut it ya mincer oh and thanks, Berlin 1945 is the DBs you know

Massikka; your too kind..........but i like it

Gilead; cheers , yeah i tried the gravel/snow spilling off the cliff thing, but lacked the energy to make it work and had to finish that night

Nacho Grande; i'll take that as a compliment then

MeDrawUC; yep that was the idea on the legs, if you detail everything, you loose the point of focus. see Sargent, hes the master.

    Cheers again all.

    More soon......................
