    February Self Portraits

woohooo heheh my time to start the monthly SP thread (if I may, may I? )

Tried a 'softer' approach, initially laid out everything with smoothed borders (always my beloved Soft Pastel brush in Painter).. then I tried not add too much detail. This is weird, after working on this about 2h30, I look at my previous SP's and they look like my graphics card 's doing a realtime 'sharpen' filtering on everything... eeek.

I'm supposed to smile. Hell, I got a date today, I should be !

Come on people , let's get February rolling!

faB: Just had to post to write that your ear looks great really full of life.

Xen: Dude draw one where you put down a lot of time...since this quick one is good.

Nike: Don't mind getting a better photo draw another one instead

    Me!!!!

OK, this is in my sketcheroo too, but I need to post more than I do. This was done the other night in an hour or so of drawing and playing Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Not finished, but it's the general piece.

Fab: Wonderful piece, you remind me of, I just lost his name... Dave Matthews!
Xen: I just love the way it was done. The shadows... Everything! This is epic in such a small space.
Nike: Lovely color. I mean crazy good!
    End: Wow...

klinesmoker > Cool, how do you get the shading like that? smudgestick?

Xen > As a big fan of the regular pencil I salute you. very cool, but I'd like to see it finished, has something of a unfinished feel about it.

FaB > Thats FaBulous.. I know I know, bad pun. But damn good nonetheless.

The rest is good also, keep up the good work people, hut hut, keep posting!

    Here's some comments

Xen: ty, sorry, can't see yours

Nike: thank you, you've got a certain mood going on, the light source is undefined though, look at the values (light&dark) on the photo and maybe exagerate them since the photo might not be very good lighting wise to start with, use the values to give volume to your cheeks, lips, eyelids, etc.

Mindflaw: thanks, I'm glad my right ear is full of life, I like stereo sound

endregan: I think your cropping of the portrait is a bit tight, in particular the bottom tip of the v neck almost hits the bottom border, and makes the torso appear cut in two halves i.e. appear as 2 shapes instead of one. I feel overall values are nice but dont be afraid to leave 'empty' spaces, or erase like you did above the upper lip, to enhance the lighting. I n this case for example it is a bit strange that the area between upper lip and nose is lighter than the whole lit side of the face.

klinesmoker: thanks, Dave Matthews.. I guess it must be the hair :p Your sp looks tight and clean, alltough the composition is not clear, not much to say about the face with what is visible, other than when you draw/paint only parts of it, it's easy to forget the structure of the skull. Otherwise the big shoulder pad thing competes with the head, so as a finished piece I'd have let it fade away or recede.

    cheezmuffn: cant see

talmir: thank you, I see a consistency in this and the following two SP's, my suggestion would be to challenge how you see and try one without drawing contours, but patches of light and dark instead. Keeping in mind contours dont really exist, but are in fact the point where light and dark meets. Eventually you get back to contours, by noticing the edges that separate light and dark areas, but allowing them to be blurry in parts , to even disappear if you have a light side of the face and a light background for example.

arghmisfit: howdy, looks good, nice values going on with the nose, lack of pupils make the face somewhat generic though, I love Simon Bisley's work so I cant complain about the colors, except maybe play with contrast of saturation, to make features pop out or separate fg / bg.

bunthius: looks good! imho you should have suggested a little bit the shoulders, so the collar connects to something, and to make the head 'sit' on something, instead of float in the white space, even make the shirt very dark, to avoid too much white, and balance the amount of light/dark in the image. Very nice though!

timothy: I like how you've 'chiselled' the anatomy of the face, I like it overall, only crit would be that the texture going on in the background doesnt fit with the rest of the treatment I would have imagined the background in the same treatment as your shirt, maybe with a motif and a little colour, or just a plain slightly coloured background

Ni*: howdy, are you using Photoshop? I have very little experience with digitial painting in photoshop so I couldnt say much if thats the case, I think the eyes looks good, colour scheme's alright, maybe you should try force yourself to work in steps. keep details and sharp lines for a later stage, leave the undefined areas more blurry and add details in select places for example in this case the separation of the hairline could be blurry, somehow to leave it to imagination.. but when it's sharp, the eye just sticks to it and it looks like you';ve got a sharp hairline.. hope that makes sense :p

timothy: looks consistent, I know it's monochromatic but how about adding with very low opacity, little touches of a second colour to give it some spice, and play with the focus. I like the rectangular cropping

thanks for the crits fab, your totally right about the saturation, i have problems with that sometimes, althought i still like my picture, the thing is with my tria ink ther all highly saturated, next time i use them on the background illl try mixing the overall color with a tad of it complement. yours looks really good, from what i remember about your past work that ive seen, they all look pastelly, maybe try experimenting with painters wide range of brushes, cant wait to see ur next one

ill prolly post my next sp this weekend, it will have more generic eyes

ion thos are pretty crazy man, me like. the middle one, it could use more values on the bandana inorder to pop the structure of the nose and eye sockets more (someone correct me if im wrong), u can only faintly see the structure now. the first one is dope it has an exray feel to it

meanwhile: heres a quicky one i did about a couple months ago

Some of you are really starting to resemble Andrew Jones.

But believe me, I understand. Haha.

Carry on, gentlemen. I may have something soon, myself.
