    COW #343: Alien Racing Steed

    Brief:
I hope people enjoyed our Anniversary topic! Setting ourselves up at the starting line for the next topic we're going to be looking into a very popular sport amoung us humans, Racing! We have tamed a few creatures for racing such as horses, camels, and even elephants. For this topic however we're taking things literally out of this world. You are going to be designing an alien racing steed. The jockeys may or may not be human, that is totally up to you. Though you don't necessarily need to include them your final entries, as long as the steed is clearly shown. On your marks! Get set! PAINT!!

    Round Requirements:
-it is a mounted creature used for sport racing
    -is an alien creature
    -minimal accessories are allowed
-Optional: you may include the jockey if you want, but it is not required

    Deadline:
Saturday February 14, 11:59:59 PM EST (GMT -4)

This thread is the WIPs Thread, meant for uploading any wips, sketches, and ideas for your creature's concepts, as well as any crits, comments, reference images, and discussions relating to the topic! Please submit your final entries to the Finals Thread which can be found here, otherwise your entry will not be included into the poll:

If you have any ideas for a future topic for Creature of the Week you are free to add your own ideas and suggestions to the Topic Suggestion Thread!

If your looking for a little inspiration for your designs, we have a good Site Reference Thread available!

First, I thought of all the beautiful and graceful runners on Earth for my inspiration, like cheetahs, greyhounds, and horses. Then, I threw all that out the window and went with the most awkward runners, penguins. I'd much prefer to watch someone attempting to ride a giant penguin monster, wobbling down the stretch. I definitely have a lot of refining to do on this design before I submit, but I'd thought I'd get the idea out there.

I decided to take things off land entirely, making my entry a sea racer. Its look is inspired by a combination of eels, zebrafish, seahorses and axolotl.
So far it's mainly just the head and crest:

Wow, great minds think alike! I was working along aquatic lines too, imagining a highly intelligent creature that uses jet propulsion to skim the surface at high speed. I think the major challenge with the idea would be to make it look like a living being rather than a piece of technology, I'd have to play with color and texture.

    All the following provided inspiration:
    1. Dolphin
    2. Squid
    3. Manta ray
    4. 1950s-vintage US Navy "Regulus II" missile

alembic2: nice job so far, no complaints from me when it comes to it being an organic living creature...flying squids comes to mind when I see this, nifty little critters those

mbendele: some very neat silhouettes so far, were these done on alchemy? anyways...the tusked creature on the bottom left is catching my attention for some reason, though it doesn't really seem fit as a racer but then again any creature could be used for racing...I mean we humans managed to have frikkin slugs and snails race each other for pete's sakes lol.... I'm also quite keen on numbers 1, 3 and 5 as well on the other image

here's a sketch so far...not sure if I should add a bridle or not...may try sketching another creature or two...

Abelo: It's great to see how you start with the color on these.

    Rob Powell
: Thanks! These were done with Krita. The two main brushes used were the Special_particles_crazy (gesture) and Shape_fill (darken and refine). Shape_fill is like a self-filling lasso tool, the other is just..difficult to control. Numbers 3 and 4 are 100% crazy brush. I think I'll have to take a few of these to the next stage before settling on one.

If you don't like the idea of a full bridle, maybe you could experiment with having the reins attached to rings like with a bull. Maybe on the sides of the head rather than the nose. Could even be partially ornamental, like a lady with piercings all the way along her ears. I really like the base structure you have with this one--especially the hind legs. I would say my least favorite part is the tail. I can't say exactly why. It's not bad, but it is a little difficult for me to tell what's going on with it. Or maybe something about the shape seems less than ideal or not a good match for the rest of the creature. The spur on the bottom and the feather thing on top are the main offenders it seems. It may be possible to just tweak those. Then again, what do I know. It's just an opinion. Another great start!

    Sweet looking ideas everyone.
    -Mike

@mbendle those tumbnails look great! number 3 is my favourite, its an interesting design and looks like it could go really fast.

I wanted to do a flying thing, thinking of pterodactyls. i need to figure out what the saddle looks like still.

Still at my "flying whale," which is looking more like an animal at this point; I'm thinking that the race is more like a rodeo in that half the excitement is seeing who can stay mounted as they skim across the course.

Throwing my hat into the ring again. Trying something a bit looser this time, I'd like to get a real feeling of speed with it. This is a sleek, powerful desert dweller influenced by horses, roadrunners and a bit of black cape cobra.

The holes in its chest and the external windpipes are an adaptation to running at extremely high speeds - it opens these passages to let air stream directly into/through its gigantic lungs. Positions may alter.

Still have a lot of refining/rendering/anatomic detail to add! I'd also like to put a bit of blur on the legs to imply speed, but I also want to detail the weird feet it's gonna have. I'll see if I can find a balance.

    Alien racerWIP: WindShrieker

    0
Awesome submissions so far! Its been a while since my last stab at this so I figured I'd see what I could come up with . Decided to go with a mammal like organism inspired by pronghorn antelope and cheetah. working on the design for the saddle and/or bridle. creature is small/ medium build, since the alien "jockey" would stand at the tallest up to an average male hips. Their name roughly translated from the native tongue translates into "Wind Shrieker". Their horns are hollow and have holes that create piercing cries depending on how fast they run.

Loving this, NJ... amazing how extending that foreleg improved both the impression of movement and the composition...

And Abrazuno, that is one classy-looking beast... reminds me of something one of Miyazaki's heroines would lope around on (and love the rendering!).

@alembic2: i was also thinking flying fish, flying horned wahle to be exact, no copying intended

great ideas in this thread so far. i think i'm going for #1 of my thumbnails, he looks the fastest. some kind of dinosaurish creature with long, front legs to support his speed (dont know how much sense they make but well)
