    Fantastic!

I can really feel the difference between all the materials, I'm a particularly big fan of the hair. I have black (super dark brown) hair myself, and really appreciate when someone does it well... Although I really wish I could see it in person.

I'd hate to pick apart such a lovely painting... But not getting any criticism sucks more. So I'm a little bothered by the arms. The arm itself feels a little flat; the sort of thing which can happen sometimes you have such a polished painting. On the other hand, you could also have painted it perfectly, and the flatness could be a result of the way the model is lit. With your skill level I'm willing to bet it's the latter, but I'll never know.

Anyway, it's an awesome painting that makes me want to paint again. Ugh, it's almost been 2 years.

Let me jump in here and say how proud I am of Emily. She has endless patience, tremendous determination and grit.

Like the previous works, this is a technical exercise and when she announced she was finished, I looked at it hard and long and could find no fault with it.

I was eager to see it posted here, so I insisted we photograph it, even though it was the end of the day and getting dark. This coming week, perhaps Tuesday, I intend to photograph it again under much better circumstances so it will really show well.

I have no idea what Emily will do next and I'm as curious as any of you and eager to see it unfold.

I thank all of you for your posts and encouraging comments. I'm thrilled Emily has such a terrific support group.

    William, Emily,

Your work together makes me wish I could quit both my jobs to come work on my patience and determination too. Sooooooo nice. I know Jessica feels the same way.

I think, in time, Emily will begin to share those deeper things on her mind in life and of life, which her skills show her capable of communicating in most impressive fashion. With that in mind...beauty is a worthy path. Very nice portrait Emily. Nothing but respect for your hard work here.

Referring to the Bargue studies you completed a while back, may I ask what size you had the plates reproduced to?

We put some retouch varnish on the painting and photographed it again. I think the colors and values are much closer to the original. (And it was brighter outside, too.)

    Here are some close ups:

Size: 92.3 KB

    Name: flowerscu.jpg

I want to explain a little bit about the flowers. I painted them in grasaille first, which means I painted them solely in black and white.
After they were dry, I glazed the colors over them using oil paint mixed with a lot of medium.
It's sort of like hand coloring a black and white photograph.
The intention is to create a luminous look.

wow great portrait! there is something about the breast area that is still not credible though, dont know if you know what i mean....something about the shadeing on the breast that looks abit out of place.

the close up of the face and with that texture it looks incredibl, very real, can almost feel the skin..

I apologize if I am asking too many questions, but I would like to know what brand of easel you work with or if there is a particular easel type you would recommend--an easel that would last me for years. I have seen some rather expensive and allegedly high quality easels online, though I am concerned that I may be looking in the wrong direction. Price is not an issue, but quality is, so I greatly appreciate the opinion of a painter whose work is of expert quality. I appreciate your time. Much thanks (and praise).

This is breathtaking, do you have photos of your progress perhaps, because that would be so interesting to study/see/drool at?
Beautiful, I really was gasping for breath when my eyes saw this, no lie!

Yessssssss! Awesome Emily!!! Look at this...who can deny your talent? You are doing so well it is ridiculous.

Fantastic subtle color/value transitions on the cheeks and on the lips. The expression is fantastic as well. I can see you are becoming so comfortable with drawing that you can adjust for those subtleties in the expression...awesome job.

Wow Emily what a beautiful painting! I was surprised to see how small the original is ... I could have sworn this was at least A1 from looking at the final image. Fantastic detail... thats it I'm making the change to oils : )
