    silentbrain's doodlewidget (update 2/2/09ZOMG)

Hey folks...been about half a year since I visited regularly, mainly in the dsg. Going to the SF Workshop really showed me how much I have left to go before I can be employable, so I'm starting this sketchbook in the hopes that it pressures me to draw more.

Crits welcome, and actually I'm in need of them, but I will try to keep updating this sucker regardless.

hey -sideshowbob-, thanks for your comments! I agree 100% about needing to learn perspective and symmetry. I guess I just gotta keep drawing and watch out for those...

Heya, in that image with the girl and the turret gun, seems like you coulda pushed composition. You've got a single focal area right in the middle of the image, without anything else to move the eye around. its all a pretty similar value too, which isolates the gun blast even more.

your sketches are simple and informative, i wish i sketched a little more like that.

The last image, try to sharpen up or straighten up some of those edges, because the robots look a little "mushy".

Having said that, keep it up, i'm looking forward to seeing where you go with your work.

McLean- Thanks a lot, I needed to hear those crits. I've been spoiled by speedpainting and how liberating it is, but I really gotta get it together already.

Btw, on your suggestion for cleaning up my edges, did you mean inside or outline edges? I became totally confused after reading this post on edge control. Edges...on the inside? If you (or anybody else who is reading this) can explain, I would be very grateful!

    Okay, more sketches...

I drew these figures not really taking my pencil off the paper...was more fun...necks are consistently freakishly long...

Spent more time on this one, even though it was somewhat of a stretch. Gotta get used to it...

Took a little time off to check out the game Beyond Good and Evil...neat aesthetic that game has.

An pic from last year I finally got around to working on...
I want to get back to this one, so crits would be much appreciated. So far I know that the design of the top half of the airship ain't too hot, and composition's probably wonky. Got pointed to the tuts on Feng Zhu's site, hopefully that will help with technique...

Also, if anyone can tell me what "edge control" is referring to (in the post above this one) it would be much appreciated. Funny, for it being my first language, I'm pretty rotten at english...

Dude, I'm loving the airship digi-painting! One crit I have is that the direction of the laser blasts should be more consistent, as they are all coming from the same direction... Maybe sharpen them up a bit too, I think it would be more belilevable that way. It's also a little flat (okay for a work in progress), but don't build the background up too much, for fear that it'll look overworked.

I'm being picky here, your recent digital work is lighyears ahead of the earlier posts. Keep it up!

Bennett- Thanks, I am trying to spend more time on the cg than I used to, I'm glad it shows! I am still working on the fixes you suggested, they are helping a lot.

-sideshowbob- Haha, thanks for always posting positive stuff here

liam.c- Thanks for the heads up, that clears up a lot of confusion! It seems kind of obvious in retrospect, I dunno, maybe I am dumb x_x lol

Topic was "Secretly happy with other's misfortune"
Perspective grid trick in photoshop along with a polystyrene car model and a ton of hours helped with this one...didn't even consider composition though x_x so probably haphazard..
