Looking over this last page, what I'm seeing is very little 'pop'. Your digital paintings all look sort of... flat and soft. I would've liked to see harder edges, stronger outlines (where it makes sense), more contrast and more varied texturing in your pieces.

I like most of the ogre, but it's struggling with a lot of that stuff. And again, the head makes it really static, but you already knew that
Really good job on lighting, though!

Keep it up man, more updates

Angel- Thanks for noticing the nose! I fixed that now and I changed the overall color just a bit towards blue.

Hai- Thanks for the overall crit! I think I kinda understand what you're saying. I'm still working on the edges and the last couple of works like the ogre were experiments with just that. As for the texture, I guess I'll just vary that from time to time, but I don't want it to be the be all and end all of the work. It's just acts as a "finishing touch" to the work.

As for Anders' crit- I do agree with him to an extent. Some pieces miss the final 'punch'. Perhaps its contrast, or focus. I just noticed in the watchmen piece. There is a huge tension between those characters. Those warm and light colours. Strong expression vs no expression. The style difference between those clothes, markings, details. You can't see everything, leaving parts to your imagination. The sketch makes you wonder and adds just this little 'out of the ordinary' feel that grabs your attention. The painting itself is sharp and fluent, making it feel comfortable and interesting.

Obviously, these are very strong and well known character concepts. I also may have deviated from Anders' crit. I only wrote down the gut feeling I have when looking at the watchmen sketch. Because perhaps, it's useful to point out the things that make your work look good. Bit of an odd crit, hope its of any use.

Great seeing you join the activities. Nice going, like the expression. Looks like a painting to me.

Finally! A post! Sorry for the lack of updates.

Anyway, I already started concepting for our sketch group's project. We're basically going to create concepts based on a short story and we're allowed to make our own interpretations on it. The story is "Jack The Giant Killer". You can easily read it online if you guys want.

I decided to start with designing the hero of the story. I wanted to change things up a bit by giving him an asian influence in his design. I based his looks on this famous japanese actor. I thought his face was perfect for what I wanted. And then I started sketching out some clothing ideas. I still haven't decided what look to go for but I would love to hear what you guys think.

    Later!

Hi again. This is just a simple figure practice done from reference. I love doing this stuff.

Sorry for the long absence for those who regularly visit. There are really no excuses for that. Laziness is a sin!

    Hey Dizon,

    Group project headshots-
Very clear and nice concepts. You can see the character changes with each hairstyle. He looks like a 'perfect hero', perhaps because of your ref. Personal choice would be one of the long hairstyles. It seems to fit the setting and adds some more depth to the character in this case. As for the clothing: I like the 2nd jacket because of it's not quite as ordinary and basic as the other two, but not overwhelming either. Seems proper for beginning-mid story. Not sure about the pants. 1st/2nd costume seem more Arabian/Hispanic influenced. Think they're pretty strong overall though. And these concepts also get my own ideas going.

#218,219: Think these are real damn good, they strike me as being pretty realistic. Especially the male seems very lifelike as a whole. It's odd because your brushwork seems very simple. I can't quite figure out your secret. Like it a lot though.

Dude, these black and white things definitely pop! All that stuff I talked about in my post at the top of this page is nowhere to be seen! Loving it.
