Man, do I look sad! I concentrate so hard on these still, that I find it tough to get any expression on my ugly mug.

    Nice work, everyone.

    January Self Portraits

@sula: nice angel and a cool shading on your first portrait.

    @mr.blonde: your eye scares me.

@artaddict: has a lot of emotion...love the lineart! i would say the "best" so far...

@tekno: thats a very clean style. im impressed, but your face looks like a rubbermask. hehe

    keep it comin!

    My first self portret ever

I haven't drawn in months, so I'm kind of happy.
I didn't use an eraser, so there are a lot of mistakes in it..

    C&C are very welcome !!

Great stuff everyone! very inspiring. Since I'm going to be busy doing a lot of 3D the next few months, I figured I should engage myself in some painting activity just to keep the rust off. I'll try to post my portraits regularly. Crits welcome and appreciated. This is me after shoveling snow for an hour.

ladylionness-keep on making those SP's, I've seen quite a bit of improvement since you started
Mr.Blonde- nice one, it's kinda scary. The only thing I would crit is your right eye, it's lost in the black. It kinda looks like an alien's eye
Wishes-nice start. I would work more on the face though. By that I mean, you should spend a little more time working on that area. Measure angles and distances more. Even the tiniest angle can throw off a drawing.
Dimitih- heh I know the feeling. One thing I noticed though, your eyes look a little misleading. It seems like they are closed by looking at the slit, but the color underneath kinda makes it look like it's open and you're missing your pupils...

hehe thanks dario...i think the 'angel' one you're referring to is me falling to my death while looking very nonchalant. I'm working on the shading for it so it reads a little better. Keep up the good work everyone.

oh noes! it's another self portrait!

AAGH! Where did that 3rd hand come from?!? oh myyygoddds..it's chookking meee....glrglglrgrrh

Heh, these were actually pieces I'm including for my art school portfolio (I'm applying to Ringling). They wanted to have some creative pieces in there so I had those made. They especially like those that are realistically rendered and 'unique'.

Good luck with the school, sula. I'm sure you'll have no problem getting in.

Thanks for the support Dimitih, I really do hope I get in I even started up a new Ringling thread for all the 2005 hopefuls way back in June I think. I like your newest self portrait. I like the brushy, impressionistic look. It shows a confidence in your brushstrokes(something I'm afraid I lack). Good work .

Here's another one for my portfolio which I finished today. Bird and eyes are referenced. Oh yeah, if any of you all are wondering the bird in the drawing is where I got my name from. It's also known as the blue footed booby and it is the most awesomest bird on Earth. Oh yeah and one more thing, if you're wondering why the bird looks like it's doing aerobics it's actually performing its mating dance

Wishes: Sula's right. It's all about the placement and proportion first, then the feeling of shape, then everything else. I would focus on the face until you're really satisfied that it's a good representation. All the other stuff is much easier once you get this down.

Sula: these are looking really good. One thing that I'd like to see is a bit more contrast, perhaps a darker pencil to work in a focal point (like in your forst one, or like art_addict's).

Dimitah: I also like the really brushy one, but it seems like you're focusing too much on the nostrils, as they're very dark ovals in the latest one. The first one had them much better integrated.

Yulia: Wow! I can't believe you did this in a car! Great pose and really nice feeling of shape. The dark line on the far side of the nose is a tad bothersome (it seems formulaic), but the dark eyes really come across. So many people think they see things in the eyes that aren't there (whites, highlights, etc.).

Sula & Dogfood: Thnx, I'll try to focus more on just the face.

@ Sula: I really love the one with the bird; it's so cool

@ Yulia: Love the contrast , the eyes look a little bit evil though

@ Dimitih: The nose draws the attention in all of your pics, but it is less in the last one. Probably because you didn't use black in this pic. Try to use a lighter colour the next time you do a fullcolour-one again and it will look much better , you're making a lot of progress!
