    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)

Hya everyone, ok i will stop to bother you with thousands of new threads everytime i have 2 life drawing to show ... and i will have this one thread for life drawings and everyday sketches ...

    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06) Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)
    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06) Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)
    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)

    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06) Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)
    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06) Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)

the 3 first sketches are older (more than 1 week)
i am heavily trying to have a more personal approach in my drawings ... in my lines, in the general "style" even if i know that i must still learn to draw in a realistic way ...
But when i look at the 3 first drawings, i think "well thats quite boring"
i need to think more when drawing, to think about the proportions, to think about where i want the line to go, to think about what i want the drawing to tell, etc ...
    thats hard !

well i only realized that after i did this life drawing last week :
    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)
it had much more life, even if the lines were maybe less accurate ... and it was more "my drawing" than anything else i had done.

well i am rambling, i guess this thread is made for that

so anyone, tell anything you want to tell, everything is good to hear.

Mime - I'm glad that you started your own virtual sketchbook. Like iwasink says, it's great to learn! Keep posting!

(Real comments from me at a later time, just bought silicon and plaster to make my own cast...!)

These are nice mime. I like simplicity of the alcohol piece. Did you do that on cardboard? very resourceful...

I like the little girl sketches, and am interested in what the illustration is about. Mind filling us in?

    Good to see you updating!

    Thank you Jester and Iwasink

In fact i am working hard now, and the next three monthes, because i will try to enter an art school in my town next year, I can try to enter it right in the 3rd year (it is a 5 year school) because of the years i already did before in a graphic design school.
But of course i have to prove myself in an "interview" (is that roght ?) with the school staff, and show my work and motivation.

so i am trying to create more "personnal" works before this deadline. Life drawings is of course a good thing to show, but i also have to show my creativity, and my "world".

this illustration is just a personnal thing
a little girl is hunting butterflies, it is quite dark (night) so she has a lantern. Everything is normal, until one of the butterflies casts a very strange and frightening shadow on a tree nearby ...
    thats all =)
it is just that i quite like butterflies, they are pretty, but i also find that they can be scary , and i want to make a picture that can show that, or something like that.

experimentation under illustrator for the lines of the illustration

    Mime's sketchbook (update 11/06)

i will rework the hands, the errrr thing she holds in her hand to catch the buterflies

and i think i wont rework much, i want to keep the nervous and spontaneous aspect in the lines

i am pretty happy with this "first test" with illustrator for sketch/lines

    share your comments please

I like the drawing of the little girl with the butterflies. good to see you are thinking of drawing people. But remember proportions, proportions, proportions.

    Keep on posting!

mime - what really impresses me is the variety of style you show in your works. As iwasink says: remember proportions!

    Thanxs jester
i'm not sure if it is a quality or a bad thing, this variety ...
But thats mostly one of my biggest concern ... i would like to evolve to a line quality and a "style" that would fit me, but it is also a bit early for that, i am still learning the basics, learning realistic drawing, etc ...
thats why there is so many different styles, i am searching, exploring every ways i can discover, etc ...

there is some new things that i discovered thay i like, for example the line "quality" in my sketch for the little girl drawing, and the style of some character heads i did recently ... but I might be wrong

i would love to hear from any of you what you think interesting in every thing i post, and what is worthless ....

I am in a twist in my "art life" where i start to think also about what i want to say/show instead of just thinking about the technical parts .... and it is scary and very frustrating =)

just doodling thinking more about anatomy and proportions (but it is much less personal ... ill have to find a way to combine both proportions and personality in the end)

looking good man ! I think I'll start a skecthbook thread of my own...

anyway, I love the art student pic. it's quite in line with my own idea of an art student. and is that a scripto lighter ? Those lighters are awesome.

You have good lines in alot of your pics, and you're very good @ drawing the human face...maybe drawing a variety of faces ? I've learned from life drawing class that there is almost limitless possibilities for a person's face. : )

Keep up the sketches, i've been doing studies of hands myself and I find it's helped out alot.

just one thing to keep in mind also while drawing, don't worry about style, your style will come just from drawing from life. Forget style period right now, just concentrate on honing your eyes and mind to work together to see rather than to see what you think you know. Once you study from life and get your skills down that way(which takes a while) then you can start to distort proportions and stylize your work if you wish to. One of my teachers gave some great advice, and ill use the example of comicbooks (i do like comicbooks and i like to draw that way too) learning to draw from comics is not too good because your just learning what that artist has learned
from life and translated into his own style. He is able to build that style off of what he knows from drawing from life. It is the same with any artist. So your journey is to see and put down what you see on paper and discount what your mind thinks it knows. Once you can do that then begin analyzing what your drawing and by that I mean analyze why it is the way it is, see how it could be changed yet still keep that part of it that makes it what it is.

whew that was long winded hehe i hope it isn't too confusing as i have a hard time translating what i feel to words.

As a mans power and knowledge grows so the paths he may choose lessen more and more until he can choose only and whole what he must do.
time to follow the trend: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...14#post1052814

Thanxs Avetice for the nice words

I am not really looking for a style right now, I know it will come in time after tons and tons of drawing. But i am still trying to think about the way i draw things when i draw from imagination, when i am drawing from life of course i am not thinking about style, just about values, shapes, proportions ...

And i must admit i am much much stronger in observation drawing that in imagination drawing, its easier, you see and you draw what you see.
I am sketching lot of different things from life, in order to build a mental database, i know it is too much easy to fall into the "comic book" style and to hide his lacks with some sort of "style"
    and i dont want that

You managed to achieve an interesting atmosphere in your colour test - but I think it's a bit too flat in certain areas (eg. at the roots of the tree trunk)
