I'll go along with evrybody else and say this is a fantastic piece of work, but I have a crit, the baloon seems to be behind the robot. I think this might be due to the position of the highlight on the baloon, if it was closer to the side it would move th baloon forward, that's it.

here's my very minor nitpicks:
- I don't get what's going on with his left hand...it's tough to make out.
- maybe make the eyes a different color? They looks like they're made out of metal like the rest of the body.

Damn man, each piece by you is a little injection of joy. I love the way you can make cold and lifeless things (like robots) so full of life and personality. Hell, you even made ME look adorable. You`re the man!
I was pretty dissatisfied with the way this one turned out, so I'm very grateful for such positive feedback - thank you all for taking the time to comment.
youngpaddy1 - I think the problem is the relative 'weight' of the robot rather than the balloon itself, but I didn't want to push him back any further as that would have meant losing some detail. With hindsight, there should probably have been a more obvious reference for the robot's scale than the trees.
Blackarts - Always good to read your comments, Daryl. The left arm is supposed to be damaged, with the 'hand' smashed off - an attempt to provoke some kind of emotional response in the viewer, or at least encourage you to wonder what events might have lead up to this image. It is a bit indistinct, though; maybe a more obvious 'elbow' would make it more obvious that the hand is missing and better define that area as an arm. For the eyes, I did try different colours, but I was really trying to keep my palette under tight control on this one and didn't want anything with too much contrast that might pull attention from the balloon.

Jull - Any pic featuring a lonely robot is going to stand in the shadow of Imphead's work. I adore his stuff, though he wasn't a conscious influence for this image. And that's a great phrase to hear..!

It's nice, but it's driving me nuts. Something with his head and eyes. I feel like he's looking to the left and that the things that are his eyes are really his ears. I think it's because the you have an indentation of what might be a mouth on the side and I'm on too much caffeine. Nice paint!

The one thing I think could use some work is the eye, as said before. But my suggestion is that you should put a shutter on his eye, you know to simulate an iris.

Matt I was wondering why you were disastisfied with this piece. I have been looking at your work for along time and have been a fan of it, and this is one of my favorite pieces. I think you said once that "Gorton's Christmas Wish" was the best piece you have ever done and nothing you do seems to come close to it. I think this one comes pretty close to it, maybe cause they are similar in subject matter and ideas behind them, I dunno. But I like it alot.
Wicked Matt. Interestingly, I once gave you the same advice you used to give me - to increase your value range. This is totally nice, and you've got out of the slightly chalky rendering. Nice to see even people who kick my ass can get better.

I love the cohesion of color thoughout the piece but the subtle way you've made the balloon stand out but still managed to make it part of the whole is pure talent. I too agree that the eyes of the robot should be a different color than the rest of him. It would add to the robot's personality (eyes are the windows to the soul.) and give creedence to the robot's self-realization, an important element to the story you've created here.
The illusion of depth captured by the way you've made the foreground leg and the background leg seperated by the line of trees was a terrific choice. It gives the picture a much greater sense of space and allows the viewer to more easily fall into the idea of this image being plausible, allowing them more freedom to explore the concept rather than dwelling on the elements. As was mentioned earlier the balloon is having a bit of this issue and might work in the image better if you were to lenghten the string to the point where it crosses in front of the robot in some way. This would firmly establish it's position on the z axis in comparison to the robot and would kill that weird back and forth that's occuring now. Also, I would love to see you do something with the upper left sky area. As it is right now the directional lines created by the clouds inhibits the eye from flowing in towards the robot, your main subject, and instead take they eye down and to the left, off the page. If you were to break that line with some sky scrapers, (One of my favorite background elements.) on a slight cant that were angled in the opposite direction you'd break this flow. Or if not that, more clouds, a blimp, some power lines, leaves/paper in the wind,etc. Something to fill in that space and draw the focus back to the robot/balloon.
And lastly about influence, no matter if it was concious or subconcious, no matter if it was Jon, or me or Ash Wood, or any of the other thousand people doing pill headed robots, the important thing is make it your own. We'll never be able to totally hide from our influences, as long as you make them your own you should never have to apologize... Be proud, this is definitely Max Dixon in spades.
