Fifty minutes from photo. Felt I needed some practise choosing colours more quickly and painting more aggressively. I'll try to keep at it.

    Great thread!

Too loose. It doesn't hold together well.

I really dig that last one, hethe.

SP in painter. Would've taken it further, but painter kept making these little pixelated artifacts, very frustrating. Anyone else had that problem?

Erik: Yep, it's all done using the palette knife. I have a modified version of the palette knife that becomes more opaque the more you press with the stylus. However, if you use the palette knife lightly, it smudges the paint.

hethe: Wow, I really like that last one. Great shapes and atmospheric colour.

Tedsuo: Good portrait, I like it. I think the pixelation comes from the way that Painter does impasto. I think that if you use brushes like palette knife and chalk with impasto, it can sometimes add too much impasto and you get that massive difference.

fredfrickstone: Woah, fred! Long time. Great to see some new stuff. I'm too shy to take my sketchbook out in public.

    Back into Photoshop for this:

A bit too stylised. Must do more ref work.

ceenda, nice work, and great to see you again too. It has been long. Your work has grown since, I am really impressed. I need to hang around again more, I am stressing with all the work...this really helps loosen up again...are you working for anyone currently? How has your art curve been lately? Talk with ya again soon.

Inspired by the excellent color tutorial on Fred's site:

Photoshop with reference. Trying to see accurate color relationships. I need to do more of these...

    Ordering Painter 8 tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments Ron. The art curve has been pretty bad this year because my time has been taken up with Research work (I'm a programmer by trade), which is why I've decided to stop doing programming and take time to study art for a few years. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while, but only recently decided that, at 23, I should probably be thinking about persuing art sooner rather than later. I have absolutely no idea where to get this education though. Possibly somewhere like Florence Academy of Art if my portfolio comes up to scratch. I put up a post about it here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...&threadid=8227 . Programming is good for $$$ and job opportunities, but if you don't enjoy it then it's time to try something else, I think.

Tedsuo: Great! The values here are awesome. Been thinking about Painter 8 too, but they'll have to patch some very annoying UI things before they get my £150.
