heads, robots, and other inanimate objects Feb20

    Well, well, new thread....

I started my last one in Aug of 03' an am pretty embarrassed by some of the shit in there. I think I've earned a somewhat clean slate but if you want to journey into my seedy past of doo doo drawings then you can see my old book here:
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...&page=13&pp=60

A near-tech space suit design I'm working on, trying to go for function. These are research pages.

    photo-ref studies

WIP, trying to flesh out the design

    pre-lim design

Character for an HL2 mod, thought I'd show the process from sketch to end.

    pre-lim sketches

progress, this one turned out to be pretty tough, I suk with color...

I also suk at environments so I'm trying to do some studies. 1-hr for each, these are reduced so they don't suk as hard.

Again, i appreciate all comments but feel free to crit!
    -kemp

Thanks flex, t.mO, Joshuathejames, liam.c, SamOs, Bojee, Oliver23, xia, hito, and keepiru fer your comments in the end of the old thread

great new stuff, as I scanned past the wrestler, one part of my brain farted out "nice bit of 3d" then the rest of it said "that's fucking awesome 2d, now shut up and get down". Love the diver studies, especially all the technical odds and sods, for some reason my eye is drawn to the crotch (steady) in the pre-lim design, I think it looks too low, dunno if that's an optical illusion or what.

from the progression on the rest of your work there is no way you're gonna suck at environments for long.

    Very nice studies man.
    I spotted a few issues, so i though you might want to hear em;
The arm on the spacesuit guy on the second pic down is off,
it's too big if the arm is pointing down, and there is no curvature in the elbow or the wrist to indicate otherwise.
The guy on dec2.jpg is broken perspective-wise in the middle, take a closer look at what perspective you have on the torso versus the legs and the pelvic area. The further leg on the wrestler guy seems a bit too short for him to look balanced. That being said, you're doing an awesome job, i'm awed by your gas-mask studies especially.
Hope this helps, maybe you'll find a minut to crit some of the latest stuff in my sketchbook, i could really use some constructive crits.

Hey steak. cool stuff as always. I think the weakest part though, has to be the wrestler. He just does not have a really good dynamic pose. Maybe you can fix that up. Also, I personally it was a better idea just puting stuff in the old thread. It can be a kinda rough task switching back and forth. that is me anyway. can't wait fo mo.

you rock as always man, starting a new thread sounds like a good idea, might do that aswell..
I really like your brush pen stuff, looks real fun using that thing,i tryed looking 4 sum the other day but couldnt find any, maybe thats because i dont know what a brush pen is.lol..

No real crits, maybe just spend more time painting up your latest one(Ultimate PDA),i dunno.
Those enviroments aint bad at all man.I need to do more of those too,im such a lazy kunt.

good gravy that robot spaceman claw guy is sweeet. On the painting, I'd suggest diffusing where the hair meets the head. It's all one big shape that isn't curving too well with the forms, and making her face go flat to me....at least, i think thats why the face looks so much flatter then everything else to me...

    STEAK!

    Now THAT is a WRASTLER!!!

Dang, man....this stuff is da BOMB. You really are getting great at your painting technique, those WIPS are a real treat! I love seeing the spacesuit designs, I can tell that you are figuring out the function of each accessory.

My fave is the wrestler, but that last suit design is shaping up to be a KILLER design piece.

Thanks for keeping me inspired, I promise to put down the X-Box controller soon...

Looking forward to you filling up this new sketchbook!

    Cheers, pal!~~~JadeDragon

whoa- your tech images are getting really really good! I also love that mecha-style space suit, very crisp and clean. Did you post the original sketch for that in your old book? I'm interested in seeing the progression from pencil to opaque color, it's an area I struggle with in my work.

yeah baby there's the update I was lookin for...

Your folio really was killer in SF... there's something about seeing the pieces printed out that gives them a different quality than on screen.

Don't forget all the little guys like me when you're famous

it's about time you posted, I was going to have to start harassing you!!

Great pencil work on all of these; the quiet little sketchbook pages from the plane trip home are my favorites of this bunch but the collabs are a lot of fun, too.

wow meng, these are quite nice.

your figure has gotten lightyears better, it expresses alot of form and structure while keeping a very graceful gestural quality, something i find to be quite hard. yet you are achieving it quite nicely.

ill be in the sanf ran LA area in like 3 weeks, we should hang out while im there.

take care old friend, ill be lurking and posting more often.

Thanks Gibsini. The botsuit was a personal work and I painted it in PS over pencil lineart.

Fuck I'm sorry for the long absense guys. It brings a tear to ma' eye and a quiver to ma' heart to see you guys ressurecting this thread like this. Shit's been ultra-busy at work and I'm still adjusting to juggling the rat-race of an adult... something i'm horribly bad at. BUT I do have a few new things in the works that'll hopefully be resolved soon.

Thanks fellas, hopefully I'll dust this thread off soon
