    Portfolio for Publishing Industry

    Hey everyone,

I know that some of you have created covers for the publishing industry. I'm almost ready to start sending out my portfolio to different genre publishers, but I have a question.

How many pieces should I include? I've checked the Artists and Graphic Designers Market 2004, but it doesn't really specify the number of pieces to include with your submission.

I've heard anywhere from 4-10 pieces is enough, but I wanted to check before I start approaching art directors. Any suggestions?

    John Ward

Just send your best work. If that means 1 piece, then just send 1.

Agreed. Why not just send out one as a teaser and see if they want to see more. I guess there's a huge difference between sending out teasers blindly to actually having an appointment to meet with an art director at a place where you've doen some research on them. If you know what kind of work they buy, then tailor the portfolio towards what they're looking for.

Remember that you want to offer THEM a service; you're not trying to convince them to buy something they might not want.

I’d say at least ten. Maybe fifteen being ideal.

After quality, the number one thing an art director is going to look for is consistency. Anything less than 10, and I’d be afraid that the artist might not have enough control to do solid work all of the time.
