    Riddick matte painting

Here is a matte painting I did for the Chronicles of Riddick.

    Riddick matte painting

Some of thee bottom structure and rocks were a set as seen here-
    Riddick matte painting
It was for a sunrise shot so I painted it with predawn light as well so we could animate it.

There are a bunch more Riddick paintings on my site. I hope you like.

You know the only reason I saw this movie was for the matte painting visuals. Amazing as always Dylan.
Soon you can critique my matte painting work. I'd appreciate that greatly.
Keep up the good work. I love it.

haha, all i can say is that i know nothing about matte painting in terms of techniques to use, etc. etc.

this is very beautiful though and makes me want to see the movie just for the visuals. (which is something i do often).

And can i say this makes me want to learn more? How is this done? I see tons of digital matte paintings in Cinefex and on good dvd extras but i never really know how the process is undergone.

Can you provide any illumination as to how these paintings are done? Or guide me in the right direction. Btw, which software did you use.

Hope these aren't too many questions. lol.

    Hey! I recognize that!

Seriously though guys. Dylan did a fantastic job on Riddick. There were some insane deadlines and he got it all done right and quick.

And look at the condition of the original plate btw. That's a long way to go from plate to finished matte. So good.

The Riddick mattes are some of the coolest I've seen in years.

    Cheers,

    Phil

I just got to see Riddick and then see a post from the guy that did that matte painting?... it's incredible!! And then getting to see your website.. it doesn't get any more professional than that! It feels like an absolute privilage to be able to comment with such professionals in this forum. Thanks for the post.

I can't remember if I posted the last time I saw your work here, which was before you put up the Riddick matts on your site.

What everyone else said, plus some. Very cool stuff. It is a unique treat, for us average scribblers, to not only get to see, but have responses from the peeps doing the upper ladder stuff. Something to aspire to for sure.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the warm response. I wish I had time to post more often.

Jack Frost- I did this one in about 3 days. Times vary from 1 day to 2 weeks.

MrMooTheFirst-Well that is a big question. Digital matte paintings are done in any way that gets the shot done. Photoshop is the primary software. It is usually a good balance between painting and photo elements. I usually start every shot with a sketch like those in the sketches section on my site. I work out color and composition first and then once that is approved, move on to detailing. Head on over to mattepainting.org and you will probably learn a lot.

PhilHolland- Thanks, Phil, I appreciate it, you are too kind.

if it weren't for the fact that it's midnight and that I have to get to bed so I can get up in time to see Billy Graham, I'd probably gawk for a hella long time!

I told myself and some of my friends after seeing riddick that I would LOVE to meet some of the artists involved in that film. I may not have technically met you, but you worked on the film and this is good enough for me. Makes me proud to be a small part of the art community and of this forum community to have people doing pro work for major hollywood productions posting here.

Hollywood, no small-time job. I've always wanted to do work in filmmaking, but I wound up looking to other career goals. I'm out of flighty adjectives, so I'll just go spend some quality time with my pillow.

    Massively impressed!
