    My first attempt at digital painting...any feedback would be much appreciated

    Use hard brushes. Banish blur, smooth and smear.

    Your reptile is far too soft and smeary. The background has some better textures, but that only makes it come forward and out-compete with the foreground. Forget backgrounds for the moment, draw an arrow where your light source is coming from, pick some hard brushes at near 100% opacity and concentrate on your boy.
    Draw more. Draw from reference. Draw on paper with a pencil. Do it every day. If you can't draw a good banana, how you going to draw a space marine?

    i dont really know, what you would expect to gain, from doing that.

    what really puzzles me, is that you reversed the focus in your study. you just slapped a texture on the background because you could. what was your initial aim to learn with that study?

    in general i would advise people to begin by studying how pictures work, not by quite aimlessly trying to replicate them.
