CHOW 486 Factory Cyber Slave (wips)

    Name: CHOW BANNER sins copy.jpg
Views: 2339
Size: 258.7 KB

    Character of the Week #486
    Factory Cyber Slave
    Deadline - Monday, April 29th 8AM GMT

In the future giant factories will cover the planet, churning out toxic fumes and chewing through massive amounts of slave labour to keep the forges burning and the cogs running.
The few privileged rule over the vast unwashed masses, and the life of a factory slave is bleak and often short thanks to the dangers of the machines they strive to keep running.

Often each slave is dedicated to a specific task, such as carrying heavy loads, repairing machinery, stoking forges, etc. So will carry the relevant tools or equipment to better serve their masters in their role and are rarely allowed to take them off or put them down, even for a moment. The most sadistic of overseers surgically graft machinery to their workers, such as replacing arms with fork lifts so they become nothing but tools themselves. Think a sci fi Victorian workhouse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workhouse

    • Male or female
    • Slave dedicated to a single task in the factory.
    • Genre is sci fi.

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots either in the wips thread or finals thread.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models
, rushed works/ rough sketches. PHOTO TEXTURES are allowed as long as they are suitably worked into the piece and not lazily dumped on top.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process:

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

    Hey dude!

Not sure if you're using this design, but just did a couple of quick dirty edits as suggestions.

I'm not sure this design is a great fit for the brief - at least in term of mood as he looks more heroic rather than downtrodden. Not that the bulky build and drill arm couldn't work - just maybe needs a shift in tone? I can thing of loads of ways to push the idea, but don't want to get in the way of your own creative process.

Are you squeezing your designs into frame by the way, as this and the Sin design look a bit squat in proportions. I ask because I've been prone to that at times - so always give yourself enough room (if that's the case).

I would as usual also suggest a less square on view so you can use perspective to give your pose and character... umm... an... extra dimension...

Mythmaker: Your the man and absolutely right on all this. Thank you, and I really like the edit stuff you did there. I think I may conjure something else up as I too feel this doesn't fit the brief well. I got something I'm feeling a bit more. Thanks again tough and I hope you are entering here as well. Last round you rocked man, the entry came out super nice 100

Lege1: It's not a requirement, but I'm not getting "downtrodden slave" from his body language / equipment. Also, having a pickaxe in his hand seems a little redundant with the drill arm. Maybe a second cybernetic arm? Having no hands and only tools would speak more to the theme.

Initial sketches. Going for a sort of butcher drone in an abattoir, churning out processed factory meats. Trying to think of a way to hardwire him to his buzzing chainaxe things. There will be lots of chains as well.

Moirae: Thanks man and I feel the same. I think I get too carried away with my initial idea with that dude and did not pay attention to the brief; just wanted to draw a big buff guy with a mechanical drill arm, lol. I'm going to try and present something different.

Lege1: That's insane, I love it. I assume he's a giant of some kind, if that were to human scale he would be very good at moving pebbles...
Also maybe try a more centaur type anatomy? Might see a bit more of the human element then.

Here's my butcher guy so far. He's looking more and more brutal so he's now part of "Soylet G Industries"

Moirae: Thanks much man and glad you like this concept. I wasn't really going for a giant although that could work; I was actually considering keeping it to human scale where the machinery is scaled down and the human is built in. Either way, looking forward to developments on it. Your piece is coming out great as well. Definitely a frightful situation and the chain aspect brings me back to the old school Hell Raiser movies =)

Moirae - that's a cool sketch; the tools are particularly good.

    Lege1 - It's completely bonkers, but that's why I like it!

I wasn't keen on this theme until I starting thinking about it. I've been using it to practice aspects of my process - focusing in on drawing and rendering more cleanly. Now I almost have a finished piece as a consequence!

I don't want to spend time prepping images now, so I'll upload them when I've finished.
