CHOW 485 Magnificent Seven Sins (wips)

CHOW 485 Magnificent Seven Sins (wips)

    Character of the Week #485
    Magnificent Seven Sins
    Deadline - Monday, April 15th 8AM GMT

The winner of this round will have their entry displayed on the CHOW banner for the next five rounds!

Sin and depravity is rife in the Wild West. With each evil act something dark and sinister stirs across the dusty Badlands.
Demons assail the thin veil between worlds, weakened by the immoralities of mankind, applauding each bandit raid, slowly growing stronger with each drop of innocent blood spilt in the sand.

When Hell’s gates burst, spewing devils and demons across the frontier the first to step fourth, spurs jangling, were the seven sins themselves.

Lust, wrath, sloth, greed, envy, gluttony and pride.

Now the seven ride the plains, sowing sin and destruction in twisted, dark parodies of gunslingers of the Wild West.

Demonic: Demons come in many shapes and forms, not just red with horns and cloven hooves, so be creative. Your character must be obviously supernatural in some way, it can be obvious or something subtle like glowing eyes or levitation. As long as your character cannot be mistaken for an ordinary mortal / human.

    • Male or female humanoid demon (see above)
    • Based on one of the seven deadly sins.
    • Wild West theme.

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots either in the wips thread or finals thread.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models
, rushed works/ rough sketches. PHOTO TEXTURES are allowed as long as they are suitably worked into the piece and not lazily dumped on top.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process:

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

I'm probably going to miss the deadline as I'll be away most of next week, but this is a fun topic idea.

I started off with Greed in mind, kicking around a cactus monster.
The idea that it metabolizes gold into the needles of its body, spines that show off while protecting its personal wealth.

Though in exploring some value sketches I branched off into a bedraggled, vaguely carrion-like Sloth.
I'm thinking to make the face with a more pronounced bird affect or sagging features.

I didn't really have a sin in mind for this character. I just had an initial image of a man burning in my head when I read the prompt, so I went and illustrated that. If I have to pick a sin, I guess it would be lust?

Anyways, this is my speed painted entry.

I think this is going to be it for Pride. Looking forward to maybe doing a few others.

Edgarej: Thanks man, just enjoying the down time here and there and the creative process of this stuff. Your piece is looking really cool as well. Are you going to do more than one character? I'd love to try and rock all 7 but that's seeming more and more like wishful thinking, lol.

@nick... I was thinking of doing more, but there is a sudden shift in activities for this week so now I don't know when I could draw again. If I find the time, I might squeeze in one more, but that's about the only one I could manage.

edgarej: Gluttony came out awesome man, it kind of reminds me like a pig demon or something. Very cool thing with what's going on with the gun hand there. This is a very cool topic, so many possibilities. Keep at it, I', between doing taxes, work, and the gym....

I think between you, infernoking, and I we got all characters except wrath... I'm going to try for it, I'm just not sure when...

Are you having fun? Can I play?!

Sorry - I have a habit of doing things quietly and not participating. Here's some rough sketches I did for the sin of lust.

Went with with a female because I'm not very imaginative or something...

My plan was to follow good process: sketches, do a page of thumbs, then do a detailed drawing so I could paint relatively hassle-free.

Unfortunately I have a habit of following the path of most resistance. So I did the first thumbnail (third sketch), quite liked it so I blew it up and detailed it out until I'd got a moderately refined greyscale image. I kept telling myself to stop and do things 'properly', but I wouldn't listen so I've had to face the consequences; such as colouring the greyscale which I really don't like doing, and trying to fix drawing problems later in the process which is stressful, tedious and time consuming.

So - you might say I'm... 'paying for my sins'...

Anyway - it's not going too badly considering, so hopefully I'll get it finished in time.

Thanks Edgar - I was getting a feel for the mood with that. I think I've managed to carry that over into the final piece, though she looks quite different.

I managed to resolve most of the problems that were bugging me yesterday. It's not going to be issue free, but I like it enough to post it after some more noodling...

As for your pieces - I think the second is the stronger. Maybe worth tightening it up a bit if you have time (though the looseness does have a nice energy to it).
