    The plain bg looks incomplete. It looks better with the flowers. This is purely an aesthetic judgement

    I have to disagree that plain bg looks incomplete, you just have to think what you hide/emphasize, push/pull in you subject+ I tend to think it as like abstract where you can test some mark making which you can use in you subject too if you add something to portrait whatever is it, it should tell something about person, personality, interests etc.
