    Unexplainable Drawing Pain?

    Has Anyone Experienced This Before?:

A year and a half ago, I finally overcame a 3+ year struggle with chronic fatigue and joint pain. I figured it was lack of excercise, art school stress, and just not expressing my feelings...

BUT, I still have problems with drawing. I can draw for five minutes at the most, then I have pain in my fingers, wrist, and elbow. Has anyone had this before? The weird thing is, my drawing has been getting better, because I doodle all the time at work, waiting for renders. But I can never get anything much more cohesive than a doodle or quick sketch, because there is just too much discomfort. I half think it's just that I've conditioned myself to feel this way, or something. Maybe I am built this way (really thin.) I stretch, run, lift weights a bit, meditate some times. According to doctor tests, I am fine. I am thinking about trying tai chi.

So, if anyone has any ideas about this, I would love to hear them. I just thought I would post it, seeing if any other drawers had had this. Luckily, I can make a living doing 3d graphics type things, but I would love to get back to the drawing I used to do.

    Thanks.

My friend has a similar problem... He figured out that he was griping his pen in a pain inducing way. Try holding your pen in a defferent way or maybe not as hard... SOrry man that really sucks... HOpe u feel better!

Are you drawing in an odd position? Maybe an awkward angle that's putting pressure on the joints? I would suggest drawing from the shoulder, but you may already be doing that. Only other things I could suggest are accupuncture, or maybe hypnosis

When I first got back into drawing seriously I had pain in my hand and forearm for a while, but that's only natural. Have you been away from art for awhile?

you might want to try different types of pen grip - maybe try a really fat pen or something.

    Thanks for all the info.

I did have a weird way to hold the pencil, and I'm trying to get used to better "hand positions". It does help a bit. I am sure my posture could be better.

I will try left handed drawing, if only for the challenge.

"Homeopathy". I will look into that ASAP.

You should draw with your mind....

no I kid. My hand is starting to ache too. I work a computer all day and go home and draw. So in summary I don't have a solution for you... From what I understand tho there are some hand and wrist stretches that one can do to help that. I'll get back when I learn more.

Many of my fellow art students had problems with hand pains of some kind of another. In almost all of the cases, the problem was solved by loosening the grip around the pencil. If your knuckles are white, then you are holding it too hard. If you keep the pencil so loose that one could snatch it right out of your grip, you might just get rid of the problem.

Alternating your way of holding the pencil might also help.

But then again, this might not help you at all..

ive seen people draw with the pen between middle and forfinger, it worked really well for them, might wanna try somthing like that also stops you from gripping your pen too tightly.
