CHOW 479 Hogmanay Fire Dancer (wips)

CHOW 479 Hogmanay Fire Dancer (wips)

    Character of the Week #479

    Hogmanay Fire Dancer
    Deadline - Monday, January 14th 8AM GMT

In the Scottish village of Stonehaven Hogmanay (New Year) is celebrated by a procession of “Fireball swingers” who dance with burning baskets swinging from chains on each arm.

    https://www.tripsavvy.com/stonehaven...stival-1662599
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogmanay

Design a “fire dancer” (sounds better than “fire swinger” I think).

You can be as creative as you like with this, and the flames can come from any source, not just the burning baskets I described. If you go for a fantasy theme an elven fire mage could make her own flames, a post-apocalyptic mutant cultist worshipping some fire idol could be leaping around with flame throwers and so on.

    • Human or humanoid, male or female.
    • Must be depicted dancing
    • Involves fire
    • (optional) Scottish theme

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots either in the wips thread or finals thread.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models
, rushed works/ rough sketches. PHOTO TEXTURES are allowed as long as they are suitably worked into the piece and not lazily dumped on top.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process:

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

    I recently liked this in artstation, and I think it's an appropriate inspiration for this challenge;

My idea will combine expressive dance with shamanistic ritual.

Ok so I'm getting somewhere. I decided early on that I wanted a nighttime sand scene... I originally imagined a more elongated, dynamic movement pose but I really liked the explosive compression and sense of ritual in this one. I figured the cloth and tails of the flames would help communicate the sense of movement. The flames were originally going to move up, but I think the current placeholder feels more explosive. The cool moonlit waves and rocks help offset the fiery reds. Maybe the distant cliffs tangent the moors of Scotland?

MikeWest: To me it looks like she is getting ready to smash the two fiery orbs down on the ground. Is that what you meant by "explosive compression?" If nit, you could tilt her head back, which would change the dynamic of the pose completely.

Moirae: That's farout man! That flame hat helmet thing is very cool!

Edgarej: Nice warmup man! I really like the second and 4rth in reading order.

MikeWest:Very cool wips and direction with everything man. I really like the choice you have selected to go with. Very cool pose and painting style. I agree with what Moirae is saying about the head tilt changing the pose dynamics.

@lege1... I like 2 and 4 too, but I realized that those two are side profiles, so those might not work for this CHOW. I'm leaning towards three, though I might have to do some adjustments on the pose so the front is showing.

I think 3 really sells the idea. If you don't want to catch her mid flight (which is difficult doing a front view of), perhaps pivoting/balancing on one leg? One of those sideways ballerina jumps could work too.

    M&L:
I'm settling into a color scheme and working some kinks out. What I meant was that I'm looking to capture the sense of compression in the landing between a jump, spin or other forceful movement, without going too extreme. The flame tails turn out cheesy and unconvincing however I place them so the jury's a bit out on that, I'm fine with the flames being perceived as flung downwards, although I think the current state of the presentation is more open to interpretation. I think the surrounding flickers and flames help sell it as a part of a lengthier display.

The face is terrible at the moment but I don't think I want to change the angle of the head just yet, I'm sure it'll work. Lots of work ahead on the anatomy, especially the arms, the ground needs to be flattened to fit the perspective, and the lighting is turning into a solid challenge... so I'm glad we're still early into the week!
