I am interested in some of Robert Whitmore's work. Looking closely at some of his oil paintings, It seems to me that he used some sort of an oil painting paper in stead of either cotton or linen canvas. It looks very, very smooth and stiff unlike cotton or linen, lying perfectly flat on a piece of foam board. I have never seen cotton or linen canvas that looks that smooth and stiff. On some of the paintings, the edges look torn at right angles, like paper would do, instead of frayed strings like a canvas. Is anyone here familiar with his work, or what material he painted most of his portrait figures on?

Thanks for your time.
