    EOW/CHOW 327: The Nutcracker

    EOW/CHOW 327: The Nutcracker

Special Character of the Week / EOW Crossover!

    Topic: The Nutcracker

Design an environment from the popular Christmas tale “the nutcracker” by E.T.A Hoffmann.

    Synopsis:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nu...the_Mouse_King
"If you can’t be bothered reading all that, here are some of the more prominent characters, which you can use as a starting point for thinking about which environment to design:

    Grandfather Drosselmeyer (clockmaker and inventor)

    Environment example: Clockmaker's Shop

Mouse King (apparently has seven heads)

    Example: Mouse King's Treasure Room

The Nutcracker (wooden figure brought to life)
    Example: Kingdom of Dolls

Madam Mouserinks, mouse queen (Villain of the piece. A sorceress/witch?)

Marie (protagonist, owner of the nutcracker)

You are very welcome to go nuts (!) creatively with your designs if you wish. Ie The nutcracker might be a clockwork steampunk monstrosity or a magical golem of sorts, as long as it has some vague links to its origin. There are other characters, many other dolls are mentioned but never described for instance, so you can be as obscure as you like. If you are a fan of the ballet or the new film that is out and there are characters in them that are not in the original story they are fine too. (I have seen neither.) -- Moirae
    Environment Assignments:
Design three environments of your choice and focus on the storytelling elements. If you need assistance, I'd be happy to suggest some ideas!

    Expectations of the Client

    -
To qualify for the poll, complete all three concepts. They must be final and portfolio-ready, but if they are half-done but look developed enough, we will let them go to poll.
-If you finish two out of three, or even one out of three, consider this a victory for you and your portfolio development -- or just for fun in general. This is a four week project that's meant to challenge participants and encourage them to produce portfolio-grade work. Artists in the EOW have been asking for something like this for years and many have gone on to become a force in the concept art industry.

Deadline: You will have FOUR weeks to finish your assignment. Due 12/31/2018 (or just post after new year's eve... it's fine!)

Good luck and give feedback to others!

Hello guys, I would like to join this Chow/Eow too! I made these three compositions to choose only one of them. I'd like the gentlemen's opinion. I really liked the third, and you guys?

Vittor G - The composition is spot-on and very refreshing. The nutcracker missing a leg, the panicked woman in the foreground, the mice scurrying atop the massive bedroom furniture, are all nice touches. A traditional mood is set here (fairy tail style) with the bright attic/basement light, reminding us it could be a contemporary setting.

My only critique might be that this entry is coming out to look more like an illustration than an environmental illustration with the focus on the environment aspect. The piece does have the environment showing and you do a great job of incorporating all of the elements which makes this concept work... but this is only a trivial thing moderators of the community activities have to say -- no worries here.
