Round #433 - Front Line Assault

    Topic:

    #433 Front Line Assault!

We have a special COW this time around as we're venturing into war. You are to design two creatures that make up the first and second waves of an army. The first wave of creatures are smaller and meant to blast the opposing forces with blunt trauma and ultimately be annoying a ferocious. The second wave of creatures are slightly larger and more cunning. They're deadlier and attack with much more precision. Your task is to design both creatures and show them side by side, preferably in a fighting pose right before the assault is launched. I'm giving you two weeks on this one. I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving too! Now draw!

    Due Tuesday, December 4th!

I like where you're taking this Trixtar! As soon as I read the first description I was thinking maby something Rhinocerous-like as well.
If I may give some feedback, I'd say put some extra work in the ground/shading as the way you did it makes me feel like it's floating, taking away the *ahum* gravity of the situation.

Yeah yeah, less bad puns, more drawing... I'll get to it

Think about how the two creatures can interact. Are they similar? What's their primary attack function? Can they team up? There's lots of possibilities here and don't hesitate to go crazy with the concepts.

My idea was that the molerat uses the shade created by the feathers, and the sudden exposure of sunlight enrages it.
When the bigger creature uses the shade to lure the smaller creature from it's underground/cave-like hiding place, it practically kidnaps the creature.

The thing is, at this point I'm kinda bothered by how this is a 2-man army, so I might think up something different all together.

The little guys are first, swarming by the thousands and taking out the lower, while the big guys complete the second wave over the top. Their simplicity lies only in their purpose for war.

I finally made a sketch I'm ok with. Now the connection between both creatures is more likely.

I'll hope to start rendering later today

edit: is there a way to show the image without it showing again below as an Attached image? I feel this kinda clutters things up

I've put down some of the ground layers, but it took me more effort than expected as I havn't done oil in a while and got all the proportions of the medium wrong.
I'm letting things get some air for a day or two before I try to finish it.

Progress is slower than expected. I'm not too happy with the layer I've added today. Progress is slower than expected, and my skill with oilpaint has degenerated more by lack of use over the last few years than I'm comfortable with. I'm fairly sure I won't make deadline. But, I'm having fun, and am improving myself so I'll keep this going untill it's done

I think my biggest mistakes so far have been starting out too wet on applying the first layers. And not making any sketches on the colour scheme...
Let's do that better next time.
