    Beginning Anew

    Hello Everyone,

Welcome to my sketchbook. After agonizing over it for years, I've decided I want to continue on my original goal to become a professional artist. I know it's not a job that makes you any kind of money (as I have been told my entire life which is what forced me to quit my pursuit the first time). But it's fulfilling to me and it's something I have a passion for. Anyway, please give me feedback and critiques if possible. I want to improve! Right now I'm a science major (I'm a senior, I graduate May 2019). I think about going to art school almost every day, but we'll see. One of my goals with this sketchbook is to develop work that is portfolio worthy. Anyway, thank you for stopping by my sketchbook I like to visit other people's sketchbooks to leave your link and I'll visit it! (that is, if your link isn't in your signature).

    Thank you,
    Best wishes,

    Sketch WIP

This is a drawing from my sketchbook. I'm working on rendering the face better. Any tips? This is how far I've gotten on my own using some reference. Sorry for the low-quality/darkness. I took a picture of it with my phone. haha.

Here is another WIP I have. Please leave me some feedback! I'm not good at drawing hands so I've been practicing a lot.

In the first image I was trying to do some figure studies in pen. By using the pen I'm hoping to increase the quality of my line. I tend to have shaky hands because I'm unsure of what lines to put down. Using the pen forces me to really consider my lines more. In the second image I was using Col-Erase pencils a little. In the third image I combined pens and pencils.

In these images I was studying some references for faces and I was trying to draw with pen and marker that way I wouldn't erase anything.

Nice, I always like sketchbooks that are full of colour and different uses of media and stuff. I feel it's how a sketchbook should look. What I would say though, is if you want to draw faces, try drawing them from different angles a bit. All we've seen so far are straight on.

I like the use of different mediums also.

I would also add to start learning about the proportions of the face. Right now I notice you make your eyes too big. If you search for face proportions on youtube, you'll have a bunch of video's on it. The Gnomon Workshop has a great in depth tutorial on the proportions of the face. If you pay $50 a month you get access to all of their videos.

Also, something to keep in mind as you are studying is what field of art you want to go into. That will help you with your goals.

Thank you for your comment on my sketchbook! I agree, I need to vary it up and stop drawing the face from just the front (that's the easy way so I keep doing it, but I'm not doing myself any favors).

Thank you! I will start learning facial proportions, I have a lot of books (some of them are the Loomis ones) on drawing the head and face. I think I also have a really in depth one, but I can't remember who wrote it. He's a great figure drawing artist though. I can't afford the $50 a month right now, but I think I saw some good videos on Skillshare. Thank you for the comment and advice. I will start working on it!

I did some sketching a couple days ago (Conceptart.org was down for me though so I couldn't post). Now that my finals are over and done with (thank God, nothing worse than writing huge papers on climate change...) I can finally spend my few weeks off getting back into drawing. I know a lot of people won't see this sketchbook because there are so many floating around, but this is more for me. Any critiques or helpful advice, or even just a comment or two are appreciated though!

    Have a Happy Holiday everyone

Trying to practice drawing faces and doing work digitally. I hope to keep improving, and maybe by this time next year I'll be a lot better (Lord knows I need to keep getting more practice!).

I've been working on this for several hours now. My hand is starting to hurt a bit. I'm going for something a little cartoonish but with a little bit of realistic shading. I want to make it into an avatar of myself. The only issue is that I CANNOT draw curly hair. I have really curly hair so I have to find a way to make it work. I think I have some ideas on what it should look like, but I'll need to practice a lot before I can get it all settled. Anyway, any constructive criticism is welcomed. ^_^

Trying to work on the hair. I added my glasses. I'm nowhere near where I want to be as an artist, especially not digitally. But everyday I will practice. Even if no one looks at this sketchbook, or leaves critiques. I'm doing this for me. It's my own art journey, and I will fight to become a good artist. A PROFESSIONAL artist. I just need to keep shouting into the abyss until something shouts back.

It's finished for now. I'm done looking at this. Two days, about 6-7 hours of work and this is all I have to show. ha.

I think your latest piece looks good, you did well with the hair, it reads quite clearly. Those thick lines around the face and neck are a little bit distracting but being a cartoonish figure it doesn't look too foreign.

I really hope to see you upload more content, since you wish to be a professional artist do you plan to go to some form of school or will you be self taught?

Thank you! I put the avatar I made of myself on a critique board on here too so I can learn what to fix. People gave me some good direction on the eyes and the hoodie and stuff. I'm going to fix it today and upload it. I actually went to school for fine arts, but I only completed my associates before I switched to a bachelors in science. However, I don't have a passion for the science field at all. I did it because people told me there's no money in art. I have the money to pay off half of my schooling, so I want to attend one of the art colleges in the area and get my bachelors in illustration. I made a schedule for myself to practice every single day. Right now I want to make an illustration portfolio. I love getting art critiques so I know what to fix on my stuff. Thank you so much for coming by my sketchbook I'll be uploading on it regularly!

Working on this idea for a digital painting. I know the light source, and I have the ideas in my head for what I want to do with this piece. I think the pose is a little off though, so I'm working on figuring it out.

Started working in ideas I had for a painting. I love plague doctors, I don't know why. haha. I'll be posting lots of studies soon, like anatomy and light studies and whatnot because I really want to study the fundamentals again. I also really want to learn how to capture light in my paintings.

Another cartoonish drawing. One day I'll be able to draw/paint something in photoshop that isn't completely silly. For now I'm practicing using photoshop for art. So far I'm starting to understand how painting works. I need a lot more practice but in time.

I decided to get back to basics and work on a study tonight in my new sketchbook. It's a study of Sargent's male nude study. I wanted to learn more about light on forms and how to make something look like it had weight and surfaces. Anyway. That's all I have for now. This week I'm doing Ahmed Aldoori's ten heads in ten days challenge so I can learn how to draw faces better (hopefully).

    Hi there!

Really nice start to the sketchbook. Faces are looking looking good and the fact you're branching into full figures and faces at different angles will really help in the long run.

Some of the front facing faces have had a bit of issues sliding features and the cheek bones being different widths on each side. I get the problem myself and can be pretty hard to see on your own drawings. If you flip your images horizontally that helps your eyes to spot the issues easier and quicker I'd definitely advise giving that a go, especially whilst your images are still in sketch mode.

Good luck with the heads challenge, sounds like good fun and I'm sure you'll see a BIG difference once you've finished the challenge.

    Cheers

Thank you so much for visiting my sketchbook and giving me helpful critiques! I really appreciate it! I did notice that my faces tend to skew a bit. lol I'll try the flipping the canvas method. Thank you! I've been working in my regular sketchbook too lately, do you think I can turn the picture upside while working traditionally and still be able to spot the distortion in features? Flipping the images in photoshop is a lot easier than in real life, so I hope I can do the same! I wish I could stop myself from making all my faces lopsided haha With practice I'm sure!

Here are some of the heads from the 100 Heads in 10 Days challenge I'm doing. I can already see a difference between the different heads. I drew the first 10 heads on day one, and the next 10 on day two.

I also wanted to post two of my favorite works from the past. The breast and lighting study is from October 2017, and the cardinal was the first ever digital painting I did (December 25th, 2013). I had posted that painting on here and received really good critique (it looked really, really bad before the critiques! Now it's decent).

Like how you used the Plague Doctor to make your own. Do you know were the picture from #22? I saved it to my phone, but I'll like a source to save it to desktop.
Come say Hi! I could always use a boost.
