    Progress thread from the start.

First stuff I drew since high school.
Some are exercises from books I’m learning to draw from.

    Hello!

I like what you have so far. I think your sense of light and dark values is really good. For the first drawing, perhaps you could do some more rendering to make the values more seamless. In your second image, perhaps you could push the values even further for some more contrast! ^_^ I like your anatomy studies too. Anatomy is really hard, I struggle with it a lot.

    Hey thanks man.
i wish I was as far along to claim any knowledge on anatomy.
The last drawing was made using sightsize method copying a drawing.
    The two females were eyeballed.
I didn’t know how to measure with the females.
With the 2 Bargue plates I had just started comprehending how to measure and chip away at the image with envelope and further lines tightening the envelope.
It may sound a little rediculous but once I started getting a better grasp on measuring and blocking in big to small I got really excited and decided to jump into a figure drawing, which you see with the dude.
anyway, thanks for your reply and the crit.
The bowl may be redrawn at some point, as will the females most definitely.
Ill probably even paint Pandora eventually.

    Worked a little bit more.
    mark, erase, mark erase.
My hatching is atrocious and my values have degenerated into lines that actually cause tears to flow out of my eyeballs.
Parts of the paper are fuzzy so they polish the ends of my charcoal stick so that’s nice.
    But hey, it’s all good.
I still don’t know how to post images properly on this thread.
I upload them in “manage attachments “ but then...clueless.
Oh hey, looks like I did it.
    not all is lost.

I see no real improvement on the figure. It feels as you lacked a little.confidence and never be bashful about your wips. And with charcoal it very forgiving.

Nice work. You'll already way better than I will ever be, and you have hardly even started. Looks like you'll make yourself a nice little career. :-)

The bowl is drawing from life.
    the sphere is from imagination.
the figures and Bargue plate faces are from photo references.
So all in all not that impressive.

I think maybe with some people online today there are different goals that require different approaches.

I am looking to becoming an oil painter.
Not as a career. Not as a job. (Although if I learn and produce work that sells and I can live off it that would be great).
You guys that are looking to become illustrators or animators have an additional requirement on top of art fundamentals......speed.
That is a thing I am not going for at all.
I can take all the time in the world on one drawing (something I am trying to become patient enough to do) to make it perfect.

Also, I am looking to learn the fundamentals of drawing from life.

Yes, eventually, once I get better at measuring and stuff, I will look to become faster so I can draw from a model and stuff, but it is unfair to compare my approach to your approach.
I know how discouraging drawing can be at times bro, but that is what drawing is.
We give ourselves a set of problems to solve, over and over again.

So dude, don’t even look at other people’s stuff and compare to you and get discouraged.
Especially someone that doesn’t value speed at all at this point.

Ive gone through several sketchbooks in the past week and yours was one of them.
Just keep drawing and doing excercises and stuff will click.

Like one poster said, maybe slow down and take a little bit more time on each line.

You have two eyes, two hands, a pencil, paper.
The only thing separating you from a da Vinci drawing is what is in your brain.
So just take your time and think about the problems you are giving yourself.
I don’t know, but maybe first you need to realize that symbol drawing and drawing what you see are two separate things.
And realize that you gotta be able to draw real life stuff before you can simplify it into a comic or whatever.
