    EOW/IDW 334: Water Matador's Craft

    EOW/IDW 334: Water Matador's Craft

    Design a water matador's hovercraft/boat/submersible/agile watercraft.

It must be able to be operated quickly so as to avoid the impact of an attacking sea titan.

Here's the link to the environment of the week thread for this activity:
    Deadline: November 30, 2018

    Requirements:

    1. Design and draw a water matador's craft.
    2. That's it... now draw!

I've been meaning to ask, what's the deal with rule #4 about no 3D entries allowed? A lot of industrial/vehicle design nowadays is concepted straight in 3D (VR, Fusion 360, MOI, Blender, ZBrush, etc). I was going to say it's an antiquated rule, but not sure that makes sense either: why was 3D ever not allowed in the first place? Curious about the history behind that.

Yeah I'm not sure why that rule is there. I looked over the IDW discussion thread and didn't see any info related to why it was instituted as a rule. I think it is an antiquated rule. No problem with using 3D for me. Limiting the mediums available doesn't really help anybody and the activity isn't as active as it once was. The moderators who created that rule are all long gone from the forum, I suppose, too.

I think the 3d rule was a holdover to keep people from trying to pass off generic-downloaded assets as their own original work.

All right, here's some progress on this. I used Blender to block out the ship, and I downloaded a stock pre-posed warrior character from Adobe Mixamo, which I thought kinda looked like an alien matador and fit the bill.

Some thoughts behind the ship design:
    - I wanted the ship to look festive and ceremonial, a mix of regal and utilitarian
    - I thought the ship should be relatively big, so faraway spectators could see it, and so could the humongous sea creatures
    - I decided a good way to solve the above would be to have bright screens / pixels built into the surface of the ship: people can see these from far away, and the sea creature could see it both from a distance and from underwater. The matador could use the touchscreen on the console in front of him to choose from sets of patterns and colors animating across the screens, to attract / enrage the beast, or to encourage the audience to cheer. The wings / screens themselves are relatively thin, and they're oriented in such a way that they barely block the matador's field of view.
    - There are various weapons built into the ship. There are guided laser cannons at the outer edges of the wings, and some kind of harpoon on a rotating tracked ring thing mounted on the inner ring
    - I figured I could make this submersible by having the matador toggle on some kind of transparent bubble sphere that's emitted from the inner ring, but it looks goofy to my eyes, like a retro 50s flying saucer, so I'm not sure about it.
