    Value Steps

    Hello everyone,

So, I'm curious how many steps are you using in your work. I've seen artists recommend anything from two to twelve.

By value steps I mean the discrete set of values ranging from dark to light that are used to simulate real world form and lighting.

    What are you all doing?

i try to keep it at 3-5 at first, for thumbs and go from there. the simpler the better for as long as possible.
the natural tendency to produce mush gets in the way most of the time, but at least i strive to keep it as simple as possible for as long as i can. and it seems the older i get the better it works .

Yeah i know what you mean about keeping it down in the beginning. I try to keep it to two for thumbs but it never seems like enough to me and I have to go three

Have you seen where Loomis recommends four for thumbs?
