    CHOW 470 Demonic Sniper (Finals)

    CHOW 470 Demonic Sniper (Finals)

    Character of the Week #470

    Demonic Sniper
    Deadline - Monday, September 10th 8AM GMT

The winner of this challenge will have their entry displayed on the chow banner for the next five rounds!

Few try to sneak into hell, but many try their hardest to escape. Along the walls of the inferno are tall towers; at the top of each is a demon that specialises in long range weaponry to bring down escapees so that the hellhounds can drag the unfortunate back to their torments.

For eons these demons have been armed with crossbows, but new technologies from the mortal realms have inspired the infernal denizens of hell
and now they carry various long rifles of dread design.

Weapons: The rifles the demons carry can be anything from standard firearms found in the mortal world or of magical design. Perhaps they are of hell forged metal with burning shells, a lesser demon trapped and bound to spit ensorcelled bullets from its mouth or some hideous contraption stitched together from the damned themselves.

Demons aren’t just fire, horns and cloven hoofs anymore, feel free to get creative.
Depending on your design the weapon could even be part of the demon itself.

    • Male or female humanoid demon.
    • Carries long range firearm (no bows or crossbows)

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots either in the wips thread or finals thread.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models
, rushed works/ rough sketches. PHOTO TEXTURES are allowed as long as they are suitably worked into the piece and not lazily dumped on top.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process:

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

The Ghillieman was created for a single purpose. Shooting souls that try to escape Hell. He was constructed from the beards of trophy hunters and poachers and infused with the essence of a demon. The Ghillieman sits in his tower and fires into those who try to climb the wall and escape. Seeing as how his targets are technically already dead, he can't actually kill them, but the injuries he inflicts are painful and take a very long time to regenerate properly...if ever. Additionally, he is given charge over the hellhounds that patrol inside and outside of the walls. The dogs drag the prisoners back in bloody heaps.

I've never taken part in this activity before. If I'm missing something rule-wise, please let me know. I did read them...like a few minutes ago. I hope the background elements are simple enough. I spent maybe a minute on that.

I mean, would it be so bad if all anyone remembers about me is that I was a lover of art, of women, and wine? Perhaps I reach too far.

@david a ray... the beauty of conceptart.org's contests is that so long as you do the competition in good faith, ie, no outright cheating like plagiarising someone else's work, then the rules are pretty relaxed.

Been busy with other stuff, so this will be my entry, but for what it's worth - I did read the feedback and appreciate it!

Looks fine to me, David_a_ray. You already had two images in the wips bit, but I can appreciate belts and braces just in case.

Not entirely happy with this thing's colors, and I think I messed up the legs.
Still I really liked this assignment!

I've missed the deadline because I only found out about the challenge yesterday, but I finished my image so I figured I'll just post it anyway
Also, please let me know if I've messed up any of the rules

Some crits from me. Please feel free to leave some comments of your own.

David_a_ray: I like the background story, especially him being woven out of poacher’s beards. The extreme shadow might more of a hindrance than a boon; covering half the character like that it seems like a good way of getting out of painting all that fur when you could have put more detail in. Or maybe a secondary light source from the left.
Raganosis: Nice going on the more unusual design, but I would have expected the bright pink light to hit the demon more, especially around the belly. One thing I think would have helped might have been a contrasting colour. He’s basically pinks and purples from head to toe. Even his teeth (both sets) are pink. There are a few orange veins and a little green on his chin, but they don’t stand out enough in my opinion, maybe up the contrast overall?
Aotix: Sometimes if you aren’t feeling a design it can be better to go back to the drawing board and start again, rather than plugging away at something you don’t feel is right. I think the armour itself seems odd, the upper part looks ok, but I think the lower bit probably should have continued down the legs. Maybe have a look at film and computer game armour. It does have a slight Halo in hell kind of look to it. Maybe research some of the covenant soldiers form Halo and imagine what they would look like in a fantasy setting. (That might even make a good CHOW someday.)
PutHaKyun: The red and blue creates a strange contrast to me. I probably would have used some purples to tie it together more, warm purples in the demon’s skin and cold purple amongst the blues to create sort of a mid – ground / transition between the hot and cold. Also the hat is very close to the demon’s colouring and gets lost a little.
InfernoKing: I like the design of the demon, it’s just the pose seems very confusing. We can see the top of the platform, so we can assume we are looking down at the demon, but the legs line up as if we are looking at them straight on, we should really be seeing a lot of the upper thighs and the lower leg in a steep, downward perspective. I also think the heads would have been more prominent if they rose above the shoulders, creating a stronger outline / silhouette. At the moment they are buried in the shoulders and only notable because of the bright eyes.
Ognyendyolic: Nice going for such a short space of time, pity you missed the poll though. It’s a great design with a good colour scheme, but the skinny, bendy legs with the tiny, tiny ankles seem utterly at odds with the bulky upper half.

You saw one of my tricks! !?! !

Then dare to expose it? You could have used it for yourself, but now the trick is known. Cat's just being tossed out of bags on every street corner.

Moirae - thanks for the feedback, some good points.
I think you did a really nice design this time, like the tower details and the pose, also multiple eyes on the body a cool idea.
I think snipers gun could be more organic and demonic(like a part with the scope), atm it looks like a standard rifle with special scope. Also the hair cut you gave looks a bit like the character is bold or a clowns hair cut somehow because of color, it works for the creepy part though .
