The Mikecorriero vs. Digitalgannon vs. Oregano Challenge Thread

- Must use symbology that the artist can explain - symbology must be obvious, but meaning can be obscure - ref. Imp Head's work.

- Winner is People's Choice - Finals to be posted in a new thread.

LOL - hey Mike no worries. I just posted the thread last night, so seeing as how busy you are it's amazing you got to it so soon.
I'm sorry to hear that you are still fighting that tendonitus. That totally sucks.
Anyway, if you are game, whenever you are ready. I understand about the work situation, and almost didn't post this because of mine.
Anywhey, keep me posted.

You know, I don't have a clue.I was kinda hopin' you'd have an idea
Maybe some kind-hearted passerby would take pity on us and suggest a topic?

Well, I'll toss a few your way then.
-Small creature that hordes objects of a certain nature.
-Loyal guard of an long abandoned castle.
Look forward to seeing whatever you guys come up with(even if you don't use these).

"a small flying river stork that hords loyal guards at the hidden entrance of a castle?"
Sorry. J/K. I'm sick and feeling sort of punchy at the moment. Any of these sound good to me. Let me sleep on it, and if I don't come up with something I guess I'll chose one tomorrow unless something really strkes you or an inocent bystander.
PS. and yes, thank you Cyrus for your ideas!

awwwwwwwwwww shit, I feel like the fat kid on the playground no one wants to pick for kickball....
DONT FORGET ABOUT ME!!!! not as talented as you to, but i held up a bit in TD7 (which seems like Years ago....)
J/k guys- see what you can do w/ out me weighing you two down
November 8th, 2004 #7
Hell, I'd say you did more than hold up! I'm game if Mike's game to have you on board. Nothing like doing it right!
Okay, here's what i'm thinking: I'm thinking sort something sort of twisted - not gorey, per se, just twisted. Kind of like a fairy tale on acid - something that's gone wrong in a psychotic sort of way. Something that's odd, twisted, off, utilizes symbology, feels like the fairy tale has just met the freak show... Something like...
Any of Imp Head's Stuff, Brom's Work, some Jon Foster's stuff or almost any of Puddinhead's stuff.
> Character driven. Can be a portrait or a scene, artist's choice.
> Must use symbology that the artist can explain - symbology must be obvious, but meaning can be obscure - ref. Imp Head's work.
> Medium: Open
> Deadline: ?
> Winner is People's Choice
> No prize, unless someone wants to front one
Let me know whatcha think.

Are you cool with DG joining in the fun if he's up to it?
November 8th, 2004 #9
Okay, sounds good. I'd like to hear from DG to make it official wether he's in or not.
Also, had an idea to up the stakes a little:
Losers ship a print, their cost, of their piece to the winner. Prints should be done on at least water colour paper, so they are suitable for framing.
If this is all cool (DG joining, and the winning stakes) I'll recap the challenge - do we need to recap it in another thread, or will this one work?

re: the print before I'm outta here for a couple hours - you guys are complicating it! Don't you have a desktop printer? watercolour paper works fine with an inkjet - I've got an HP and I do it all the time. Had an Epson previously. That's all I was thinking, nothing fancy. Watercolour paper is (farily) cheap and looks good with the prints.
Anyway, it was just a thought.
The only thing left is a deadline...? And I've no clue when that should be.
November 9th, 2004 #12
Hey Mike, DG,
Okay, Dec 1st sounds good to me. Whatever on the print, it was just a thought to up the stakes some.
We can define the topic more, if you like. If something is looking a bit vague to you, let me know what you would like clarified, or feel free to add your own notes to the criteria.
I"m cool with sketches going here. It'll be fun to see some wips.

Just wanted to drop a note and let you guys know that even though I've been avalanched over the past week with projects, I'll be posting some sketches and what-not over the weekend.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what you two come up with!
back to work...
November 11th, 2004 #14
...I suppose... I was thinking more along the lines of something orignal, but if you've got an idea, run with it. Lahd knows I won't complain!
Now that I thinking about it, that does blast this wide open, doesn't it? I like the idea.. hehe

November 12th, 2004 #16
Um, Mike. That's cool.
Now stoppit, okay? I don't want to see anything that good in this thread again!
November 12th, 2004 #17
Mike, that's looking really good.
Question: it looks like you are working with graphite, but your background is throwing me - looks like something digital possibly. Whatcha usin' bro?
November 12th, 2004 #18
Mike, that's totally cool. I use a mechanical pencil that's like 14 years old and just Dixon Ticonderoga Standard yellow #2/HB soft pencil. Whatever works man.
The mouse is sweet.
Here's just some character sketches. I ended up going with an Allice in Wonderland theme. I'll explain the symbology after I get the compositional sketches done, because right now, I'm not totally sure what I'm going to include. I will say this, though: the theme is a love triangle between the Mad Hatter, Alice, and the Queen of Hearts.
Here's some character roughs for Alice and the Hatter, the Rabbit and the Cat.
