    Arik's Sketchbook

Hi, I'm a storyboard and concept artist. I want to push my work further as I have trouble with that final 'polish' - so please critique away!

There's more development on my artstation: https://www.artstation.com/arikb for some reason some of the images don't want to upload here.

I have a long way to go when it comes to environments so any critique would be hugely appreciated

I'm trying to improve my illustrative concept art - so doing stuff that isn't 100% model/turnaround sheets.

I feel there's a lot to improve, but I learnt a lot with this piece and am looking forward to applying what I've learnt on the next one.

Your creatures and object designs have a great sense of "body" to them, a well-defined presence on the page. I like the color schemes you use, and would like to see slightly more bright colors. You seem to enjoy using an earthy color palette which works! Really like the environment you did -- a lost village disconnected from its bridge

    Thanks RandAlThor and Vulgar'
I try to keep to a relatively desaturated colour palette most of the time, but I definitely agree that some bright colours wouldn't go amiss. I'll try using a brighter colour palette next time and see how that turns out

i think yor concepts look really cool
environments are hard im not good at them either but what helps a little is
    - lots of thumbnails
    - sketching witouth a frame so you don't have to think about composition at the same time
    - designing the different elements seperatly before putting them together
-plating with the sizes of the elements a lot
    - learn a bit of 3D to help with that damned perspective

Thanks for the tips EliClaes Sketching without the frame sounds really cool. I do know some 3D but I find it such a pain in the butt - I'll force myself to use it from now on though because I always regret it afterwards; like you said it helps with the damned perspective haha.

A couple of studies I did a week or so ago now. Tried studying an environment using a photograph by BPSola (https://www.instagram.com/bpsola/):

Some 30 minute face studies, I want to get that loose effect where the brushstrokes give form and shape, but I still have a ways to go I think:

I entered the Feudal Japan keyframe challenge over on ArtStation to force myself out of my comfort zone and do some environments.
Whilst they're nowhere near perfect, I learnt a lot doing them and it was refreshing to do something different

Critique away - I'd really love to know what my weakest areas are so I can improve on them first.
