CHOW 468 COW crossover parasitic host

CHOW 468 COW crossover parasitic host

    Character of the Week #468
    Parasite Host
    Deadline - Monday, August 13th 8AM GMT

There are countless parasitic beings which use humankind for food, feeding off our thoughts, our blood, providing incubation for their eggs or a myriad of other hideous reasons. Some are tiny, able to burrow inside, others large, sitting or wrapping around the host in a death grip. Stranger still some parasites are actually many times the size of their prey, subsuming them whole for a horribly slow fate. Some parasites actually create unintended beneficial side effects (if only temporarily) such as upping reaction time or IQ, and these are highly sought after, even if they are just as dangerous.

For the character part of this challenge you will depict the parasite and its host. In the case of parasites that cannot be seen (ie they burrow inside, out of sight) then some kind of symptoms and/or side effects must be shown on your character. Maybe the parasite promotes uncontrollable growths or accelerates the metabolism so their eyes glow and steam rises as they boil within. The possibilities are endless, so long as it isn’t just some guy standing there with an arrow saying “There’s a Martian heart-worm in here!”

Also, the parasite much follow the rules for COW, ie it must be a creature, not a plant or fungus, etc.
    COW Thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...st-WIPS-Thread

    • Male or female human or humanoid
    • Clearly afflicted by a parasite (see above)
    • Open genre

    The Rules:

    - FINALS: Must post in finals thread before the deadline
    - KNEES UP: Must show at least 3/4 of the character, from at least the knees up.
    - FRONT VIEW: Must be able to see the front of design. No back views without a front.
    - WIPS: Must show at least 2 work in progress shots either in the wips thread or finals thread.
    - READABLE: Design must be readable, as in a 3D model could be made from your image.
    - ONLY ONE: May only submit one entry. No multiple submissions.
    - 3D: Must be originally created models, excluding primitives. 3D paint-overs permitted. If you choose to use 3D in whole or in part you must show a screenshot of the model in 3D software with final entry.
    - UNACCEPTABLE: These are not permitted: Photo paint-overs, photobashing, pre-made or purchased 3D
    models
, rushed works/ rough sketches. PHOTO TEXTURES are allowed as long as they are suitably worked into the piece and not lazily dumped on top.
    - NEW USERS: Must submit entries by 6pm GMT on due date, due to conceptart.org's moderation process:

    - DESIGN: Design your character for the brief, not your personal fetish. Nudes without some design are not permitted.
    - READ: Read through the threads; there may be answers to your questions already posted.
    - FUN: Have fun!

Would everyone like an extra week on the deadline, as many of you may be doing two things across chow and cow?

Hi CHOW folks! Certainly don't get over here as often as I should, could always use the character practice. Here's a quick rendering of my host to go along with the parasite over at the COW.

PutHaKyun: I'm not sure what you were aiming for, but I like it - it's fun, dynamic, and the style is interesting! There's still plenty of time to have another go anyway.

Scorge: The first one is pretty cool, but I much prefer the second - it's a lot more dynamic and horrific. I was going to say it reminds me of The Thing, but then I thought of Dead Space and then I also thought of Dark Souls 2... and so on and so forth...

And now I'm thinking... I spend too much time looking at art and not enough time making it!

Speaking of which - I should probably get a move on with my own entry!

Scourge: If you have wips, put them up, any amount of padding is welcome on the threads. It's more for participation purposes, they don't have to be wips of whatever final you put up, ( you seem spoilt for choice).

@Moirae: Cool, understandable. I didn't really save any process for the second one because I did it in a few hours and forgot to save iterations. Here's what I've got for the first guy though.Name: Parasite-Host-Process.jpg

Hey Moirae - I'm not sure what to say about the deadline. I haven't got a start on this side yet apart from some rough sketching, so could probably make use of the extra time (or just procrastinate for another week!). But I don't want to hold things up if people aren't interested in the theme.

It does seem very quiet at the moment. Is it vacation time everywhere, or are people just not inspired or maybe intimidated by the crossover theme?!

Hmm, it is a little quite here.

So, do people want more time or to hurry on to a new subject? (This will only be on the chow side, cow deadlines subject to Bobby Rebholz.)

I'm thinking either the creature has some soporific effect, or maybe that some cult worships such beasts and considers having one suck the life out of you a honourable experience ( would be quite easy to remove otherwise.) As such I want it to be potentially beautiful whilst still a little bit icky. Probably a little of both. Anyway here is what I have so far.

Finals thread up, new deadline of an extra week for the chow part of this challenge.

If anyone really wants to get onto a new subject, give me a shout and I can overlap this one with a new one.

Vittor G: The last looks good, not entirely sure what is happening yet, or what the nature of the parasite is. The later versions give more of an impression that the parasite is in control, the first ones seem like a happy partnership, whichever is fine depending on what you are going for. Is the big axe shaped thing on the back of his neck a growth or the parasite itself?

Lege1: You can really push your zombie further, the twisted ankle really fits, but the upper body comes across really stiff, I tend to think of
standard (?) zombies as floppy and all over the place. You could also go a bit resident evil and have the parasite more prominent and really get some gore going. Lastly the outfit is a missed opportunity to tell a story. What was he before he was hijacked? A mechanic with a spanner still in his hand? A dock worker on a space station? Jeans and a vest seem very generic.

Hi everybody. Been YEARS since I've even visited this site. I'm just getting back into art and am enjoying doing pencil drawings so pls excuse the lack of color.

This is Rosebud. She injects her foes with an energetic/ooze parasite. But of course the parasite loves her and she loves it so she allows it to live with her while she's not using it to vanquish her enemies Sorry if this isn't parasite-y enough. I try to avoid evil and gross but I really wanted to do a CHOW.

Moirae: I really appreciate that crit man and I see what you are saying. I honestly don't really like this chracter I put together, but it was my first time drawing a zombie so a lot of new stuff there. Very weird and wonky anatomy that you would think would be easy, but actually pretty challenging. My dude there is wearing a tank top but I guess it reads more like a vest which sucks. In my mind the character was just your average street dude that got slapped with the sickness, lol. Either way I'm going to have a second go at it if I can afford the time which is always an issue for us artists....grrrrr....Can someone please figure out how to freeze the clock? lol I like the idea also of elaborating on the out fit this way the character has more of a back story. Very cool stuff indeed. I'm always so concentrated on the illustration side of things I feel I really neglect the concepts which are just as important if not more. I have my reasons but should really try to focus on the concepts more. Thanks again man! I appreciate you!

    Welcome back LukeShetler.
You don't have to go the gross out gore route, just show some sort of symbiotic link between them. Maybe their eyes glow with the same weird colour, unless you're keeping it black and white in which case maybe even a shadowy claw / hand resting on her shoulder as a kind or protective gesture. Or maybe instead of the heart tattoo on her cheek you could have a small version of the parasite's face with grin, as if it's marked her as it's own. There are many different possibilities.
