The site makes my images bigger than they actually are

When I add an image to the post, site shows it much bigger than it's actual size. I tried to upload 1400px width and it spredened to all post width. I've changed the width to 1000px, but anyway now it is bigger than it has to be. How can I fix it?
Does anyone have the same problem or is it just me?
I want to restart my presence on this site, but this problem confuses me.
    Thanks

There is no such thing as 'its actual size', pixels are meaningless.
Can you show us an example?

Here is a screenshot. Could it be because I didn't change dpi from 300 to 72?

You go to 'Go Advanced' when posting a reply. Press 'Manage Attachments', then upload the image. After the image has upload press 'Insert Inline'. and where the message is double click the picture and there should be size options.
