    Foxy Fern's Sketchbook

Hi there. I used to draw a lot when I was a kid, and originally went into graphic design in college. However, I decided to make the transition into computer animation at the age of 20 and that's what my career is now. Unfortunately I kinda stopped drawing then, with only occasional sketching once or twice a year, getting frustrated because my level is so far behind so many others around me my age. I know everyone's different, and I'm not going to get better unless I keep at it. So I'm posting a sketchbook here in hopes that it will encourage me to do things more regularly, and perhaps other people such as yourself can give me pointers on what to focus on. So...to start with I'll post my latest finished drawing since that will be the thumbnail of the sketchbook:

    Edit: Updating with latest photo

Getting back into fundamentals with some practice on perspective and foreshortening.

Second photo is one I originally had as my thumbnail but just leaving it here for progress sake.

I am loving ProCreate so far! Still trying to get a grasp on color/lighting though.

Latest characterizing piece. I've been having fun trying to create complete drawings but I think it's time for me to go back to a few fundamentals. I jumped on a discounted Schoolism subscription the other day so I'm going to start making my way through those classes and track my progress here. I'll still do some completed drawings now and then but I'll be interested in seeing if these exercises help me improve.

Practiced some gesture drawing last night after watching a bit of Alex Woo's Gesture Drawing course on Schoolism. Definitely feel it helped me a bit, but need to keep up the practice.

I know that some things can be written off as 'style' choices. But most of the eyes you draw look like they are painted onto a person's face. Try and add a little bit of depth to them.

Hi FoxyFern! I know you've already been on here for about a month, but welcome nonetheless! I went through the Alex Woo course this past winter. I'm curious to see what you'll think of it and if it helped you. Good luck with your art and keep posting!

Thank you, AJams! I don't disagree. While there is such a thing as style, I don't want to use style as an excuse to do something "wrong". I think I will need to practice drawing some realistic eyes for a bit. It seems I haven't quite nailed down the perspective of them. Eyes are my favorite feature and I want to make sure to get them right!

Awesome, and thanks for the welcome! I'll be doing my best to make good use of my subscription over the next year.

Working on my cel shading techniques and pushing the silhouette based off of reference photos. Next I will be practicing drawing realistic eyes in order to get better at drawing the stylized ones as previously mentioned.

Did some more drawings and practicing. First image is a Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fanart and the second is a self-portrait.
