My Sketchbook - Aspiring Concept Artist

Hi Guys, I'm Himesh Anand from India and currently I'm 18yrs old. My dream is to become a famous Concept Artist just like my Inspirations ( Ruan Jia, Wei Feng, Fenghua Zhong, Marko Djurdjevic, Feng Zhu etc..). Conceptart.org has lost its Popularity since Marko and other guys left the platform and I want to help this website to become famous again. I'll be posting my WIP and works here because I want to inspire other artists to make them believe "Nothing is Impossible"

    My YouTube channel :- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQd..._-whxXsx9nSkdQ

    Thanks a lot guys

As you might know already , i'm a huge fan of Ruan Jia and i'm trying to figure out how he paints and render by observing his artworks alot , i came to know that he works with huge resolution whenever he's trying to render something , He's actually a very abstract/messy artist, his artworks might look really polished and clean to you but when you zoom in really close you will come to know the truth about his artstyle and techniques, So what i've learned from observing is :- Start with Low resolution something like (2000x1000) and block out the basics like shape , sketch whatever you like and then increase your image resolution slowly to 8k and then polish it and then increase it even more like 24k ( you pc might get laggy here , so i would say that if u have a crappy pc then don't go over 15k )

This is a 2hours sketch i did after observing his rendering style , i used the same technique as i described here

Jesus your 18? I'm trying to like you but my jealousy is getting in the way haha. I really like what you said in the intro about making CA.org famous again. I secretly have the same goal. Or at least if not CA.org, just the idea of artists sharing their sketchbooks and journeys. To me CA.org isn't about the critiques or getting views as much as reading about other people's struggles and the inspiration of watching them improve. ArtStation, DeviantArt, Facebook, Tumblr, blogs, etc are great and all but they don't give that feeling of looking through someones sketchbook. It probably might just be me but I like scrolling through a long wall of raw sketchy images full of failure and mistakes.

Don't beat yourself up over not being able to paint like Ruan Jia, no one can haha. And he spends like a million years (not really, but a long time) on each painting I've heard, he's a beast. On the last image, love the determination and fire that you want to become just as good. I think there's too much empty space on the left side of the image, and the light makes little sense at this point. Also, looking at the image i'm very drawn to both the building AND the path leading forward. I think it would be better to choose one of them as a dominating element. I know it's very early in the image, and I don't know if you want to take it further but I reckon I could say a few words.

I agree to some extent what DoctorCoco said about how cool it is to follow someones journey here on CA. However, I feel like critiques should be the main focus. It's a huge part of improving, and we have this amazing platform to do so. I started here a long time ago, and it was very different back then. Conceptart veterans who started way before me says this place was a relentless critiquing battlefield, and everyone loved it. Call me old fashioned, but that sounds so freaking cool haha. It's what we all want though right? We just wanna git gud.

Anyway, get back to drawing! Excited to follow your journey.

Have to agree with Doc. and Uiriamu, people should give more critic, not just "good job" and then to next sketchbook there was some critique going on when I joined but I believe there was more people around here as well, if you wanna some of it then there's critic section, but its not same as its for one piece.

Try to use right size brushes, work big to small so you dont have to clean up that much in later stages

Hi Guys, So today was my Maths Exam and it went real bad xD. i'm not a very good student in academics, i always have very poor grades and stuff :p because i never too focus on it, and i don't like the way School teach us, in my opinion it kills creative people. They will literally make u a efficient working machine rather than new original individual with unique way of thinking. anyways Rant aside xD so after giving my test i had 20min of free time left and i thought lets make a sketch!
i did made a sketch and it turned out pretty okay so i wanted to share it here :p

I really enjoy your paintings, you've definitely got some Anthony Jones-esque rendering going on and it's really nice.
As for the pencil sketches, i prefer your shaded way of drawing over your other more manga-like drawings, it looks more mature and 3-D, but that's just my preference.

    That dog is RIPPED!

Nice work btw, you can tell that you are working hard and it's paying off. You have good knowledge of perspective and I like the fantasy characters you draw.

The first thing i noticed is that your painting is really low contrast. You seem to have a direct source of light coming from up (implied by the figure's cast shadow), yet there's no shadow on the figure itself, so I added that shadow to separate the foreground and background. I also added some foreground rock element in the left corner to keep the eye in the image. I also unified the colors a bit by adding a bit of that red/orange color in the mountains in the back and some of the atmospheric perspective blue in the ground plane in the back, to create a gradual fading out.
The sky is also oddly light (as if the source of light was obscured and diffused) and gray, as if on an overcast day, which would in no way create that type of hard shadows behind the figure, so i darkened the sky a bit and added a light source in the picture plane (the sun), which simultaneously creates the focal point and greater contrast to the floating rock, and also separates the giant rock with a rim light (more contrast).
Now that I look at it, maybe i should have lightened the clouds, i think you did a great job with having them pointing to the focal point (the rock), but i suggest adding something more interesting on it if it's the focal point. Oh yeah, the rock seriously needed a cast shadow too
Hope that helped at least a bit c:
