How does one show a character's feeling and thoughts without drawing a character?

I'm making a scene with a time traveler for school.
We have to draw a time machine and an environment but we're not allowed to draw a character.
Yet I want to make it clear that the time traveler was not expecting the climate he ended up in.
How would one be able to portray this?

What climate are they from currently?
    Where are they ending up?

Obvious areas would be too much protection, or not enough. Perhaps something made out of ice power source for a frozen world but ending up in the jungle where it may melt..

Conversely something open, air, and no protection from an equatorial climate, but end up in the frozen future with nothing to protect them.
My commentary is a gift to you.

I kinda want the time traveler to expect that he will end up in a tropical warm climate, but ends up in the frozen north.
My time machine has an open cockpit.
But I'm not sure if that's enough

That's a start, but you could go more.. wheels vs sled skis.. fans on the dash.. mosquito/bug netting.. jungle colored perhaps? Maybe on stilts or pontoon legs..
