    Razcore's Sketchbook

    Hello there art friends!

I've been kinda' playing around with art (digital art specifically) for a while now, about 2 years or so, but I haven't really taken any structure approach to learning and it kinda' worked an not - I completely suck at composition & making cool shapes + bit of trouble with values/light so at least I know what I need to really work on.

So... a few days ago I found this link https://warosu.org/ic/?task=search&g...text=Fzd+notes - first post contains google drive links from a student that went at fzd and has a bunch of homework dumped there. This makes for a decent curriculum to follow with examples although the execution isn't the best. FZD site is down now but what I've done is went to the school site and downloaded better looking pictures from there to use as reference and quality to try and achieve. Most of them have a info on what class they come from and what week (say design sketching - week 03, something like that). This in combination with http://charleslin.tumblr.com (go back in archive like page 20 or something to see homework from when he was student at FZD - he's constantly updating the tubmlr so the stuff gets pushed back) makes a really nice reference and path to follow in combination with other online resources for learning. By the way Charles Lin is (or was recently - don't know the current status) an instructor at FZD after graduating the same school a few years back.

With that all out of the way, let's get all the sketchy stuff start rolin'. Here's what I got so far in my "serious" digital sketchbook:

*start-edit*: so I understand the first (uploaded to the forum) pic gets selected as a thumbnail for the sketchbook so I reorganized a tiny bit

Was planing on doing more of these design sketches today but this fanart happened instead, I guess I'll include it as a sketchbook thing. I need to figure out the right settings for these brushes and how to best use them, that's why this unplanned painting happened.

Wow really like your buildings! I think your rendering of humans could be better, maybe practicing drawing faces more?

Yes I know the rendering/painting can be better, don't know if it's clear from the images, but I'm always trying different brushes/techniques, I haven't found yet something that I like, I constantly change brush settings and sometimes, well most times the paintings end up crappy cause I don't know how to use the brushes, but anyway, maybe this year is the year when I settle on some of them

Been very busy this last month and I almost forgot about this place, so much for doing sketches every day, but again I'm picking up again

Really cool! Your line weight and painterly brush strokes are really nice! especially on that fanart! I would just focus a bit more on anatomy, but it seems like you're going on the right path, keep posting!

Thanks @arteriorrhexis, actually that fan art I find very bad, I was just trying to get a hang of the brush preset which didn't work so well

Quick question guys, how do you practice shape design/composition (I feel they are very much related). I think my observational skills are pretty fine as witnessed by some of these studies, but anything from imagination is still very far away from my grasp. It's pretty obvious that my visual library is lacking, but I have a feeling there's more than just visual library and just practicing from photos/real life, or am my mistaking? I'm also sure in my case it's a matter of getting the proportions wrong too, I can see this in my studies as I have to redraw and correct quite a lot, good thing I can actually observe the mistakes. In any case, if you have any tips for these things, please do let me know, thanks!
